In Montepulciano this summer, a cafe owner was absolutely delighted that we were able to speak a few words in Italian with him (about how hot it was and how much he loved the snow).
It’s worth learning some Italian even for these moments.

You know how people joke that our phones are listening to our conversations, and then we get ads for the things we talk about. I feel like you must be listening. I just got back from Italy again, and got an email from Katie about "missing Italy". I've also been telling a lot of people that I'm able to speak some broken Italian and get my meaning across, but when they respond, I'm completely lost, and then this video shows up! Thank you! My wife and I have decided as of December of 2024, that we are going to vacation in Italy in about eight months. I visited your website and registered, I’m not sure what’s next exactly. I also intend on using Rosetta Stone as well.
I like what you said about watching or listening to something you enjoy in Italian. For me it is the Italia Squisita YT channel. I’ve watched enough of it that I’m just beginning to understand a few words without looking at the subtitles, and if I pair that with a learning course, I just might pull off learning Italian at some basic conversational level.
    Thanks

There are tons of videos about italian grammar and language learning tips online. I think you should guys should rather produce videos or podcasts where you two talk with each other about interesting topics, culture, history, art, literature etc. You guys are wonderful and have such great chemistry and I think most people would prefer to see you talk and playfully argue about different topics rather than producing another grammar video.

Hello a little bit of advice. The subtitles are too small and need to be on a black background as they are very hard to see

I like this video however the yellow subtitles on Katie's yellow shirt make it a little hard to follow along..but don't stop or I will be speaking broken Italian forever.

I can understand all of the Italian teachers on TH-cam (most of the time). But, it's the Italian tv series that give me trouble. Parlano troppo veloce sulle serie italiane.

Bear in mind the difference between original Italian TV series (which we usually call "fiction") and foreign TV series dubbed in Italian. In the former it's not unusual to find actors with, let's say, sub-optimal pronunciation :) For the latter, we are proud to have very good doppiatori (voice actors), but, since Italian is usually longer than English, they tend to act fast to keep the pace. Comunque in generale sì, alcuni italiani tendono a parlare molto velocemente anche "mangiandosi le parole"!

Good luck with that: in most places in Italy the accents are so heavy and they mumble words so badly that even I, as Italian mother tongue, have to use subtitles to understand many films. The positive is that they are very helpful....

What movies are you talking about? The only onses that comes to mind are shot in neapolitan or other dialects which are different languages in themselves so it is obvious you do need subtitles.

    • @tarvisponsdebeaumont794
      @tarvisponsdebeaumont794 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@riccardoghelli4076 No. There's no modern film in Neapolitan: they are Neapolitan that are under the impression of being speaking in Italian. If they were speaking their own language, I suspect they would be easier to decipher, because they won't mumble words, since they speak their language with none of the effort they have to use in order to speak in Italian. A classic example is the comedian Aldo Baglio (he was born in Sicily but in real life speaks totally like someone from Milan) that when plays his Sicilian immigrant character speaks Italian with a strong Sicilian accent and mumbles a lot, but when his character speaks proper Sicilian he does not. Baglio is a great actor and understands well these linguistic problems that Italians do have. This video is also a perfect illustration of what I'm talking about: the guy is striving to have a neutral and standard pronunciation, as he's teaching Italian, but can't avoid having incorrect pronunciation, i.e. using double consonants in words without double consonants. That's going to confuse the learner and God would have to help the learner when this teacher speaks in Italian the way he speaks it with his Italian friends, outside a teaching situation.

@@tarvisponsdebeaumont794 i get your point but still it seems weird to me that you need subtitles for films shot in italian if you are a mother tongue, for sure every now and then some actor may be mumbling a word or two and speaking with an accent but it's the nature of real conversations, everybody has an accent, even english speakers have accents and can even struggle in understanding eachother if two of them come from different regions

@@riccardoghelli4076 OK, I'll mention a couple of actors that I have serious difficulty in understanding 100%, and they speak Italian, not their dialect (one of them is probably perceived as speaking proper Italian just because it's from Tuscany, but that's another story): Benigni e Troisi. Together they're really difficult to follow. I would understand them better if they were talking in French.

"Parlate" e "Andate" sono l'imperativo alla seconda persona plurale. È identico all'indicativo presente. A volte si trova scritto con il punto esclamativo. Consideriamo due frasi: "voi andate a casa" e "andate a casa!". La seconda frase esprime un comando (verbo all'imperativo), la prima frase no (verbo all'indicativo)

When I started learning Italian, 20 years ago. I played the same tape in the car (San Remo greatest hits 2004). At first I couldn't even work out the individual words. Slowly I was able to hear the words, and sometimes sing along. Eventually, I began to understand what was being sung.
