Bluebird feeds giant grub to nestling, but it's too big!
This male Eastern Bluebird parent gets an award for finding a huge grub (beetle larva) and trying to give it to a nestling. But the nestling is only 3 days old, and it can't possibly swallow such a large item. It takes the dad 2.5 minutes to realize that, and then he swallows it himself. Can't let a good grub go to waste!

Male bluebird feeds incubating female a moth
มุมมอง 179หลายเดือนก่อน
In an instance of "courtship feeding" a male Eastern Bluebird fed his mate a moth as she was incubating eggs. The extra nutrition in much appreciated by the female, as she has just finished the egg-laying period.
Bluebird finally decides it's had enough of a wasp sharing its nest
มุมมอง 259หลายเดือนก่อน
Wasps sometimes build their nests in the same boxes at Eastern Bluebirds. We were watching today as a wasp came and went, apparently planning to build a nest hanging above the bluebird's nest while she incubates. Would she do anything about it? We got our answer after the wasp found its way to a lower corner of the box and she disposed of it.
red squirrels copulate while inside wooden nest box

This nest box was built for screech-owls, but some American Red Squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) have moved in, and now they are interested in having babies! The video shows a male enter first through a hole in the bottom of the box. This is not a hole we made; it was gnawed by the squirrels. The female enters from the same hole right after the male. Then the two do what the birds and the be...
Good night, Gray Squirrel!
มุมมอง 1256 หลายเดือนก่อน
A gray squirrel enters our owl box at 6:39pm local time and started arranging its bedding for a warm night's sleep. We added wood chips at the base, but all the grass and moss were brought in by the squirrel.
Flying squirrel investigates our owl box for the first time
มุมมอง 1997 หลายเดือนก่อน
This box was installed 8 days ago and while it was intended for a Screech-owl, we are fine with having a flying squirrel visit. Will this be its first and only time, or will it be a regular user of the box?
Super-concentration of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds at a Pennsylvania feeding station
มุมมอง 6019 หลายเดือนก่อน
Jeffrey Pawlak of Fayette County, Pennsylvania, invited us to his home where he and family members have been filling hummingbird feeding stations every year for 30 years. The duration of operations and daily maintenance has led to an assembly of up to 50-60 individuals visiting at a time. The numbers go up in August after the young from multiple nearby nests have fledged. We got to witness this...

Lovely arrangement. How do you keep the squirrels and raccoons away? Right now we are battling with raccoons!

Thank you! We are planning for a different camera soon so we can get close-up views. Maybe by the end of the summer we will have that in place. Anyway, with squirrels and raccoons I think we're just lucky. The three poles supporting our feeders have "stovepipe" baffles so that keeps most rodents and raccoons away. However, there is plenty of vegetation from which a squirrel could jump and access the feeders from the top. We had one squirrel who did that in late summer 2022. I trimmed one small branch and moved the nearest feeder post about 9 inches (that's all I could do at this site). Either that did the trick, or the gifted squirrel died. Either way, we haven't had a squirrel problem since. As I'm sure you know, this is never a battle that ends. Good luck in your quest against raccoons!

Wow, thank you! We are still playing around with it. The camera has some issues like glare that I want to fix but I'm not sure it's fixable. I'm not pleased with it yet, so your complement makes me feel better!

What an experience. One of my favorite beings right now is a mourning dove female. I have found them to be the friendliest of all native birds. I don't want to ever feed a bird out of my hand or get too close to them because I don't want to normalize them to humans, but they approach me and my nature to mostly all animals is to be as much as a gent as possible. I'm protective of a lot of wildlife so I want them to stay at my place where I do my best to protect them from irresponsible pet owners, and I also feed them on my window sills. In the opposite side of the room from where the windows are is where I often have my Chromebook and I've noticed a few times as I'm doing my kitchen work, they'll watch whatever TH-cam videos are playing. I'm actually wondering if it would interest or be helpful to you if I played music to them while they perched on my windows and recorded it with my Akaso EK7000 4K action camera.

Saint Vincent College sounds like such a wonderful dream College to me, would loved to have studied Ornithology. Newark on Atlantic flyway, yesterday was bad at one skyscraper found 30+ expired Warblers, rescued 6. Today not so bad just saw a few expired, but Gulls swallow them quick, rescued 3. See many more birds in Fall (more than can be accounted for with the young). A Friend & I rescue songbirds that hit the glass skyscrapers in Newark NJ, TRT made a video named 'Window Strikes in the Business District' of us picking up injured Warblers. In Newark most of the birds that hit the glass skyscrapers perish on impact, or when fall to the cement pavement. We bring injured to TRT for a 2nd chance. I've rescued Tennessee Warblers in past, they have the perfect bird shape they remind me of a green hummingbird without the long beak.

Oh! That's such sad work, discovering all the birds killed on migration by tall buildings! But thank you for your service to the birds that survive.
