JG Design and Fabrication: Gentlemans Mercury Custom Build
While filming at Ventura Nationals, I met JG, head of JG Design and Fabrication out of Ventura, California. After drooling over this chopped and dropped sled he built, he asked me to shoot it and thus I present, the Gentleman's Merc.

I came back and edited because all I had to do was ask the Chromebook what is a 128 on a Harley, however your video is invaluable for a good comparison because I like nostalgia touch also... 4:32 I'm not sure what you meant by 128 when talking about the 114 Cube in.... I'm on the curb to buy a 2021 lowrider S114 with low miles 7000 for $11,000. Sure I would scoop it up but right now trying to listen to everything I can before giving away my 103 cubic inch for such little money to the dealership and trade.
excellent footage! We're doing a video on the best motorcycle roads. Would you be interested in letting us use a few seconds of this footage with a credit link?
@@GreatMotorcycleRoads Thank you! Absolutely!
Nate Beck is wrong. The best bike they made is the Livewire.
You think a 1993 Harley sportster 883 is worth getting which has great compression test results For 4k
Does it run? What is its overall condition? Check for rust inside the tank, when was the carb last cleaned, etc. 4K isn't a bad price. Evo Sportsters are one of the most, if not the most, reliable bike HD ever built.
@@NateBeck it’s also been worked on has sissy bar, not stock handle bars and said they drove it last season or this season and did start up pretty good from Cold. This will be my first bike and I’m just a little nervous and want to Make a good decision you know
@@jagpreetsangha7393 Hard to know when buying a used bike but if it starts up well from cold, tires are in good condition, overall it looks like its been cared for then an evo sportster is always a good buy. When something goes wrong with it (and something will, it happens with every bike) a TON of people know how to work on sportsters and parts are easy to get and usually not too expensive. I'd see if the seller will come down on price to like 3250 or 3500 just in case something comes up then you have that extra cash to fix it.
@@NateBeck thank you so much for help and time, also I’m in Canada so the cost from $4000 CAD is probably equivalent to $3000 USD
You think a 1993 Harley sportster 883 is worth getting which has great compression test results For 4k
Back in "20", while on my semi-annual trip to a dealer for Tour Pak Hinges {Electra Glide} I took a short walk thru the showroom, chuckling at the new stuff designed to hook the new younger crowd. Surprise ! A Salesman pops out. We chat for a while. After a bit he walks me outside and says "Sit on This". A "20" Heritage Classic. MISTAKE ! Those hinges wound up costing over 20K! Love the Bike! Wish I would've got it sooner, since I don't spend the time I have in the past, just hit 10K miles a few weeks ago. My only main gripe about the bike, not sure if it's model specific, the Instrument Cluster. Bottom 1 1/2" or so,fogs up ?! Covering up the Tach, and any info you can scroll thru. Took it to a couple Dealers, with the same result. Suck on it! Yes it will happen from time to time, that's the way they were designed, and there's nothing that can be done about it. Yes, it clears up in a couple hours, but is still a pain! Well, Ok, not too thrilled with the battery placement either. I'm not a Mechanic!!!!!! 1st bike I've ever owned, take to a Dealer to have the battery replaced! Didn't understand that either. Needed a new one on year 3 ?! But like I said, Love It ! Perfect Bike for an Ol' Fart !
@@jadamec congrats on your fresh ride!
I have both a 2021 and a 2022.. I have the same zippers cam in both with slip on cobra pipes. Both bikes rip, both have about the same HP after a dyno tune.. the 117 has a bit more TQ, however, the 114 has a little more TQ before 3k. The 117 seems to come on at 3k and up. Both get up to 90hp very quickly... fast enough to get my license taken away and go to jail.
I like to say mine goes from zero to „why hello officer“ way to fast
dont die
5:14 according to you which is the bike bike?
