  • Jeffrey Pawlak of Fayette County, Pennsylvania, invited us to his home where he and family members have been filling hummingbird feeding stations every year for 30 years. The duration of operations and daily maintenance has led to an assembly of up to 50-60 individuals visiting at a time. The numbers go up in August after the young from multiple nearby nests have fledged. We got to witness this ourselves, and it was a sight (and sound) we never experienced before.
Feeders are stocked with a 4:1 water-sugar solution. Jeffrey says he uses about 200 pounds of sugar each year, as all seven feeders have to be refilled by the end of each day.
A group of hummingbirds is colloquially called a "charm," but professional ornithologists don't use the term in their writings. However, having experienced this amazing thing, we understand the need to have a name that makes it special, and "charm" is certainly appropriate.
