I love the impatience. Just speed it up. Or no, because then I can't.
Good thing my videos suck don’t want to be on here lol😂
What is the link to your mold making education platform?
The quality of his molds, and the finished slipcast mugs, are impeccable. However i agree with you that he is just too fussy, but that is not for the cameras, that's just him and how he works. It's very interesting to see but i find him hard to watch. A friend who can't watch him either summed it up perfectly. He's just too animated and over the top. And like you said, he's not teaching anybody anything wrong in his videos but he's making it look a lot harder than it needs to be. And just FYI, those keys you mentioned on the bottom piece of the mold near the straps, he uses those to pop some pliers in there to help help separate the mold pieces after he's poured a cast.
This was great to wake up to this morning 🤙
I work in a fossil preparator shop, and that plaster mother mold is thicker (and a lot sloppier) than some of the field jackets we make out on digs. layers of burlap with plaster have the benefit of reducing weight and reinforcing the brittle plaster for transport. We also make molds in our shop, but the mother molds are almost never anywhere near this dense. a few layers of Fiberglass and resin are perfectly fine for something this size. With rubber that thick, he loses the flexibility afforded to him by casting from a silicone mold in the first place, since the point of a mother mold is to provide structural support and minimize distortion in the cast. It seems like this guy is continuously working against himself throughout the entire process.
The statue was toppled by protesters in Portland in 2020 …
Great video
I'm a mechanical design engineer, only recently started with ceramics and mold making. i really love RTA fabrications, he's great! the love for design is awesome and exactly the same affinity i have as well - but i don't have the experience in it. i have a lot to learn. my experience lies in how to make something in an economically feasible way, and it BAFFLES me how so many design-orientated people lack in understanding this. Design & technical realization always go hand in hand. good designer know manufacturing. I'm happy i've found your channel, so much to learn! keep it up Micheal!
Thank you for your thoughtful comment. My opinion... So many of us in the creative design build fields are genuinely passionate about making stuff and it caries us like fast moving water. Although it is a lot of fun, i have notice (me included) that when I spent years working in a bubble that my idea of workflow was not great because i spent more time on the things i enjoyed doing rather than doing other things that would have allowed me more time to do those same things i enjoyed doing! It was a crazy eight. RTA is in a loop of content making in tandem with his creations... so i am not sure if he really has the same concerns you or i might have given our business backgrounds. Either way, I am always grateful for those taking the time to share any meaningful part of their creative journey. I hope you will too. Cheers, Michael
LOL! Practice makes perfect!
Step by step! My wife is a good sport.
love the talk about eye safety, I've dealt with industrial resins before where the modifiers (not sure which because it's been so long) measured in singular weight percent of the bulk resin are so dangerous they can cause permanent eye damage in less than a minute of direct eye exposure. it doesn't hurt to buy and learn how to operate emergency eye washers when blindfolded, simulating such a situation.
The eye stuff is major big deal. Until a person has a scare or a legit issue, it is usually an afterthought. I will do my best to harp on safety for awhile. Thanks for sharing your thoughts too! Michael
You can add a chamfer at the outside tips of a twist drill. This way it will drill smoothly and don’t grab the material at the end.
Yes... great idea. I hope others will use this advice!
KISS - Keep it simple stupid. I always sleep over a design and ask me, do I need this feature, can I make it simpler?
Yup... but simple is not always the fun way. In business, the fun way is not often a legit option, but in a youtube bubble, the pleasure of the build moments are celebrated. Both worlds are fun to look in on. I would sleep on it too... very helpful thing... the subconscious mind!
not even diy...
more of a wtf.
His name is Henrik, not Heinrich, and yes he is a perfectionist. He's also definitely one of the best mug makers in the game. And the reason why he knows his stuff is because his background, if i remember correctly, is in prop making or something like that for either Hollywood or Disney.
Henrik, good to know, thanks. Perfectionism is a choice, that is all I am saying. For me, I spent decades doing that and have moved to a different place in my life. I am happy with the shift. Sounds like an interesting background. Disney calls in many artists... did a lot of culinary work them as well. Fun times, but those projects were wrought with business complexities. Thanks for chiming in. Michael
Three days ago, before the algorithm introduced us, I had no idea I would be making molds as my next career. Yet here we are.
Next career? What say ye? How did you get pulled into this crazy mold making mix of life? What are you going to be doing with molds? Glad you are aboard this pirate ship! Michael
@@ShapeShifters-TV Ah, I was just being a smartass - You make this subject so interesting I binge watched a bunch and started daydreaming. Quitting my job and learning this stuff seems like a great way to make the best use of my midlife crisis.
you crack me up! The Flintstones reference and at 10:08 "This is alot of ....thinking". haha great comic timing!
