Grande Katie Grande Mateo sono bravi grazie mille
Thank you for sharing the list of Italian music 😊 it is excellent. 😊❤
Thanks for the advice. Io posso parlarlo, ma non correntemente.
hi katie this happens to me aswell people either think im german or english when im travelling another good tip to keep on top of my italian is to go back to italy and throw myself in the deepend and go into shops even if i am rusty this helps my brain to automatically use italian because my brain knows its not in the UK :D
You are from the UK but your English accent is really...weird. You pronounce many words in different accents, like you sometimes pronounce the "r"s in words, sometimes not, some words in British accent, some others not etc. Been living in Italy for so long that you lost your native accent? Your Italian accent seems much better than the English one. Could you explain? :)
These videos are awesome for learners. Your hard work making these is appreciated.
I am American, I am probably at an A2/B1 level. On my last trip to Italy in 2022 I was at the Hotel Diana in Rome and they have a rooftop restaurant. I went up there for dinner (I was alone at this point on the trip). As soon as a waiter saw me he said ´Private party, private party.´ I responded in Italian... ´scusi è la mia prima notte qui´. He immediately looked around the restaurant and pointed to a big table right in front of us... ´qui va bene?´. i said ´sì certo´ and sat down for a couple glasses of wine and dinner. He treated me very kindly the entire night as we spoke Italian... My point is that, based on my experience, to me it is true that Italians will be very kind and accepting of someone learning Italian. Quindi.... parlate! Frank ps I love your channels and watch you a lot and have learned a lot from you, grazie!
Anyone else struggle with the gli? Sometimes it sounds like a y and other times like an L, especially when it stands alone as a definite article plural. I tend to just pronounce it like an L. But i feel this isn't right.
It's so weird to hear you speaking in English!
Mi piace perche e' piano piano e posso sapere che lei dice. 🙂 Abbiamo di bisogno di piu ! (Hope this makes sense!)
Oooo!!! If you want to do a video about "in" nel' nello, etc!!! 😊
Oh my goodness! Che brava! Grazie per la lezione! Ora, lo so! Credo che posso ricordarelo 🙂 (hope I wrote correctly!)
I would have loved to watch this, but your vocal fry is very annoying
I am an American and I am just starting to learn Italian. This is an INCREDIBLY helpful video!!! Thank you!
Mille grazie per i tuoi consigli!😊
If someone persists in speaking English, I will persist in speaking their language. When I was in Morocco most people would start by speaking French, or in the north of Morocco, Spanish. When they found out I was English they would start speaking English (if they knew any). I would persist in speaking Darija (Moroccan arabic) until they stopped speaking anything else and they lapsed back into Darija. Eventually most people will get the message. The ones who persist in speaking English are usually the ones who are delighted to find a native speaker and want to practise. In some places it’s a real novelty for them as they have only ever learnt English from films and music.
That is why I visit rural areas. When you ask “parla Inglese”.. they are like 🫣😅 “ No…” . Or they say “yes” but when you say something their eyes go like👀👀…??
I studied French and Spanish at school and university but the focus was always on grammar, writing etc. and not speaking so although I had a good level, I was always scared of making mistakes and too embarrassed to talk to people if I felt I didn't know all the words. But when I started Italian, I did one-to-one speaking classes from day 1 and somehow lost the fear of making mistakes. Because my lessons were always 100% in Italian, I just had to find a way to explain what I wanted to say even if I didn't know all the vocabulary. It really helped to make me more confident. When I go to Italy, I do a lot of 'come si dice questo', 'vorrei uno di questo', 'come si chiama', 'cerco una cosa, non so come si chiama, che si usa per...' etc. if I don't know the name of a product in a shop. I also love chatting to people there as they often don't expect me to speak Italian and are surprised. I've had lovely conversations with shopkeepers all over Italy and you get more of an authentic experience if you speak to them in their own language.
Stefano rende interessante anche la grammatica.

A trick I learned when I was learning Spanish was that if I didn't know how to conjugate a verb but I knew the infinitive form, I'd just pair that with a noun. If you say "trovare una farmacia?" people will understand, just as English speakers would, that you want "to find a pharmacy." Learning the infinitives of the most commonly used verbs is really helpful.
A simple way to do this is to learn to conjugate the "modal auxiliaries" I want, can, will, must, etc. then memorize the infinitives. Just add the infinitives after the "modal auxiliaries." vorrei trovare una farmacia, possiamo andare etc. Using these "helping verbs" makes learning to communicate much quicker. (I got this idea from a very small book I bought in Italy 50 years ago and have since lost.
