Monster Movie is killer

What a year for albums! Maybe its slightly below 1971 but not by much. 'Atom Heart Mother' has a great side 1 but side 2 is not quite as interesting. Although "Fat Old Sun" is pretty good. B-Tier is probably where it should go. Cheers.

My favourite 1970 album is George Harrison‘s ATMPM!

I'm not quite sure I can process a world view in which The Brady Bunch outranks The Smothers Brothers.

Many great albums on your list. My three favourites are Black Sabbath, Morrison Hotel and Paranoid. I also love Led Zeppelin III, Deep Purple In Rock, Sunflower, Loaded, Let It Be, McCartney, Plastic Ono Band, All Things Must Pass and The Man Who Sold the World. Some others I would add are Soul Rebels- Bob Marley and the Wailers, Fun House - The Stooges, Elton John self titled, T Rex self titled, Beard of Stars - Tyrannosaurus Rex, and Beaucoups of Blues - Ringo. There are some good live albums from that year, too.

All Things Must is S++ IMO

Excellent choices, excellent ranking, but I'd put A Question of Balance in the S ranking.

I wouldn’t call this my favorite year, but its the year I own the most albums from. ‘American Woman’ is very strong (A). I’d put ‘Bridge’ in A, but only because I’ve only heard it once. George Harrison is also A, and the Apple Jam absolutely counts towards the album, whether people want to admit it or not. ‘McCartney’ is S tier, indeed. ‘Morrison Hotel’ is one of my favorite albums of all time. Definitely S tier for me. ‘Abraxas’ I need to hear more, but its an A for now. ‘Paranoid’ is obviously in S tier, as is ‘John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band’. Another S for ‘Let It Be’ and A for ‘Deja Vu’. I would put ‘Deep Purple In Rock’ in B as well. Maybe I need to hear it more. I definitely prefer the Black Sabbath debut, which is easily S tier. The third Led Zeppelin album would go in A tier. Some great ones missing are ‘Share The Land’ (A), ‘Climbing!’ (A), ‘Idlewild South’ (A), ‘John Barleycorn Must Die’ (A), ‘Chicago II’ (A), and ‘Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus’ (A). There’s many more, but that’s what comes to mind.

Hi Larry. I was pleased to see your rankings of and comments about Atomic Rooster. As you mentioned, Death Walks Behind You has no weak links.

Has to be a strong contender for greatest year in music (well for rock anyway).

Pretty stacked year. The only ones I would add that I've heard are The Flame and Ringo's first two albums. All A tier for me. So cool that Sunflower made your top 10; songs like "All I Wanna Do" and "Cool Cool Water" are astounding for their time.

My S tier albums would be (in no particular order) Chicago; CSNY Deja Vu; Elton John Tumbleweed Connection; Grateful Dead Workingman's Dead; Andrew Lloyd Weber & Tim Rice Jesus Christ Superstar; Jackson 5 Christmas Album (nostalgic value); ELP; Grateful Dead American Beauty; Sly & the Family Stone Greatest Hits; Chet Atkins & Jerry Reed Me & Jerry. Since you asked: Atom Heart Mother is D.

Great list!! I agree with almost all rankings. I know there are no live albums or else "Live At Leeds" and "Get your ya-ya's out!" would be in. Missing are some good albums but You chose 54!! so it's no big deal. No one would make a list of 1970 without some great albums out and let's say everybody has different tastes!! So I would include "In the Wake Of Poseidon" King Crimson, "Fun House" The Stooges, "After The Gold Rush" Neil Young, "Workingman's Dead" Grateful Dead (American Beauty is good too but not so essential to me) "Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs" Derek And the Dominos and "Fire and Water" Free. Carry On Larry!!!

"Let it Be" is such a curious animal, isn't it? As a Beatles album, I don't think anyone argues it's their best work, and I certainly don't think so either. It was an attempt at an album that was pretty much abandoned by the artists themselves, and that says something. Phil Spector came in to pick up the pieces and the result, at times, is a very un-Beatlesque sound. McCartney pretty much disowned the 1970 release. Harrison's two contributions pale next to his outstanding songs on "All Things Must Pass," not that this was his fault. Lennon seems...disinterested? His work on his solo material released the same year is much more interesting. And yet...and yet! The title song, "Across the Universe," "Long and Winding Road," "Get Back" - next to most "ordinary" bands this album is definitely S-Tier. In the end, I suppose I'd have to put "Let it Be" on my own S-Tier list as well, but golly I'm conflicted about it.