Meet George Jetson! Those were the days, i miss all those crappy animated cartoons. Those animators were not too bogged down with too much thinking! ha.
enjoying this a lot. i know the channel and admire the guys work, your commintating ties things together better i guess.. thanks and please keep em comin,.
Glad you enjoy it!
I really LOVE Vantiki videos i have watched them over and over again, your perspective on what is necessary and what can be "off the cuff" is very much appreciated, It is hard sometimes to see past perfection and just Do, if it works this time great if not better next time approach...thankyou!
Vantiki was fun. We have a part two coming out this Friday. Every mold maker has their comfort zone and flow. Tiki has his, and I have mine and it's great that there is all sorts of room in between for all approaches. Honestly, I like to see skilled people give themselves a break every now and again. I guess i subconsciously wished that Henrik would let himself relax with the process a bit....taking a temp on plaster and all the fancy calculations.... but I don't know him and it's not my place to position that wish too loudly.
I learned just the other day about the temperature issue. My silicone didnt fully cure after a few days and I was so frustrated and started over three times before someone told me that at the lower temperature it's going to take way longer to cure. Great video from both parties. I also like the editor asking questions that might help people trying to learn.
Yes... maybe we should come up with the cardinal rules/characteristics of working with silicone?? Most people making molds are flying blind because the mold is not the end goal, it's just a hassle thing they have to do in order to get to the casting / output part of the project. Temperature makes a big difference... glad you have that intel in the headspace now. Thanks for jumping in! Michael
Commenting on another pro mold maker with your level of knowledge and background makes this so valuable. Optimizing finding efficiency while balancing time and money is key! Thank you very much!
A kind thank you. Reaction videos are a weird phenomena. But really... they are a great and fast way to teach. Keeping it positive! Cheers, Michael
He reminds me of Phil Hartman's character "The Anal Retentive Chef": th-cam.com/video/wVRrYw9mqEA/w-d-xo.html
This was another great react video. VanTiki has been one of the TH-cam channels I've really gained mold making knowledge from and your take on his process adds more learning value for sure. Keep up the awesome work!!
Thank you. The Van is a good guy to share all of this and the time it takes to make his videos. TH-cam is amazing in that way. I am glad you found something worth your time during the watch. Tiki part 2 comes out this friday. Stay tuned! Michael
I’m glad you were kind to VanTiki!😊 You mentioned an alternative plaster ratio for strength; where can I find that? Also, can you explain what ‘soaking out your mold’ means exactly? Thank you!
Information about plaster ratio for strength is something that I would like to know too
Ah... The formula probably appears in the second van tiki reaction not yet public. Basically, my ratio was 11 pounds Number1 Pottery, plus 1 lb hyrdocal to one gallon of water. You could probably add more hydrocal... like another pound and still be ok. Larger issue, i think tiki plaster molds are too narrow. Opinion... they should be wider at the largest part of the body 1.5" minimum. for faster casting, i would have bulked the molds to 2" thickness. Hope this helps! Michael.
@@ShapeShifters-TVThank you! So, basically adding hydrocal increases strength and slightly lessens absorption speed(?). Also, did soaking out the mold mean immersion in water? Would that be to remove elements from the plaster?
“My good enough was better than someone else’s best” It took a long time for me to realize this, and I still fight myself all the time to stop striving for perfection! I catch myself a lot more now when I’m falling into this trap, then at least I’m aware of it and can decide whether “good enough” is enough, or if I want to engage in seeking “perfection” to work at a more intentional level.
It's crazy how long a realization can take to arrive in one's life.. right? At least for me... I will be candid for a moment. I think the perfection pursuit can partially come from not having enough validation as a youngster and the desire to have certain approval from another to fill that heart space gap is a long life lesson to let go of. I spent years in that pursuit not even knowing why I needed the validation. Lot's of lessons were taught to me from being a craftsman and not all of them are centric around actually making something. Hope you are free of the perfection trap. Cheers, Michael
I really thought it said beer box lol
No bidy cares about bees.
You’d “bee”surprised about how many people out there care about bees
Look how edgy this guy is everyone 😮👏👏👏 back to ur sad life now
I believe this is not true. When i build my new shop, i am going to put in so many of these little brick houses along the parapet!
Extremely useful information, hard to find honest clear information on these topics especially in the mold making field.