Great video and beautiful California scenery. I had a 2020 Heritage for about 3 years and loved it. Agree with all your comments on the Heritage and I too think it’s Harley’s best overall motorcycle. I sold mine earlier this year and bought a lighter BMW F750 GS. Just needed a lighter bike now that I’m getting older. Just turned 68 and still riding. Got my start riding motorcycles when I was at Vandenberg AFB on the beautiful central California coast back in the early 80’s. Great place to ride. Keep up the good work.
@@GARamblinMan thank you! And thank you for your service!
@@NateBeck I was actually a civilian with the US Army Corps of Engineers back then when we were building Space Shuttle facilities for the Air Force , but when the Challenger exploded the Air Force scrapped the whole program and stuck with their unmanned rockets to launch their satellites out of Vandenberg. It was still a great experience and I loved living on the central coast.
@@GARamblinMan Its a gorgeous hidden gem. So many great rides!
117 is better obviously but for the price 114 might be better
Off the showroom floor yes but now you can get a 114 for so much less, use that extra money on an S&S Big Bore Kit and ride off on a 136 which is so much power haha
@NateBeck thats what I was thinking. I wrecked my sport bike so am trying to ride a bit more relaxed now. Plenty of better priced 114s available in my area
That rear suspension has 1.5 inches of travel and since most of these bikes have bags, there is no advantage to it over dual shocks whatsoever. But you do get to say “softail” so there’s that.
Why there is no wind on your chest or sleeves ...nothing is moving, is it because of the massive headlight?
Heritage is probably the best all around bike but it's not the best looking. The best all around bike that has everything and the best styling as well is the Sport Glide (ok, you need to get a taller windscreen for $150 to make fairing have wind protection but thats it) but Harley removed it from American market cuz they won't sell any Heritage with Sport Glide in lineup. That pisses me off, let us choose for ourselves! Europe and Middle East still have Sport Glide in market and it's the hottest seller for Harley. Why are they limiting Americans choices especially when Sport Glide is probably the perfect American bike for American roads!? I want the Sport Glide but every year they don't make it available in America since 2021 and I want a new one!
Have you checked out the Lowrider ST? Similar kinda vibe but bigger engine.
@@NateBeck Yeah to be honest I like all the bikes but I don't want an all blacked out bike this time. I'm sick of the look. I like a mix of chrome and black so that limits my options. Another reason I love Sport Glide is because of the nice chrome offset on black.
@@Nucklehead-mm9gf totally agree. The color options these past few years leave something to be desired.
It is up in the air over a Triumph Speed Twin 1200 or this bad boy.
It would be interesting to see a which is faster off the line. The Harley has much more torque (125 ftlb) but comes in way heavier at 679 lbs whereas the Triumph torque comes in at 77 but is only around 480 pounds.
@@NateBeck it would be a very interesting race for sure. I'd love to see a off the Line race and rolling race. I am very impressed with what Harley Davidson has achieved with the bike. I miss my 92 Dyna and this bike fills that void for me. Thank you for the great content mate. Subbed and safe riding 🤙
Location?
Remains of the old Tumble Inn on the Old Ridge Route, just east of Interstate 5 freeway in California, northeast of Pyramid lake.
I’m sure ya missus is telling the truth when she says size doesn’t matter, either. 😂
I like how we can just drive between cars... Pretty sure where I come from it's not even legal... Positive it's not safe
Splitting is legal in the state of CA while filtering is legal in AZ, HI, MT, and UT. 7 other states are discussing making it legal as well. Heres an interesting article to read on its safety if you're interested in learning more. ridermagazine.com/2023/06/16/split-decision-are-lane-splitting-and-lane-filtering-safe/
I want a 2004 heartage but people talk about the sting acid dripping. But they are the best looking in my choice
What was your favorite bike you rode that year?
Hmmmm thats a tough decision. The Heritage is always a top contender. Its the perfect blend of nimble enough for canyons but solid enough for long interstate runs. That being said they don't change much between model years. The new Low Rider S however with the 117, 28 degree (instead of stock 30 degree) rake really opens the maneuverability of that bike up as well as the rear suspension being raised from the factory really makes it able to rip it hard when its stock.
