Steven Universe: Rebecca Sugar's Broken Punishment System
Steven Universe crafted some of the most realistic youth of all time but they were all ironically raised using one of the most questionable parenting styles of all time. Let's took a closer look at the parents of Steven Universe in order for us to expose the full extent of the damage done because of their lack of discipline and punishment. Steven Universe: Rebecca Sugar's Broken Redemption System

Steven Universe became one of the most emotionally mature cartoons of the decade but fell short when it came to addressing it's most controversial redemption arcs in a satisfying manner before the series came to an end. Steven Universe crafted one of the most popular fusion systems of all time but fell short when it came to writing consistent fusion mechanics. Why do Gems dance to fuse if they don't need to? Why do some fusions seemingly get weaker when they fuse and has fusion really always been an allegory for one of the most adult acts out there? Relevant links and information below. I think lapidot is the best
Rebecca Sugar with Steven Universe sez, sex is natural, sex is love, hermaphroditism is real, love can exist in multiple permutations, so long as it is love, it is sex, and visa versa. Heteronormative clueless society done be like: Watt?!
Honestly has a huge peridot fan I was very alarmed by the thumbnail but I was pleasantly surprised by an actually good video!
I know Peridot fans are built different, I wouldn't dare. 😉
If you look at their relationships. Sapphire and Ruby were a fusion of love, they didnt need to dance and they formed a healthy relationship of trust. Fusing with a similar gem is probably easier to do as well as they may have similar mind sets. But when you get to cross gem fusions that do not have a similar mindset or a romantic interest its harder to fuse. Dancing naturally brings people in sync with eachother so it could be the way they developed the means to get on the same level to try and stabilize an unstable fusion. You can see it when Amethyst and Pearl fuse, complete opposites, they're trying to synchronize and cant even do that but as soon as Steven was in danger they are able to fuse almost instantly because they have a common goal. Save Steven.
Horray more comic stuff!!!!!
@@SterlingCalm Of course, we're keeping this train going until December because that's literally when I'll run out of canon comics! 🤣👍
@@TheCrowReviewer Am so glad that you're going through all the canon comics. Such a shame they didn't do one for future though
@@SterlingCalm I couldn't agree more!
If you look at closely, in fusion you connect your body, your mind, your soul. You create a different being together, a manifestation of both of you. It's not sex. I remember the scene where garnet saw the forced fusions of the gems in that one episode and her reaction says it all. It's like the gems' bodies were being violated by homeworld forcing their pieces to be together. I think that made me interpret fusion as a way of binding oneself to another, whether it's romantic, platonic, or familial love. It's a trust bond, it's a sort of sacred bond, the combination of your strengths and weaknesses. It's not sex, it's deep connection.
Well, the thumbnail might be a *little* extreme for what was talked about in the video. xD
@@Jenna-hu7mp No worries, at least Peridot is still alive. 🤧
In regards to people thinking this video would be about gems: it's the thumbnail. The thumbnail drives more traffic since gem punishment is a more naturally popular topic, but the subject matter is all human. Strategically I think it's necessary but it's not ideal.
@@MrRyanroberson1 Yeah, we talked about the gems who escaped punishment during my previous video but in short all of these videos are part of a series. I'm covering all of the canon comics plus discussing interesting aspects of the show until I compile all of these videos together into one mega video during December. 😅

I just read your previous comment about the video request, I'm going to do more research into this movement for sure! I've apparently been living under a rock for the past couple of months, RIP Cartoon Network. 🥲
"Mods, shatter her gem, thank you."
When I watched this, I assumed it would talk about gems like lapis, peridot, jasper, bismuth, spinel and the diamonds not receiving any punishments for their crimes against humanity. I thought that was what this video was about, but regardless, it had some nice details about young children needing discipline in order to be safe from the bad things in life and how understanding what is right and wrong gives them a clearer sense of how to protect yourself from the dangers of the world. Keep up the good work TheCrowReviewer. 👍
Hahaha, this was the discussion in the previous video which tells me that I need to get better at packaging these videos! Also I appreciate you being early + always being active, Legendary. 😁🍻
@ Thank you man. I really appreciate it. Also I just recently thought about the episode why so blue from Steven Universe Future and I thought about Freckle Lapis and Curly Lapis wondering how their stories would take place in the show but off screen. Personally I thought maybe Curly Lapis joined a group of rebel gems who hate Steven and the new law system of era 3 and want revenge on the crystal gems. For freckles I wondered how she handled things off while starting her new life in little homeschool.
