  • I built this thatched shelter with a Swiss Army Knife (SAK) My opinion is that too many BS shelters are being built on TH-cam. Have a look at how this shelter performs. I think it would be a good thing if other TH-camrs did this with their shelters. Why not ask them to do it?

Good to see real world results! The often forgotten and underestimated thatching. I’d like to give it a go here soon. Take care!

Thanks. I found rosebay willowherb makes an excellent thatch. I had the base or stem of the plants facing uphill if that makes sense. You should have some of that in your area. It is fast to collect and it covers a large area as the stems are long. We had a bit of a drought (unbelievably) this year and the rosebay is a bit stunted looking. I used it in the Ganzo 725-m video.

On second thoughts, The rosebay willowherb is good thatch but I did not use it long term. It does shrivel up greatly when it dies back so I might make another one and see if it holds up over time.

The thatch is fantastic, it seems to hold up really well. It's something I have never tried doing.
I would love to see a video with some detail of how you do the thatch and secure it, I have watched professional thatchers on a couple of jobs in the UK but I'm sure this is not quite the same. Thanks for showing us that in awful weather when you could have been sitting at home in the dry with a cup of tea.

I had fully intended to show that this time Chris, but time was passing and I needed to get it done. I simply loop a bramble around a bunch of rushes (after tying it off) securing them to a horizontal pole and continue on with a kind of whip stitch with each consecutive bunch. (I think that is what the stitch is called) There is another pole lower down just for the rushes to lay against for support. I start at the bottom and make sure the next row up covers the stitching generously. I feather the bunches out at the bottom to get maximum coverage. I put the thick end facing down as it is wider on the bottom. The very last row I inverted having the thick end uppermost. I am but a ham fisted thatcher and I would love to talk to a proper thatcher and get some advice someday. However it works fairly well. Thank you for watching my friend.

Thanks Vinnie. That sounds more or less the way I thought it would work, if I can find the right material here I will give it a try. Some we have in Spain, as I'm sure you know, is palm trees, mostly date palms. At the trunk end are very nasty spikes but if you cut them shorter to were the fronds start then split them down the middle, they make the easiest thatch there is.The company I work for buys thatch, grown in Africa, put together in England and shipped to Ibiza! It's a bit like burning money.

They definitely burn some diesel to get it there Chris!

I'm all caught up with your videos now, Vinnie, can't wait for the next one. To stand there in the rain shows your dedication. I have to say your Christmas video was just beautiful.

Nice one Vinnie. I like how you build the shelter and then take the time and effort to see how they perform, it gives a better understanding of which ones work best and what materials to use. I'm needing to go back to my shelter and dismantle it, had it for a few years. When I do, I'll make a video showing my mistakes as it was and is the only shelter I have made so far. Nothing like the standards of yours though. Thanks for sharing. Atb Shaun

Hi, just found your channel from a post on RockEastwood Outdoors channel and thought I would check you out what your channel is all. Thank you for bringing me back to my days of growing up in eastern Quebec where 4 ours out of the house meant a shelter had to be built lol. We had so much fun doing it and skill I have tried to pass down to my kids (even though I am now allergic to spruce...) Really like what you are doing and want to check out more of your content so I have pushed the button and rang the bell and hope that you could come by and check out what we do and if you like what you see, show our channel some love as well. We are a husband and wife team based out of Montreal and specialize in cinematic shorts featuring urban and rural scenes but also trains, trucks, etc. We also do live streams with tips on editing, creating, filming, photography, and managing and growing on TH-cam with guest TH-camr’s just like you and me. .Hope you can drop by soon and we will definitely check out more of what you do. Cheers and all the best

Thank you Peter, I think important things are often glossed over with TH-cam videos and an impression given that is a little "misleading" which could get someone in trouble if they copied what they saw.

Ta John, the skills would be better if I could stay dry. I am interested in the concept of a natural shelter but they are not quick and unless you want to build a miniature house you have to compromise. I would like to come up with something quick that is waterproof and gives good coverage despite the wind. The search continues. Thanks very much for dropping by. I appreciate it.
