Maybe I haven't found it yet, but is there a video on swim technique? Like proper everyday vs. rescue technique? If I recall, as a lifeguard, we were taught to never put your head in the water maintain solid eye contact on the victim, but no one ever talked about what that looked like for efficiency. Do you have a video on that or could you talk about that a little?

I’m 35yr my recruiter said that I’m too old to become a Rescue Swimmer, but I’m in TIP TOP SHAPE! I looked up all the requirements I need to become a rescue swimmer then I cranked up my workouts to cater those requirements. I even took a 8 weeks course from a Rescue Swimmer to build up specific muscles to qualify. With that being said, my recruiter STILL said I’m too old. I refuse to accept that, can you please guide me and tell me what do I HAVE to do to become a Rescue Swimmer?

I went through AW "A" school in Millington, TN from Dec 1972 through April 1973. Cold as hell there in the winter... There was no formal Aircrew school at the time. Water survival was part of "A" school. AW was the only rating guaranteed to fly after "A" school. Anyone wanting to become a flight engineer, Inflight tech or ordnanceman had to be an E-5 to apply to become an airewman. I didn't learn what platform I was going to fly in until I graduated from "A" school. I received orders to FASO / VP-30 in Patuxent River, MD and reported in early May 1973. I was assigned to the acoustic operator side on starting FASO. I then trained on the P-3C with VP-30 at Pax River until August 1973 when I reported to VP-5 in Jacksonville, FL. They were flying the P-3A when I first arrived but transitioned to the P-3C about 3 months afterwards. I didn't go through SERE school or ride the helo dunker until I transferred as an AW1 to the west coast in 1981. I retired as an AWCS in 1998 from VP-46 at Whidbey Island. I was a VP acoustic operator my entire career.

Can you break down the length of FRAC for each of the subclasses (i.e. AWS, AWR, AWO, etc.)? All info says 6-32 weeks depending on what aircraft you’re on. I’ve talked to three recruiters so far and none of them know anything. I want to go for AWS via Reserves.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the loss of tail rotor de-icer grounds to terminate the rescue due to safety? I am not a pilot, but common sense dictates that if there's a problem with your tail rotor, send out a pan alert and land at the nearest safe point BEFORE you get to the Mayday stage. The crew were in contact with their base who could have directed them to a safe landing point. To me, not a democracy, the chopper had become unserviceable; take it back to base and go up in a serviceable chopper.

Hey jeff im deciding on wanting to pursue Navy DMT or aviation rescue swimmer school, im currently running all week, swimming 1000m 5-6 times a week, and doing 250+ push ups/50 pulls, 250 sit ups 3 times a week, while doing up to sets of 50 4 count flutter kicks in between some of those sets. I still feel greatly underprepared though, I know that there will be certain evolutions that will be hard. I find it hard to practice fins & treading because all i have is a 4ft pool available to me, and its hard for me to swim freestyle consistently. I can swim a side stroke petty well though. started practicing my underwater swims as well, was only able to swim a complete 25m underwater once, i think i had a mental plateau after that and only got around 20m after that. I dont have a specific question but when reading this. if you have any advice i would love to hear any!!!

Remember the first top gun movie....I flew rubber dog shit outta cargo plane...C-130 load master. Yes the training is hard and you also got to train with the Marines. And when you're sleeping at night you have muscles at cramp up in your body that you never thought existed after swimming all day and running all day and doing pull-ups and push-ups all day. You get paid to work out and then you go fly and you get flight pay and it's awesome and when you get out the Navy you can get a great job working with airplanes at a commercial airport and I got kicked in the face during the Helo dunker me what a black guy goes cuz somebody panicked and kick me in the face with their boot. You had to stay calm during his training in the water if you panic in the water you will not be successful.

I was a dry crewman, I received my Tom Cruise starter kit on completion of aircrew school and a c-130t loaaster. I served 9/6/2002 to 8/31/2006 before I was medically discharged from a tbi. I got a $6,000 bonus and after taxes I got $4,500 and I didn't get it until I completed all of my schools.and I was at my squadron VR-54.

A very good explanation Jeff. I would only add that for those who retire from military service… only your “pay” and your years in service are what are considered in figuring out your retirement benefit. Allowances are not part of your pay and so are NOT part of your retirement benefits. It’s why I gave up flying and being a rescue swimmer and instead applied for warrant officer during my last tour. The retirement benefit was better because it was all “pay” and not allowances.