@@LegendaryGamerX-s4s That's fair, Why So Blue was easily one of the best episodes of SU Future and yeah if the show ever returned I'd be interested to see both of the new Lapis make a return! I never thought about the idea of there ironically being a rebellion against The Crystal Gems but it would make sense as a natural progression... Steven did change gem culture without any warning. 😯
@@TheCrowReviewer That’s completely understandable. I hope Rebecca Sugar brings the show back with all of the characters from Future and we get to see a new war between the Era 3 rebellion and the Crystal Gems. That would be SICK!! Maybe even see Freckle Lapis and CG Lapis try to redeem Curly Lapis.
Well assuming the Diamond juice theory holds, aka they need the Diamonds to create new gems, any lasting damage to them is basically genocide of the gem race. There would be no new gems. And they are effectively gods powerwise compared to the rest of the gem race, even after they officially relinquish political power. So yeah, no way the Diamonds were ever going to get a punishment proportional to their crimes to the extent what they did even constitutes a crime that can be prosecuted - thousands of years have passed since the failed colonization of Earth. I think their changes is as much to appease Steven as it is a lasting change in perspective, probably with the thought in the backs of their minds that Steven's human friends will be gone in a litteral blink of their eyes so they can take their time building a strong relationship for Steven eventually moving to Homeworld. Earth won't offer him much in a century, his family will be the gems and the diamonds.
I think Greg was worried he'd end up becoming like HIS parents, if he chose to be the way you described in terms of firm parenting. As we saw in the episode Mr. Universe, it seems as though Greg's folks didn't really care about HIS emotional needs anymore than Steven claimed Greg didn't care about HIS
Yeah, Greg's fear of becoming his parents pushed him to the complete opposite side of the spectrum, resulting in him giving Steven unlimited amounts of freedom which is just as unhealthy! I've recently discussed Greg's parenting style in more depth during my parenting video but *the curious aspect* about all of this is basically that every other parent on the show also subscribed to Greg's style of parenting. No matter how "strict" they appeared to be at first, they all bent at the slightest bit of unease from their children resulting in... chaos. 🤔👍
Ronaldo: said racist things about the gems, joins the crystal gems without asking, Steven convinces the other gems to let him in, Ronaldo abuses Steven
The best pacifist characters at some point in their journeys understand that they should do everything in their power to solve problems without violence… But at the same time always being ready to fight if an enemy will never show mercy to you or innocents Luke Skywalker, Vash the Stampede, Shinji Ikari
Good lesson, I see 1 was supposed to live. Difference is I spoke more
I side with Connie id first be worried if the person I loved sacrificed themselves for me then be upset at them and confused
Fusion is an allegory for love and it’s meant to be just as vague. You love your friends and your family differently than you love a significant other, but it’s still love all the same; that’s how Steg and many of the other Steven fusion aren’t “ewwy”
I did not expect “you know, I’m starting to think.”
I am a month late but I am pretty sure that the common factor between all fusions is just being emotions. Garnet was first fused by 2 gems that were both confused, scared, and concerned which had them fuse at a single touch since they synced in emotions. They later unfused once they started having different emotions which destabilized the fusion and thus, poofed back into normal gems Ruby and Saphire. We keep seeing this common equation, and dancing was included only because when dancing do we see the gems (and humans) dancing for fun, which creates equal joy and thus results in fusion. During battles, they are all determined and thus a fusion. When all of them see Steven getting smacked around, it leads to anger and thus just need a touch to fuse since they are all in the same page of emotion. Its really funny once I started looking back through the episodes and seeing the pattern.