Great video, thanks! re: getting your native partner to correct/ teach you and turning a conversation into a lesson … the image of my disgruntled Italian wife's eyes rolling to the back of her head as I ask her to correct me flashes through my mind 🤣 I’m no example of what works when it comes to speaking as am still struggling to make real connections and integrate in my community 2y since moving from the UK with my wife and kids. A few things however: -I find 1:1s intimidating, not so much passing small talk, but for example going for a coffee with an Italian. I almost always come away deflated. I find larger group situations where I can be quiet and actively listen and make small contributions much more enjoyable. -However, 1:1 Italki conversations with a madrelingua I find great - the act of making a payment liberates me to speak without fear of mistakes. -This is obvious but I’ve heard it a few times and don’t think I took heed of it at the time it was most needed: "a conversation is not possible until you can understand what the other person is saying". If I could go back, I’d put more focus on hacking the listening first , and less studying, reading (unless it’s with audio), doing exercises etc. Also I’ve found that my listening improves in jumps- my first occurred after 4/5 months when almost overnight my comprehension improved from practically zero and I felt I had a base from which to interact and hence speak. Having said this I feel like I’ve been stuck at an intermediate level for a long time with respect to speaking. On the back of this video, I'm going to start speaking Italian to my cat - could be a winner working from home!
I've been living outside Naples for 2 years. I agree with getting Englished. It knocks you off track, and lets you take the easy way out, but you should resist! I've blurted out "I want to learn Italian!" awkwardly after a freeze, or saying a sentence or two in English then reverting back to Italian. Being gracious helps, because you don't know how busy this person is. Sometimes they just want the transaction over. But once you get more familiar with your neighbors you can practice with them. Also knowing short transactional phrases and responses does wonders to get you by.
Chi sbaglia impera!
Italian is an ancient language, with many influences. Commercial transactions are better off to be efficient. I hve been studying Italian for one year and my main focus is to be able to read in Italian.
I always just pull a them and say "oh, wow you speak English so well, how did you learn?" but I rarely spend time in the major touristy areas. But if they are rude I will also do what they do and speak in rapid fire english
Grazie, Katie! Adesso sto studiando con Joy of Languages. Ho provato corsi, online, e un tutor. O iniziato con Joy of Languages qualche settimana fa. Posso dire onestamente che sto finalmente imparando a parlare italiano. È il programma migliore! 🎉
I am Australian and have a very close Italian friend. We are both senior women. My friend has been in Australia since being a younger woman. It does not work for me to try to copy your tips for Americans.
I went to Italy for the first time last year and the first couple of times I was very much "what if it all goes wrong?!" in my brain, but I put that aside and everything was fine. Even just asking for a table, menu, food, drinks and the bill... it all made the experience that much better. Italians are very friendly and hospitable to anyone learning the language.
Sbagliare is difficult to pronounce in all of that. great tips. Thank you!
Grazie mille Katie ..molto utile
In teoria è vero, in pratica non davvero. Quando faccio errori la persona ne fermata parlare o parla in inglese. Ha diventato frustrato con italiano.
Never be afraid of mistakes when speaking with us italians. As you probably already know, we are (almost) always eager to help someone in difficulty. You will hardly meet an italian person who will turn its face and ignore you if your italian isn't as perfect as spoken by theatre actors or tv speakers. We try and understand what you mean, what you are trying to say. If someone doesn't, he or her isn't worth a second look, in my opinion he's not a good person. But I think it happens everywhere: I was helped with my English in England and in Ireland, and with my German in Berlin. Besides, Italian is our common language but it can vary enormously from North to South and you could even meet italians who don't currently speak a decent Italian. Local dialects, expecially in the North or in the South, are nearly inintelligible. When in Sicily with my wife, some 25 years ago (we're from Rome) we took a week to guess what a nice old sicilian man used to tell us every single morning while we walked by his house: the word was "Buongiorno" (Good morning), perhaps the word most used in Italy; but he pronunced it so oddly, in his accent, that we couldn't make out what the hell he was saying and awkwardly replied with a nod of our heads and with a smile. He must have thought we were two foreigners, if not two idiots! My regards. Claudio.
It's quite funny when a german man listens to an english lady about learning italien. I like that.
Grazie per il video! I enjoyed watching this. I'm in the phase of trying to think in Italian as well as talking and it's helpful that this vedio had been recommended to me 😅😊
A me non piace farfalle
Buongiorno. Possiamo parlare in italiano.
I have been following this channel for some time and have enjoyed it a lot. However, this was absolutely my favorite video of the channel, EVER! I have been learning Italian for several years. I have always been impressed by how a native English speaker could be so adept in speaking Italian! I am pleased, as a native English speaker, learning Italian, to hear this…it is like a a deep breath for calm. Thank you, I have saved this video to watch again! ❤
This was one of the better things I have watched on learning a language lately. Just what I needed to hear. I don't think there is anyone around here who speaks Italian. I'm just learning it because I love Italian food and well... why not! lol At the very least I know what the fancy sounding Italian dishes really mean now! ;-)
An anecdote... My daughter speaks Italian far better than I do. She sounds like a native from Ferrara. Well, now she lives in LA. She went to an Italian restaurant and started speaking Italian. They responded in English. She kept speaking Italian. They kept speaking English. It turned out that they didn't REALIZE that she was speaking Italian. The just understood her and didn't realize they could understand her because she was speaking Italian. When they finally realized what was happening, everyone had a good laugh. For me, it's less spectacular. I speak Italian here in Italy and they speak English back to me. I keep going and so do they. And I don't think they're confused about it the way the restaurant in LA was.
