    Richie Blackmores guitar solo in Rainbow’s stargazer is one of my favorite guitar solos, and the three Iron Maiden guitarists, Glimour, Santana, Neil Young, Junior Kimbrough, Jimmy Paige, Scott Gorhan of Thin Lizzy, Empuu of Nightwish, and Steve Vai are my S tier guitarists

    For me, Robin Trower, formerly of Procol Harum, later forming his own band, is an obvious omission.
    Trower ranks up there with the very best.
    I could be wrong, but I don't recall Carlos Santana being mentioned. Santana is also one of the greats.

    Very solid ranking. I see Simon Edwards is asking about Carl Wilson haha. I'd put him as a strong B. Not the most spectacular talent, but he had much better chops than he often gets credit for. Came up with many classic riffs for Brian too, like the one in "Dance Dance Dance."

  • @morrisgautreau6704

    Great choice putting Alex Lifeson in the S-Tier, so versatile. Ace Frehley is good in the A-Tier, can't argue with that. Randy Rhoads, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai (who was sadly not in this list) all belongs in S-tier. And then there is Adam Jones (Also not in list) from my favorite band of all time: TOOL, which oddly enough is at the front of A-Tier, he's great, but just not as awesome as his bandmates, funny to think he's the weakest link in TOOL, but still couldn't be TOOL without him!

    Weird to see Pete in B, while his peers land in A. The Beatles are my favorite band, but Pete is absolutely a better guitarist than George and Paul. The thing with Pete is that he can reach Jimmy Page levels when he wants to, as heard here: th-cam.com/video/NsjNG1PGz6k/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared. I get that he doesn’t do a lot of solos, but his rhythm playing definitely displays his skills. Think of the magnificent fast strumming of “Pinball Wizard” or his playing on “Sunrise”. Definitely an underrated guitarist overshadowed by drummer and bassist.

      @@LarryGravesCanadianStudmuffin It's true, that most would put Pete Townshend in "S" tier. He was probably a big influence on Jimi Hendrix. As for his solos, I think Pete Townshend played more guitar solos in his live shows than in the studio. I'd rank Pete in "S" tier. Think how much he stood out in the '60's? Many guitarists were copying his style, and even into the '70's.

    • @goldrag3163
      @goldrag3163 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@jameswilson7084 Pete was definitely employing some proto-psychedelic techniques on the "My Generation" album. Some of that stuff reminds me of what Hendrix and others would do later. Some cool guitar bits in "Out In The Street", "The Ox", and of course the title track. Also, the mid section of "I'm A Man" is so trippy for 1965. Truly ahead of his time.

  • @ernestcruz6316

    Not sure how the list creator thought to include Hank Williams Sr. in a list of the greatest guitarists, since we really can't tell how good of a guitarist he actually was. As a soloist he only did one recorded guitar solo (on "My Bucket's Got a Hole in It"). The rest of his recorded guitar work is strumming his own accompaniment, as he used session guys like Chet Atkins and Jack Shook in addition to his own regular lead players, Bob McNett and Sammy Pruett. As a singer and composer of country music? Maybe even above S tier. Guitarist? Strictly a strummer, at least until we can truly judge for ourselves.

  • @antoniodias4718

    Great list as usual. For me I agree with almost all classifications although I would put Mick Taylor as S and Eric Clapton as S too. Missing are excluding the ones you said you wouldn't rank because you don't know enough of their career: Steve Hacket (Genesis, solo) A, Al Di Meola (Return To Forever, solo) S, Martin Barre (Jethro Tull) A, Davey Johnstone (Elton John) A, Duane Allman (Allman Brothers Band) S, Dickie Betts (Allman Brothers Band) A, Gary Rossington (Lynyrd Skynyrd) A, Alvin Lee (Ten Years After) A, Albert Lee (Head, Hands, and Feet, Eric Clapton) S, Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter (Lou Reed band especially live 1973/1974) A, Roy Buchanan A, Don Felder (Eagles) A, Andy Latimer (Camel) S, Carlos Santana (Santana, solo) S, Mike Bloomfield A, and there are others of course. This kind of ranking is challenging, always missing someone. Glad you included Rory Gallagher. Keep on making these lists!!!

    There's a lot of players controversially missing from the original list, that are normally included: Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Vai stand out as examples. Personally, I don't hold either in too much regard, But it's notable that they are missing. Maybe it means at last that tastes are maturing away from "athletic prowess" as if it were a sport, being a major consideration. Your personal list includes many I wouldn't bother to put into S tier; Jonny Greenwood (eh?) Steven Stills, Joni Mitchell, don't belong on there. I am curious about what evidence Im missing for this?

      I won’t go into Greenwood and Stills, but Joni Mitchell is considered by most guitarists as a veritable genius on the guitar, an experimenter with unique and personal tunings and an expert in a wide range of genres including jazz. She is definitely worth of the highest ranking. I think acoustic players tend to be undervalued in “best of” lists, but Joni is tops.

      @@dalehoustman4737 thanks, I’ll look into her guitar playing further. I also think acoustic players are underrated. In a recent list, Paul Simon was on it. This caused much controversy. But he’s actually a very beautiful player with tremendous sensitivity.

    • @jameswilson7084
      @jameswilson7084 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      When I think of the "Crosby, Stills & Nash" debut album, I think the guitar playing is superlative. And a lot of that is by Stephen Stills. Neil Young occasionally guests. Stephen Stills is playing a lot of those instruments on that particular album. As for Jonny Greenwood, the Radiohead albums "The Bends" and "OK Computer" have great examples of superlative guitar playing, "Paranoid Android" anyone? 😊 And Joni Mitchell has many brilliant moments on the guitar in her music. All three would be in "A" tier on my personal ranking, but I could see why someone would put them in "S" tier.

    I HAVE heard though, that technically, Al Di Meola & Steve Vai are unparalleled, and didn'tsee them on your list. And I have friends who are fairly talented with the guitar, both tell me that Jimmy Page and Joe Perry's guitar-playing is pretty "sloppy". But like I said, I go with how a guitar solo makes me feel, and I really like Page and early Aerosmith.
