    I really appreciate you mentioning (and linking) places to purchase monocles. A lot of people talk about vintage style, but they don’t always mention where we can actually find them.

    WOW! 50 years ago I purchased a monocle as part of my "Major General" outfit for a production of "The Pirates Of Penzance" Although I was wearing reading glasses at the time the monocle did the trick without any of the hassle!! I'm 72 today and still have one hanging around my neck! Now...people think it's strange NOT to see me with one!! Loved the video...Thank You!

      Hello, Sir!
      Thank you very much for your comment and thank you for sharing the story. I've always been a huge fan of the Major General and have tried to sing his song as fast as I possibly could for years! Ha-ha!
      I am also questioned if people perceive my monocle to be missing, it does become a trademark because people don't see them often, though they're not as uncommon as some people think.
      When I lived in Winchester I noted several people with monocles.

      They're so wonderfully practical and will certainly solve the asymmetry that you're facing with one lens (the same problem I'd have had too!), but be prepared for some silly comments, looks and most of all lots of interest in the amazing eyepiece!

    I’m looking into obtaining a monocle. I recently had my left eye removed after being blind in it for several years. Earlier this year I had a cataract removed so I no longer need glasses, except to read. It seems a waste buying a pair of reading glasses for one eye, so I’m researching monocles. I thoroughly enjoyed your video. I am surprised you haven’t started using a cane to complete the look. I have nerve damage in both legs and have to use a cane, although I tend toward the bent wooden style canes rather than the fancy topped canes.

    I remember wanting monocles when I first needed glasses, and my parents bought me a pair of them. The problem was, as much as I wanted them, I'm very short-sighted. My eyesight is so bad that I really can't get by with only one lens. I think on a practical level monocles are better for minor correction, or if you're long sighted and need it for reading. I'm noticing my eyesight when reading is getting worse too so I may get a monocle again as an adult for that purpose. I also have astigmatism in one eye

    (Col) Alfred Wintle in his autobiography, entitled The Last Englishman, states very firmly that the only proper monocle is the rimless type without a lanyard. It doesn't need a lanyard because it doesn't fall out if the wearer knows his business. If memory serves ( it's years since I read the book) he goes on to record how he proved his point by riding in a steeplechase (or perhaps a point to point) with his monocle immovably in position.

    I have astigmatism in my left eye that causes me to be somewhat nearsighted in that eye. The eye doctor said I could have a corrective lens made for it. However, my other eye is strong enough my brain can compensate, so it doesn't affect my vision, and therefore I don't need corrective lenses at this time. I was offered the glasses with one corrective lens, but a monocle might be the perfect solution, given it would go well with my detachable collars and tastes in menswear. Will keep this in mind for when I inevitably will need a corrective lens, thanks for the info

    I love the retractable chains. They are very handy.
    I've been wearing pince-Nez since I was 15 and I'm now 27. I can highly recommend them as they are extremely comfortable and don't fall off easily. You do need to find the correct size bridge for your nose and there is around 30 sizes but its well worth it.

    i'm impressed at how easy you make it look to put on a monocle. I'm wondering if its because of my facial bone structure that I have such a hard time putting them on.

    • @AntiqueMenswear
      @AntiqueMenswear  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's probably partly practice (I've been using them since age 10, I think), and also size!
      If the monocle is too big or too heavy (if it has a fat chain) then it won't stay put well.
      A swinging chain has too much momentum, even moving your head whilst wearing a chain will cause enough of a whip to pull the monocle out.

  • @Reziac
    @Reziac 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Huh. I might have to get one -- very practical. You can always change out the modern lanyard for something natty. (Or even a bit of woven fishing line for good strength but very fine texture.)
    So tell us about the functionality of the armbands on the shirt?
    And "the End" works!
