MOUNTAIN WAREHOUSE WATERPROOF BOOTS
I have tried a number of supposedly waterproof boots that were disappointing. I found these and was pleased with their performance so I decided to share my findings to help anyone who, like myself, wanted a pair of properly waterproof boots. I test my boots by walking the length of the Galtee mountain range. A walk known as the Galtee challenge or the Galtee crossing.

    The poncho was a good idea which did not work. Soldiers thought it was a groundsheet with a hole in the middle (which was the worst place where you could have a hole). It was therefore regarded as an inferior waterproof sheet which did not really do a good job. The bivvi bag was a very welcome alternative.

    It looks like a saw was used on the ends, negating the need for a knife blade. Win win for the Swiss army knife with saw. Kudos for a vid where you actually use the tool. A 110 on a table with waving hands is all the rest.

    In the future I would suggest a decent diamond stone for sharpening "super steels" , they're much more difficult to sharpen and hone quickly on a Norton stone. Then ceramic to hone and leather strop to finish. Its just harder steel than 420HC. I've been an owner and user of Buck knives since 1980😂 I don't baton, beat on or abuse them. Honestly its a HUNTING folding knife, not a chopper or beater. Hope this helps, as I much prefer the old clip point models myself. Im old😂😂

  • @strat1080
    @strat1080 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I just ordered a custom Buck 113 Skinner and thought long and hard about upgrading to the S30V steel instead of 420HC. I decided to stick with 420HC. I was worried that S30V would be difficult to sharpen with the tools I have and particularly in the field. I’ve come to really appreciate Buck’s 420HC. It strikes s good balance between edge retention and ease of sharpening.

  • @strat1080
    @strat1080 หลายเดือนก่อน

    S30V is harder but not tougher than 420HC. Generally, the harder a steel is the less tough it is. S30V will hold a sharp edge longer than 420HC but will be more prone to chipping when encountering harder surfaces.

    The Rough Ryder trapper....is a 10$ knife. The CASE trapper, that one is 60-70$. 1 major difference is the blade steel. 440a in the RR and CASE's TRUE SHARP which is most likely a type of 440C.

    • @vinniesdayoff3968
      @vinniesdayoff3968 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The conclusion I have come to is that I'm not impressed with RR at all. I'm not impressed with Case either. I think their Carbon steel is excellent but I doubt true sharp is 440c. It's a pretty ordinary stainless. Let me add an ordinary stainless is perfectly good enough for the vast majority of knife users for all they are doing with their knives. More worrying is their quality control. I only have two Case knives one of which I had to return. The replacement has a really weak back spring . Charging a high price should mean that everything is top quality and shoddy product should not slip through

      @@Orlosthedruid I started out looking for "magic" steel. I have come to the realisation that how the knife is built is as important if not more important than the steel, I like a thin blade and a knife that has been made by a company with good quality control. I had no interest in Swiss Army Knives but now believe they are excellent. I like the Buck 110 but recently got a Buck 112 and I think it is even more suitable for me. Your 91mm-Victorinox is a Spartan, the Camper would come with a saw, as well as the Hiker. I usually carry a Huntsman as an EDC, the scissors are my most used tool - and for outdoors I have an Outrider. I prefer the corkscrew over the Philips, very useful to untie knots and store Helix tinders - with a 'Firefly' ferrorod from Tortoise Gear as a replacement for the toothpick you get an almost complete survival kit. My only wish is, Victorinox would bring a knife with better steel like S30V or Magnacut. The best survival knife is the one you carry with you when the situation occurs, and chances are much better for a folding knife, especially in Europe, where I live. I highly recommend watching YT-videos of Felix Immler, the 'Victorinox-guy', to see, what you can do with just a SAK.

    I am a neophyte to knives; however I recently purchased a Bos heat treated Buck with a thick blade simply because I had seen S35vn on the blade It was a display knife so the flipper spring was not as snappy as I had seen videos of on You Tube as it most likely had been opened many times, being a display knife, however despite the sluggish flipping action, the weight of the blade after I had flipped it open, caused it to flip right out of my grip onto the concrete floor. Which is my point here. The Bos heat treated still did show a tiny little chip near the very tip of the blade where it landed and thus probably the benefit of having thick steel was exhibited as a lesser steel, after falling out of hand and onto a concrete floor may have suffered more damage than just a molecular sized chip that will easily be grinded out and sharpened to like new. However, it is a small benefit and I wish I had been more patient and purchased a blade with a slimmer blade as I was aware of the cutting advantage of thinner blades made from blades that can hold an edge, before I made my purchase. Not to mention that I lost my receipt. so now I am stuck with the knife. But I surmise that there are worse things than having a knife with a Bos heat treated S35VN blade in the back of your knife drawer or glove compartment.

    I worked on the waterfront for a couple of decades. Victorinox knives will eventually rust and pit, primarily from lack of use I suspect. I've seen a lot of corroded SAKs that had been thrown into a drawer on a boat and hadn't been used at all. Just occasional use and wiping the blades clean with fingers keep those little fellers in great shape.

    When I was in the cubs and at primary school every little boy had a pocket knife. It was a matter of pride to own one and to know how to use it. No one was ever stabbed and no one ever used one in a fight. We built dens, made fires and other things with our knives. Knife culture as a weapon I feel is a foreign importation and a far cry from the way we were brought up 60 years ago!
