@@vinniesdayoff3968 Vinnie, I've had a good Christmas. I spent time with the family and took time to make my way to the woods today. I received a new Uncle Henry trapper knife for Christmas and was itching to try it out. It seems to be good quality even though its made in China. I have a question, if you had your choice for a woodsman's knife would you avoid a serrated blade. I thought about it and for myself I would have to say I prefer a straight blade. Let me know what you think about serrated blades. Thanks!!! Merry Christmas.
I find serrations no better than a sharp straight blade for things like rope etc Tim. I really dislike serrations when they are just in front of the handle where you have most of your cutting power. I never used them much at all and to be honest I don't know how I would go about sharpening them. I prefer straight blades. I had a look at the Uncle Henry trappers online and they look nice. I'm glad you enjoyed Christmas. I had to work Christmas eve and Christmas day (it was miserable) but we are having our "Christmas" today 😀 Cheers Bud! 👍
@@vinniesdayoff3968 Thanks Vinnie for your opinion on serrated blades. I agree with you, they are a bit hard to sharpen. I've noticed that most outdoors men do not use them and I can see why. I have been looking at different grinds on knife blades. The one that caught my eye was a full tang Scandinavian grind that tapers from higher up on the blade to the final cutting edge. I like this design and believe this to be a good design. I remember what you said about all of the survival knives on the market. The bulk of them don't have a full tang and normally fail at the handle that's usually held on by a threaded rod. I'm sorry you had to work on Christmas but maybe the weather will cooperate and allow you some quality time in the woods. Take care my friend.
Vinnie, I got a chance to try out my new Uncle Henry trapper. I had to sharpen it a bit before going to the woods. I harvested a piece of willow growing near the lakes edge with the new knife. Well I have to say it did pretty good, I used your method of bending the limb and taking small cuts at the base to break it off. The Uncle Henry held up just fine with no wobble in the blade. I'm going to make myself a new walking stick with this piece of wood. I took it back to the garage and began to debark the limb for drying purposes. The blade material in this knife reminds me of the Rough Rider trapper you did a review on along side the Case trapper. Its not a bad knife for the money. The weather here seems a lot like Ireland this time of year. I located a dead pine stump and was able to obtain some fat wood as a fire starter, this stuff works great in damp weather. Take care my friend and enjoy the rest of your week. Oh I almost forgot, I have a fine grit stone I used to put a final edge on the Uncle Henry and immersed the stone in water to help with sharpening.