What a great list! I'm glad you put The Beach Boy's Sunflower in S as to me it's their best album along with Pet Sounds. I would include James Taylor's Sweet Baby James album as well.

Holy moly!!! As a huge Jimmy.Page, John Bonham and Jeff Beck fan how have I never heard of Lord Sutch??!! Went and listened to about half of the first song on the album. You're right about the singer, the weak point, but the rest of the band sounds good. Really looking forward to hearing all of Bonham's playing on it.

All Things Must Pass is the best “Beatle” album solo or otherwise IMO.

A year without sparks. I came to know Sparks with these series. Some great albuns, specially in the70s, even though they go sounding more and more like South Park canadian songs "( "blame canada," and many others) . I wonder if Sparks didn´t ghost write and ghost performed the canadian songs featured in many south Park episodes

I owned a few of those albums Larry,Let It Be,McCartney,Paranoid,Simon and Garfunkle's Greatest Hits,No Dice and Led Zeppelin III and I should have bought a few others,1970 was a pretty good year album wise. Bob

Good choices. I would have placed 'In Rock' in A tier and 'Bitches Brew' in S.

BTW, I think it is better to use the RYM Popular feature (instead of Top feature) if you want to recap the list of albums for a year. Otherwise you just end up scrolling through a bunch of obscure albums that you dont recognise

Zeppelin III has been my favorite for the last 10 years or so. Like you said, it was a daring move to make the songs acoustic based. Its an interesting album. Physical Graffiti would be 2nd - like 1A and 1B. Never got into Presence so it would be at the bottom

Blue Mask S tier, probably my favorite of his. My favorite of the year, closely followed by X-Under the Big Black Sun

Not my favorite year for albums I believe the music scene was moving in the direction of dance club stuff it was more about that than great Rock albums. that idea lasted a long time

Rounding out S tier for me that year would be The Who Sell Out, Pretty Things -SF Sorrow and The Kinks -Something Else Safe as Milk would top out my A list

Top 3 for me, certain S tier, are VU and Nico, John Wesley Harding and Forever Changes.

Ultimate Classic Rock has a list of the "worst Beatles solo albums" which I think is calling for a Canadian Studmuffin video review. ;)

S tier albums from 1981 not listed worth checking out are Wild Gift-X(my AOTY) and Youth of America-Wipers. I might move Trust by EC up to S tier, I think his most underrated album. Flowers of Romance by Public Image LTD and Killers from Iron Maiden are A tier

Hey Larry good show per usual. Moving Pictures and Abacab are in my top 15-20 albums of all-time...definite S tier imo. I too love Keep it Dark and Another Record for deep tracks off Abacab. 1981 has 50+ albums that are excellent quality rock n roll records. I was 12 in 1981 so it influenced me differently . I would have 10-20 releases in S tier. Webb in ATL

I'd still go to my grave thinking that Born to Run is one of the 5 greatest rock albums of all time. But I do enjoy working my way through these with you. Keep it up.

Face Value is a great album. I also love October and Almost Blue which is the only Elvis Costello album I own. Some other great albums from 1981 are: Killers - Iron Maiden For Those About to Rock …- AC/DC Diary of a Madman - Ozzy Osbourne Mob Rules - Black Sabbath Heaven Up Here - Echo and the Bunnymen Juju - Siouxsie and the Banshees Point of Entry - Judas Priest Nightclubbing - Grace Jones Movement - New Order Music from the Elder - Kiss and one of my favourite Ringo albums - Stop and Smell the Roses

My fav from that year is 'Moving Pictures'.

The J.Geils band was short lived with me, when Freeze Frame came out that is when I lost interest, although the title song is good and I like it, and maybe a couple more on the album, but for the most part, not that good in my opinion. Full House to me is their best. 😎👍

In my opinion Rush's Moving Pictures is a masterpiece. Abacab I love the drum track on the title song. 😎👍