Glad it was helpful. Mold making is an obscure thing, but the small business aspects of the video cross over into many other trades.... I think. Cheers,Michael
9:40 fire hazard alert!
Yes, i saw that. his temps are low, but personally, i would have been more thoughtful about that wood block placement.
Aside from not needing the release, petroleum based releases hold air bubbles against the form. Almost none of these DIY videos talk about the dangers of microcrystalline silica exposure to your eyes. I know a fella that's been doing precast for decades and now has to have his eyes "scraped" due to the scar tissue that develops.
I've made so much art for myself and understood the time and energy it takes. It is exactly as you described it: Design Opium. After 15 years of designing/art... it's very obvious to know what is efficient and what is art. The test: Do I sigh when thinking about the 20 steps that need to be completed and then having someone try and replicate the quality over and over, or do I smile when I know it only takes 5 braindead steps. Sidestepping long process and potential mistakes and fallout is the name of the game now. Thank you for trying to make people aware of this distinction between true efficiency and relative efficiency. You are trying to save everyone a lot of time and pain and help people make more money, truly. THANK YOU.
Some hikers will take many important things out of their backpacks to lighten the load, but if they only changed their boots, it would be more meaningful... (coming from the backpackers concept saying each pound on your foot is equal to 5lbs on your back). Looking for time savings in the wrong places in the shop is exactly the same. Some people will be interested in efficiency, others will not until they have real financial pressures on them to get a job out and not have job money come out of their household budget to compensate for their mistakes/wastes. It is a wake up moment when that happens. Sounds like you are well aware! Thank you for your support, Michael
Here are some insights: 1) this process is common practice here in Brasil among mold makers, I learned this in 2013 while in Design school, 2) Paulo here says in other videos that he is able to make upwards to 84m of plaster molds in 15 to 20 minutes, he is a beast for sure, 3) he was made aware of people from other countries reacting to his work, and he mentions being humbly happy for the recognition. I love your videos, thank you for reacting to a local brother. ❤
It was a great video to watch, thank you for the background info. Paulo is a craftsman who can make art from the most basic elements. Was that his kid in the video? What did you think of the closing comments on tradition? Michael
Great tips! I appreciate what you're doing and all the tips you shared! Keep it up.
Thank you Robert! I hope you stay with us for all the good stuff coming up! Michael
Also I'm guessing pricing will be around $300... So, Is a phone stand worth 300+ dollars ? Probably not but, you are paying for the art of the process.
For me, my phone is barely worth 300 bucks! Maybe he found the niche market for this?
I can also understand not wanting to laser engrave his marks on his products... It can look less premium than other methods. Or I would say manufacturing pre-laser was sometimes of higher quality, now laser engraving can be seen as a mark of quality cutting. Examples include the roll markings on Colt receivers or the now laser engraved marks on Ray-Ban sunglasses. ...
Yes, the laser idea has some drawbacks, but not much from my perspective if it is well done. The amount of work and compromise to include that foot is massive part of his effort. A glue on foot would have worked as well.
It seems to me to he has adopted... a Japanese philosophy as it pertains to his process. What I mean by that is, the process itself is part of the art. I do agree that it seems like a mixed message that he states efficiency as a goal. I believe it is but, it must remain within the self imposed artistic restraints that he implemented. The yin and yang... He must first wax on before he can wax off, and everyone loves watching this dude wax off
Yes, the Japanese know how to wax off for sure! Their culture cherishes personal attention to detail... i saw that in many ways with Japanese chefs i worked with over the years. Maybe i would jive with the RTA waxing idea if all of his other process were hand oriented as well. Jamming a tech process through the japanese hand philosophy is not really the same to me. You?
Exciting, just getting started with silicone mold casting. Looking forward to the tutorials! Do you have an email list/newsletter we can join to get notified when they're launched?
Oh snap, that would be a good idea. Currently, not that organized for back and forth with email notifications... but our website ShapeShiftersTV.com is the best place to see everything. I will be putting resources into keeping that a good navigational portal and updated. Takes time to do all this next to my other businesses. I will do my best! Cheers, Michael
I typically enjoy this guy's content, but this particular video fell short. You're spot on about the importance of using a table saw with the correct blade to ensure square and clean cuts. I was surprised to see him cutting and placing pieces freehand without any jigs or fixturing. In my shop that wouldn't make it out the door because i'd certainly end up with uneven weld lines and a subpar finished product. The glue everywhere ruins the finish on any show surface it touches as well.
