Can Solar Power Keep My Greenhouse Warm AT NIGHT?
In this video I will explore whether a small DIY Thermal Solar collector using evacuated tubes can make an effective heater for winter gardening n a greenhouse in zone 4. This video is primarily an introduction to the concept of the solar heater as well an explanation of how I built the system. I conclude the video with my heat collection calculations after running the system throughout a sunny day in November.
Note that this solar collector is very small and not located optimally. Here are the key data points from this experiment for those who would like to use it for research or feedback. Note that the final measurement was 1.7 degrees colder than the estimated measurement from the video.
Solar Collector Surface Area: 3.3 sq. ft.
Air temp during operation: 43.5 (low) 51.1 (high)
Hours of direct sunlight (operation time): 5.5
Water volume: 32 gallons
Water starting temp: 51.6F
Water high temp: 64.9F
Net change: 13.3 F (video claims 15 F, which is incorrect)
lbs/gal conversion: 8.35
Final BTU's Harvested: 32(gallon)*8.35(lbs/gal)*13.3 = 3553.8
(Notes: 1. the water volume and weight is approximate; 2. Video claims 4008 BTU, which is incorrect.)
Estimated Solar heat available per sq. ft. at earth's surface: 450 BTU
Advertised efficiency of Evacuated tubes: ~60%
Estimated optimal collection/sq ft. 450*0.6 = 270BTU
Estimated optimal collection for system: 450(max BTU)*3.3(sq. ft)*0.6(eff) = 891 BTU
Estimated cost/kwh= 0.11
Estimated BTU/hr output for 1500watt heater: 5100.

Growing Potatoes In Cardboard & Straw - Results From 35 Row Feet

    For anyone trying this at home, be careful burning galvanized metal like that. I don't know what temperature range this method creates, but if the fire gets hot enough it can burn the galvanized coating and create highly toxic gas. I always try just keep galvanized metal away from my fires as a rule of thumb

    I would encourage you to do this as often as you have a big batch of paper. In Nigeria during the 80's the schools would collect all the workbook notebooks from all the children after a semester. After the checking and grading they would dump it in a vacant lot and burn it all. Obviously it did not burn through in one day. It continuously smoked for a week. The earth there was so dark and soft. Since I was young then I did not know about biochar. It came to be that I needed to some soil for garden pots. On a no school day, I went in there and dug a hole and filled up a sack of pure biochar paper. It had many earthworms. I grew much tomatoes with that and roses too. The soil was so fertile. TH-cam would not allow me to subscribe. Telling me I have too many channels subscribed to. Will subscribe as soon as the glitch happens.

    Wow, I've never been first to comment on a video before. I've been making my own teas for a while now but I always try to watch as many videos as I can - just in case there's something new I haven't heard of yet. So many methods and so little time to test them. The new info I have learned from your clip is using oatmeal to raise the fungal content. After watching some Elaine Ingham (I think I spelled her name right)stuff it seems that the fungal component is incredibly important so any way I can improve that is something I want to do. Have you tested your teas to confirm what the added oatmeal does or is it just something you heard about and decided to try? Anyhow, thanks for giving me something to study up on. And just so you know, you have now made it all the way to Australia - where I am. Well done.

    are there alternatives for the crosscut paper shredder?

    • @modernfreedom1651
      @modernfreedom1651 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you could use a version of this TLUD to create biochar (charcoal) with most dry organic matter. Results may vary based on the input material, but some possibilities include dry leaves, sticks, pine needles (?), pine cones, wood pellets, etc. If you are using cardboard, but no shredder, you could probably tear/cut the cardboard and skip the shredder--but it might not burn as evenly/cleanly. I've thought about running cardboard through a mulcher, but haven't tried yet, so I don't know if it would work. Does that answer your question?

    Your worms don't escape with no lid?

    • @modernfreedom1651
      @modernfreedom1651 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as the bin is established and the living conditions in the habitat are reasonably good, it is very rare for worms to venture out (in my experience). You will want to keep light above the bin for the first few days after setting it up since the worms tend to want to wander more when they are in the new environment.

    Apologies in that I cannot cite my source, but I remember seeing a video when initially researching bokashi, and whilst one would normally dilute 100 to 1 for outdoor plants, the ratio for houseplants is 200 to 1. Used bokashi for 6 months now, I throw into a compost bin post fermentation, works well, and I have literally not thrown any food out to the council rubbish services during that period. I like that it can deal with meat and citrus

    • @modernfreedom1651
