Hollywood Mysteries #60 - Jack Nance, The Unsettling Unsolved Murder of 'Eraserhead'
Advance warning - this is one of the most heartbreaking stories I've done a video on, and there have been a few. Unless you're a David Lynch fan, the name Jack Nance might not be familiar to you. His career was a near-miss all the way until he met America's most famous surrealist. However, his life was a painful horror that outmatched any Lynch character, and it all began with one of the most heartwrenching telephone calls of all time...

This is the highest quality video on Ed Wood that I've seen on You Tube, thanks for sharing. Anyone further interested in Wood's life, and frequently surreal (and occasionally unintentionally hilarious) body of work should definitely seek out No Wave/Free Jazz guitarist (and fellow cross-dresser) Rudolph Grey's excellent oral history, "Nightmare Of Extacy." which is full of testimonials from many of Wood's friends and associates, and unlike Tim Burton's often great biopic, it also covers the latter half of his life, during which he slaved away in obscurity, churning out cheap porno paperbacks for what little money he could manage to earn, between his typewriter cycling in and out of the local pawn shop, until he finally lost it forever, unfortunately. It describes his incredibly sad decline, as a result of his crippling alcoholism, and relentless poverty. One friend even describes how Wood eventually became so inebriated and unhygienic that he even had ticks (Ticks!) burrowing into his flesh, although he was so hopelessly dependent upon booze by that point that that he either no longer cared, or was unaware, of the grim condition he was in, due to the numbing effects of the cheap rotgut liquor he had sadly become entirely dependent upon, by then.

Ed Wood was & is a hero to many filmmakers. But, if you’re looking for an excellent examination of his life & career, you can’t do better than Tim Burton’s Ed Wood. Possibly, his last truly great film. However, I really enjoyed this piece on Jack Nance. A truly great talent and a truly sad end.

How on Earth can “The Elephant Man” be classed in any way as “Hollywood” ??? Apart from Lynch himself the entire production was a (absolutely genius + brilliant) British one.

While parents these days may not ever consider such photos, the era did not make nudes of children a taboo or something to be overly concerned about... there were what would be today considered a concerning amount of parents willing to have their child do nudes. To some extent, they considered it as innocent as paintings, although they new it to be good buisness... unfortunately, there are indeed some modern parents more than willing to exploit their children for sexualized consumption...

By inexplicably giving her year of birth incorrectly the computer has some losing battles with basic arithmetic. I'm guessing there is some kind of agenda at work there; oh, how I wish grown-ups would act grown-up. I was 9 years old when the Mary Tyler Moore show started its run, and coming from a household in which there was one TV, and you basically watched what your parents watched, I caught up with the show in reruns when I was in my 20s, never adhering to the myopic mindset that it was a 'woman's show'.

This is such a tragic story. I had never heard of Lucille Ricksen before, and it's heartbreaking to see how the studio system chewed her up and spit her out. It really highlights the dark side of Hollywood's golden age and the lack of protection for young performers. Thanks for bringing her story to light. It's important to remember these stories so they don't repeat themselves.

David Lynch had a knack for casting actors who had "the Persona" similar to the characters they portrayed...Kyle Mcclanahan...had that "a little kooky" nice guy persona...because he was a funny nice guy in real life....Denis Hooper said it was easy to play "Frank Booth" because He WAS Frank Booth in a lot of ways...Laura Dern was the curious girl from next Door who could be a "steamer."...But Jack Nance didn't have to go far at all to play EraserHead - He was a troubled soul..quick to drink and temper... unsure like a little lost child.

Ironically, The Night Porter featured Dirk Bogarde as an ex KL doctor ( his similarity in appearance to another notorious KL doctor, Josef Mengele , especially when in the uniform was surely a coincidence). Bogarde saw the reality of Na*i cruelty when entering Bergen - Belsen. He was , as you stated, fascinated with the abyss of human behaviour. He is an intelligent and absorbing author . There is an interview set in the garden of his French country home, this covers his war experiences and is a well paced, intelligent to and fro between subject and questioner, its probably a BBC Arena or South Bank production. Many thanks again for your work!

As it turned out, the movie industry learned nothing from the example of Lucille Ricksen as the same pattern was repeated a decade later with Judy Garland, who also had a mother who drove her to overworking and a studio that fed her pills to make her sleep and then keep her awake to work long, grueling hours. Greed for money.