Acrylic is not easy. I was not a master at it in any way, but staying safe was priority. I will comment on more of his videos because I know this video was not his best foot forward... but I thought if a few people ramp up the safety chatter with saws, a good deed has been born of it. Thx for watching! Michael
why 3 water marks
Just a few weeks ago I sanded a forged carbon part without a mask. When I was finished, I seriously doubted my decision making abilities. But I certainly wouldn't have thought about uploading a video of me doing it. This is becoming one of my favorite channels on TH-cam! Especially now that you've started reacting to videos of TH-camrs whom I've been subscribed to for a long time. And who've probably had a bad influence on me.
You are not alone in the room of people who have taken short cuts and unknown risks. The thing is, we can help others not walk that carbon path without awareness. Thanks for staying with us as we add more and more on the channel. I encourage you to watch some of our videos that may seem basic because we are starting to hide some little treasures into the mix. We will be posting every Friday. Suggestions for videos? Cheers, Michael
Yea 100% take every precaution with saws, especially table. I also know a kid that lost most of his fingers.
sad story for sure. Nobody need learn that lesson from a bad TH-cam video. Ouch. Nice that they have those stop blades now. Personally, I would not have a table saw without one. Thanks for commenting, Michael
When I see some one use so much silicon I always check if they have links to sell silicone. This looks like he is selling silicone like that is 1" thick wall.
True than mun, true that...
Listening to your experience with resin printing really bums me out. It sounds like it was a while ago when you were trying them out, and things really have changed since the tech first came out. Just look at what Bambu can do on the FDM side in comparison to top of the line printers just 5 years ago! If you’re willing to give it another shot, I’d look at Formlabs. They have large format printers that might open up some possibilities, but even the Form2 that I have is an amazing machine. In comparison with my experience with current MSLA printers like the ELEGOO mars, Peopoly Phenom, and others, Formlabs was 10 years ahead of them 10 years ago. I barely knew what I was doing and had way fewer failures with Formlabs than I do now with MLSA printers. The cost is the only thing keeping me from using the Form2 more often.

Ever watched any of the Power Signs acrylic videos? th-cam.com/video/zY0C5M9KPNc/w-d-xo.html
Never had before. that guy has got some casual looking moments that result in fancy signs. I wish i knew enough about his world to offer keen reaction to... but he is in another lane for sure! Michael
Yeah this video is indeed crap and dangerous! Thanks for pointing this out to the whole public!
I know he has some good videos too... and I will balance out with some of those. But this one just grabbed me to put a bull horn on it. Thanks for commenting. Michael
You should see vantiki, he is amazing too
@@berkaydede9557 Next Friday, vantiki video posts. It's a funny one.
Love the recommendation on a stone benchtop, but I am curious as to why you wouldn't use stainless steel? Surely a commercial food preparation bench would be the most cost effective?
@@aidensommerville4384 Steel is ok as long as you have a very good quality table. Most of the affordable steel tables have tops that buckle or flex easy. For me, it was easier to get custom stone tops than custom steel tops....but the metal idea is fair game. I also used to have many wood top table and would put thin masonite on top...when the tops got too scuzzy, I could swap out cheaply.
Eric has much better videos showcasing his work. He’s done a lot of clear car headlight lens reproductions where he’s making the molds and pressure casting to get an optically clear final product. I’ve worked extensively with acrylic and DCM solvent one thing to know is the solvent is carcinogenic and also a neurotoxin, it absorbs through your skin easily. So ventilation or a respirator are recommended. Nitrile or latex gloves don’t work as the DCM immediately seeps through. But if you have proper work holding you shouldn’t be getting your hands/fingers in contact with the solvent anyway. I ran a co2 laser and a CNC. I would take a CNC’d edge for solvent welding over a laser’s since the laser isn’t ever going to make completely vertical cuts. And some plastics tend to craze after being laser cut or flame polished and then solvent welded, so be aware of that.
@@dew-drop All great information. I hope many people continue to share safety information. You are right about the laser cuts not being square, but for a lot of our construction we were stacking layers to create shallow molds....so it really can depend on the end use. But your right, when we need a true side edge, we run it on the cnc. Re solvents....my eye doctor warned me about the vapors as he said many thinners and solvent fumes can potentially melt contact lenses....yikes. As I mentioned in the video, I will look at more of Eric's work and hopefully find something inspiring to share. Thank you for joining in....love the pros coming out of the background! Michael
@@ShapeShifters-TV Been loving your videos by the way! I’ve since moved on from my prior custom fabrication work and back into software development, but watching your videos makes me realize how much I miss working in a shop!