Ah, California, explains why no exhaust
Love my heritage... also don't like riding with a passenger. Bike gets sluggish, feels like your steering an old Buick around turns. Would much rather ride solo. Just my opinion.
I absolutely LOVE my Heritage. I got a few aggravating things to fix on mine but I'll ALWAYS keep this bike!
soft tails suck, real men ride road glides.
Is that a great big scratch on the 117 air cleaner????
Sadly yeah. Whoever tested the bike prior clipped it somehow
i agree. This is the best bike Harley makes.
Cheers! Thanks for watching
I'm 70 still riding my late wife weighed like a 100 pounds and was an excellent passage. Even on my 72 FLH with the old school buddy seat you couldn't tell she was there. Buying another FLHSTC next week.
They’re great bikes to ride two up on
You will love it, it's a great all around choice.
How’s the new ride going?
Sold my 02 FLHSTC and my 2000 Roadking in 2020 when my late wife had a lot of medical bills. I kept the 72 FLH the 98 Fatboy and my 46 Chief. I'm buying a 2009 FLHSTC with 29K on it next week. (11-30-23) I missed mine.
Nice! I used to have a 76 FLH.
Fine video. Thanks.
Thank you.
Beautiful machine, I have a 2011. I liked the jumpsuit, do you have a link to recommend this jumpsuit?
Hello Carlos, Yep here you go. They're Carhartt insulated bibs seen here www.carhartt.com/product/104031/loose-fit-washed-duck-insulated-bib-overall---3-warmest-rating?categoryCode=default&colorCode=DKB_SW and then just a Carhartt jacket
I am a rider of 50+ years and I hate it when I see someone cut through traffic. It gives everyone riding a bad name and causes road rage against someone who maybe hasn't done anything wrong.
In California it’s actually legal and encouraged to do so. Helps with traffic flow and studies show when done with care and caution its safer than being a sitting duck in traffic. There are some great articles on how the benefits outweigh the risk.
My problem with lane-splitting are cars. Up here in New England, they change lanes at the drop of a hat with no signals, and close the slot randomly. I've seen cars kiss, and watched a few bike nearly get splinched. Proceed with caution. It's not legal up here, so you usually only see it happen with street bikes that are upset that they're going under 100. Be safe. Ride.
Excellent video bro.
Thanks man!
I enjoy short 200 mile rides that wear me out. I love to feel it. It's glorious. Mine is the 2013 Bonneville 865. I took my windscreen off and got a full face helmet and I love riding it through the windy mountain roads of the Bankhead National Forest. Although if I wanted to ride five hours to the gulf coast I'd be a little wary.
The Bonneville handles so well on mountain roads. That’s so awesome you have a national forest nearby to ride!
torque means nothing if they don't tell you how many revs you get it at, 125foot pounds of torque at 2k rpm is significantly less horsepower than at 3.5k rpm
What a great video! Well produced, great dialoge, and the roads are amazing. great job. I am currently trying chose between a low rider s and the street bob. Was a big fan of the dynas and I have always loved the two. The way you describe the diffences between riding feel really helps. I think it'll come down to test rides to determine. I had a road king 88TC, and feltmit was pretty underpowered. Now I'm hooked on the lightest fastest torque monster I can get. But I want to be able to cruise through back roads
... as well. I'll definately spend some time on your channel though. keep it up👍🤘
@@stevengunn1729 Thanks for the kind words! I feel you cant go wrong with either model however comparing the two, if you're coming from a Dyna background I feel you'll enjoy the Low Rider S more. The Street Bob is killer in its own right but the powerplant on the Low Rider S is superior plus the rake is at 28 degrees vs 30 degrees. While 2 degrees doesnt seem like much it is absolutely noticeable and the bike handles more aggressively. I have ridden hundreds of miles on the Low Rider S and never felt uncomfortable or it wasn't up for a long haul cruise.
Hi. My name is Fabio Pelegrini. I’m from Brazil and I live in São Paulo. I don’t know how to ride a motorcycle, but I’m thinking of buying a HD. I’m in doubt between the Low Rider S and Nightster models. What do you think is the best bike? Thanks!
