  • A review of the Lidl wildlife surveillance camera. The camera can be set to 3mp, 5mp, 8mp, 12mp, or 16mp for photographs. The higher the megapixel setting shows greater detail but uses more memory. Video resolution can be set to 1920 x1080, 1280 x 720, 640 x 480 or 320 x 240. Again the higher the resolution shows more detail but uses more memory.

    Howaye sir,
    As a keen photography enthusiast of almost 40 years...I can tell you that something as good as this unit you reviewed is an absolute bargain.
    the zero natural light footage is more than acceptable in my view and as far as the infra red light being visible to the naked eye that did not seem to bother most of the subject animal's appart from the fox.
    There is a new version with wi-fi connectivity going on sale from Thursday 16 September.
    Keep up the good work and Stay safe.

    Aw wow very cool! I didn’t realize you had such diverse wildlife. In my area, in the south east US, we’re very lucky to see the odd red fox or mountain lion as it’s mostly whitetail and black bears. What kind of hunting and or trapping background do you have?

    • @vinniesdayoff3968
      @vinniesdayoff3968  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Grew up hunting small game with my dad. Pheasant duck and rabbits mostly. We trapped for pest control. Rats and mink using cage traps and fenn traps. We snared foxes. We only have ref foxes here. In the seventies there was market for fox fur but since then it is for predator control to help some dwindling bird species and to protect our poultry. I got a Deer Licence about seven years ago. Up to then it was very difficult to get a centrefire rifle in Ireland.

      I’d be keen to try small game hunting. I honestly don’t have the stomach for breaking down large animals, bit of a puss.
      I’ve actually seen two mountain lions in the forest near my house. A childhood friend and I walked up on them on accident on a trail we built. I hear horror stories of how dangerous they are but as soon as we saw them they disappeared. “Ghosts of the forest” definitely fits the bill. I’m in no hurry to see another one lol.
      There’s rumored to be black panthers living in the area as well. I think it might be a bit of an urban legend but I’ve heard cries at night in the country that were very convincing. Chilling.

    About 500 metres East of my place is a 2.500 year old castle ruin, it has a lot of Holm Oak where wild pigs go to eat the acorns, I would love to try to film them with something like this camera. Nobody ever sees the pigs just their tracks and where they dig so it would be very interesting.

      Hi Vinnie I don't know if these are anything like the Jabali in Southern Spain which can be quite aggressive, from the tracks I would guess they are smaller and have heard nothing about them attacking anyone. That's what would make a camera so useful.

  • @billycarter747
    @billycarter747 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    How long did you find the batteries lasted? Is the battery cover well sealed from the elements? Overall is it of a quality that will withstand the British weather. Often you get what you pay for but it looks decent for the price. A few weeks ago I woke up 4 am for the loo. As always on returning to bed I peak out of the window to check car etc. By absolute luck there were 6 adult deer leading the way with 4 young ones in tow. It blew my mind that they would venture into a semi urban st on an estate with the woods a good half mile off. I was also unaware that they roamed in groups as I always saw them as lone creatures unless with young. A once in a lifetime spot but would love to catch them on camera

    • @vinniesdayoff3968
      @vinniesdayoff3968  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The camera is hinged in the middle and opens in two halves if that makes sense. I found it to be well sealed. It was out in plenty of rain without any problem. The battery compartment can only be accessed from the inside when you open the unit. The only problem I found was when dew settled on the lens at dawn. Then you got a blurry image but I could still make out what I was looking at. The condensation evaporated as the sun came up. I can't say how long the batteries would last. It depends on how many images or videos were captured. I set it to take video and I set the interval to be short as I wanted plenty to look at. It will use batteries in that situation but I enjoyed the videos and did not begrudge the batteries. I found I had to edit the video clips one at a time to save them. I couldn't put them all together at once. Perhaps that was just my laptop? As you say you get what you pay for. If you want really good video quality you will have to go more upmarket. I have seen fantastic video quality on some reviews of other cameras, but if you just want to see whats going on in your area these will do that for you. All I can say is that I have no regrets. It is lovely to look at these animals going about their business. I hope that is a help to you. All the best. Vinnie

    I'm having trouble with a horrible neighbour who is constantly climbing over my fence. I have complained to the council and they are close to evicting. Despite this the neighbours behaviour has continued. I'm going to use this for security? I'm going to set this up pointed towards my fence in the hope that my neighbour climbing over will active it? Do you think that would work? There's no noise is there?

    • @vinniesdayoff3968
      @vinniesdayoff3968  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Stephen. there is no noise but the infra red LED's look like two small glowing red lights and might be spotted by your intruder especially if he sees them coming on or activating as he approaches the camera. There is no point covering them as they provide the illumination that allows the camera to "see" in the dark. If you have not already bought the Lidl camera there are other trail cameras on the market that have invisible infra red LED's and they might be a better option. If you already own the camera I suppose it would be worth a try and hopefully your neighbour won't spot it and take it with him. I feel sorry for you as there is nothing worse than a bad neighbour.

    Have you thought about bushcrafting a coracle for a video? The method where the ribs are driven into the ground, the boat completed upside down, then ribs pulled out of the ground or cut away always fascinated me. I have thought about it a lot and discussed not a coracle but a curragh extensively with my friend from Uraguay wavepropulsion1. Some problems with building a coracle would be getting my hands on a bull hide (if going traditional) and from what I see paddling the thing after it was built 🙂 I reckon live saplings would be the way to go. They were on sale here in Ireland on 25th of April. They seem to have them on offer every six months or so. You need to keep an eye on Lidl's upcoming offers and be in early if you want one.

      Yes, I bought one from Lidl a few years back to use on my allotment and have captured lots of shots of wildlife. I have been really pleased with it. The one thing it didn’t have was the temperature on the display.
      I will have to see if they have any of these newer ones left, thanks for the review 👍

    Edit:- I dislike motion sensors for the reasons that you state. I have motion sensitive security lights at my home...always coming on due to leaves blowing in the wind, etc. Much better would be heat sensors...infra-red. But not if they look like two eyes!!

      Hmmm, that damn Jack Russell stealing the show again! Damn him and his good looks :-) You get infra red LEDs that are not visible but I am led to believe the visible type have more range. So I'm told anyway Richard. That's a movie I didn't know about that I have to watch now.

    Hi Vinnie - great video - very thoughtfully put together - are you still keen on the camera ? I found your post as Lidl is selling them this month (or at least in South England) at £79.99 - I wonder if it's the same model ? Here's the link Vinnie in case you're interested - Alan

      Hi Alan. It certainly looks like the same model. I still like the camera and I find it useful to see what's going on and exactly what animal is diong what. As I said in the video this is my first trail cam so I have nothing to compare it to but I enjoy it very much and the images are good enough for me.

      Thank you Vinnie for exciting me with nature's possibilities - I think I will look for a camera like yours but where the infrared is invisible if it's not too expensive. I meant to add that I'd like it to occasionally double-up as a security device if possible - cheers