Hello Fabio! That’s exciting you want to get into riding motorcycles! I would absolutely start with a Nightster. The Low Rider S is a very powerful motorcycle that is made for an advanced rider. The Nightster still has plenty of power and will be very fun but also more forgiving for someone who has never ridden before.
@@NateBeck thanks!!!!
I have a 107 Low Rider because I could not afford more. However, bags, mini apes and some floor boards... Enjoy the short no nonsense videos.
Thanks man. Love a Low Rider, adding bags, mini apes and floor boards and I bet its a mile muncher!
This video going to get 23 grand out of me I love it
Hahaha the bike absolutely rips.
Another great video. Nate please get back to sharing your rides. They inspire more than you know.
Hello Jack! Thank you so much for your kind words. I am getting back to it soon, spent today planning actually! Had to tend to some family health matters over the past few months but excited to get back to sharing the road with everyone!
Nice Mountain View’s, also I love Zach Bryan!
Absolutely on paper, the Bolt is a better bike! Also, a lot of Harley guys know this, but will still choose the Iron/Sportster, and I agree with the fact that the Sportster is better looking has that classic Harley sound, and “Heritage” which the same can’t be said for the Bolt. That being said, I’d still pick the Bolt, why? Because the Bolt is a superior choice for smaller mid size “air cooled” bike class, and still makes more sense than the Harley. Speaking of classes, if we were to go to the full sized air cooled class, Yamaha loses out there, and Harley is a better choice, which is why I will be buying an Indian😂
I’ve only ridden an Indian on a quick test ride but it was niiiiiiceeeee.
What slip-ons are those? Love the sound!
Hey Aaron! They are Python’s. No other modifications other than that. Stock tune and intake.
No, I’m sorry.
The Heritage is a nice bike, but it's NOT the best all around bike, that Harley makes. That title belongs to The Road King.
Hey DHarleyFan1! Welcome! The Road King is an amazing bike and it’s neck and neck with the Heritage. I did a couple long trips on the monoshock RK and the best way I felt about them was the RK was a bagger with a bit more agility and the Heritage was a cruiser/new version of the Dyna with a bit more comfort. I found the agility with a bit more comfort was easier overall to ride daily when mixing up short trips, fun tips and long hauls vs the RK. Long trip absolutely RK but an every day bike that’ll do short errands, hard canyons plus ability to go multi state long distance perfectly for me is the Heritage. Wish ya many fun miles!
As my 97-year-old grandpa says ' road king is for girls, heritage is for men'.
I'm 6'5, bike is awesome but I'll definitely need forward controls for longer rides
I’m 6’2 and definitely would put on forwards if I was tripping it.
Killer boots.
Thanks dude!
There are some great deals on used LiveWires if you look for them. I got mine in Dec 2022 at 50% MSRP and with just 2100 miles on it. Something I wish more people would consider when thinking about the cost is the total cost of ownership. Electricity is dirt cheap, the bike gets crazy mpg like 295 mpg (0.8L/100kms). It's basically maintenance free as well. Even your brakes will last way longer, thanks to the regen. Considering the range, think about how often and how far you ride, if everyday you left the house you had a full tank of gas how often would you need to go to a gas station? Absolutely these are not for everyone and I wouldn't ever try to convince anyone they were but there are a lot of things to consider. For me I will keep my Mean Streak bagger for taking the GF for rides and likely for longer trips but the LiveWire is getting all the love right now for my evening and weekend rides in the twisties.
Great perspective! I bet it’s super fun in the twisties!!
@@NateBeck sure is :) reminds me of my old Honda Blackbird.
I mean a quicker more cumffy bike would
Nah, but maybe a vintage bike would
A ftr 1200 would smoke that and is more cumffy lol
@@bigsandytaco Lol obviously, there’s no question nor is anyone saying it wouldn’t.
The 117 is literally better in every way 🤣. Stop saying this crap to be edgy lmao
What’s changed on the 117 other than motor size and suspension? Both of which you can upgrade on a 114 to beat the 117 for less money than a new 117
İts my dream
