Does it become alcoholic?
A good question. One of the by-products of fermentation is alcohol. After a few days and with it more of a lactobacillis ferment rather than yeast, it is low. Like a kumbucha you would buy from the shops. I have read around 0.5% but can go higher if left to fully ferment all the sugar.
Looks delicious. They actually have silicone mats that serve the same function as the trays you have there. I have found them to be much easier to use than the trays. Using the freezer is a great tip though. Thanks! :)
I really need to get some of those mats you have myself, for when using the Excalibur.
I have never liked fruit roll ups however I’m so up for trying those ones. My kids love them though my girls can’t eat them due to the preservatives in them. I recon I can make these and they will be excited
I totally get that with the shop bought one myself, as there is something reminiscent of plastic about them. That is the one thing I don't find with the home ones and it is really nifty how you can play with flavours to personal taste. And none of those preservatives 😉
switched to forjars lids a while ago (I'm in the states) no fails - many people have switched and you can order in large bulk
btw I use the plastic lids to store dry goods (we can get mason jars very easy- even the Goodwills (thrift store has them all the time- but no lids ) there are plastic lids that are cheaper than the ball. they have a separate gasket - these seal the best I have found-
I'm continuing to have great sucess with them too since buying them. I'm actually wishing we bought more when we did, as the shipping has changed through Forjars direct to Australia. And through Amazon is doable but much more expensive now. It would be incredible to have access like you guys in the US to them, as they are great.
Thanks for the tip.
Oh that blend sounds absolutely delicious, can't wait to try that one
Thanks a bunch Mel. These ones that are super quick to blend and pour, but also taste delicious, are the best given the rate the kids eat them
I happen to have the same ingredients laying around.. maybe some mango too 😊
The addition of mango would be fantastic in this 😋 👌
Yum!
I so agree 😀
Recently made apple and rhubarb roll ups , never made roll ups before , they were tasty
Ooohhh yummy Sylvia. I bet that rhubarb added a nice tart zing to the sweetness.
Yummy
This flavour is super delicious. 👌
we shop like this here in the States- our company is called azure standard- or we go the Amish markets- buying in bulk saves so much money
I see people over there sharing their hauls and my goodness your options look so good with Azure and the Amish markets there 😀
Thankyou
You are most welcome 😀
I am not a big butter user ( only for baking ) but quality always wins out
So agree 😀
I just started some strawberry and melon 🍉 test it out
Ooohhh 😋
I just perceived my first dehydration And ordered some round plastic fruit roll pads I’m using non stick baking sheets at the moment this in mark from the uk 🇬🇧
Those sheets will make it easier Mark 😀
What was the temperature in degrees out side, and how long did you cook. Humble Thanks❤
I honestly can't recall exactly for that day. But for an idea on times and temps you may find this vid helpful. It is an early one we did, but shows more detail on time and temp on a day. th-cam.com/video/9ZIdtiJ8td0/w-d-xo.html
Great video. I don't think I've ever seen an Australian wear a winter jacket before, especially not indoors 😂
Hehe... yes it isn't what people often think of overseas of it here 😅. But it gets super cold here down south and in the Ranges. It was 2°C last night!
I was just wondering about this exact thing the other day. Thank you for sharing! 💚
So awesome to hear it is helpful. Having butter on hand frozen at the island I can imagine would be really handy.
Cinnamon sugar might be better health
Like the cinnamon and sugar mix used on cinnamon scrolls, or is this something different Mark?
@@Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus no I was thinking pound as to help with diabetes And children get use to heath taste 👅
@Mark1gig564 the plums we have are super tart, so doing the plum flavour just isn't really edible without sweetening to taste. But that isn't the case with all fruits we do rollups with. This Friday's upcoming video is a tropical flavour that doesn't need any extra sweetening and is great with just raw fruit too.
👍🥰👌
Thankyou ☺️
Uk 🇬🇧 really ok 👌
So glad i found your channel 😊 there is so much i am learning from you especially as i live nearby 😁
Isn't it just a beautiful place to live.. albeit a bit cold atm!!! Thanks a bunch for your lovely comment. It is wonderful to hear they are proving helpful 💕
Thank you so much for explaining it all so clearly. Would you say that if you have the equipment for water bath canning you dont need a steam bath as they both work for high acid foods? I guess im trying to understand if there is any benefit to getting a steam bath?
Waterbath and steam canning will both preserve the same foods. So you definitely dont need a steam canner. But in saying that I LOVE my steam canner and it is my go-to for canning every time. It is so much quicker, safer and easier, with not having to deal with big pots of water.
@Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus Thank you that's great to know the extra benefits of the steam bath 😊 you don't know these things until you've tried it.
@@chaosinthecraftroom so true 😀
Really good to see this including the price breakdown. Makes me envy those cow owner homesteaders! The taste of cultured butter is next level.
Oh my goodness yes!!! It would be so incredible to have access to your own milk for homemade dairy products.
Love your vacuum seal method. I was at the bulk food store today and saw 1.5kg blocks of butter. I resisted as we just had to defrost our fridge because the freezer was too full. But keeping in mind for my next big baking day 😆
Human vacuum sealer 😂 That is wonderful how you can get access to bulk butter at your bulk store. 😀
Beautiful, I love their milk but haven't tried their butter. I wonder where is their delivery limit.
I'm actually not quite sure. We are quite a ways away from Lakes Entrance here in the Dandenong Ranges.
Ohh I wish that was available in the nsw!
There may be a small dairy in your Region, as with all the media I heard reported that there are quite a few around Australia.
Love freezing butter. I wonder if we’ve got a similar style dairy direct place here in WA
There may be, as with the media I heard it reported there are quite a few around Australia. Personally I'm looking forward to seeing future Rockpile butter 😀
@@Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus same!!!
Enjoy the butter Rachel, just a tad too pricey for my budget. I do that air sucking thing too.🙃😉😊
Hehe. Sucking out the air like that is a good trick 😁
Wish they delivered to me in Queensland. Yummy 🤤 I use a straw to vacuum seal my bags. 😂
Ooohhhh.... a straw is a good tip 👌
I agree that it’s beautiful butter Rach, and the cream is amazing too. Can’t believe Coles is ditching them, but no surprise as it’s all about money, not quality. Enjoy those goodies xx Cathi xx 😘
I so agree Cathi. It is so sad to see the impact of them. Especially understanding the story behind their business. Plus their products are so good.
I first though that you're going to get all those parcels 🎁that were in the car 😮😀
That would have been quite an order!!! 🤣
You guys have yourselves pretty well set up for a fire. One suggestion from a firey of 30 years is to set your incidents app a bit further out than 10kms. I personally have mine at 50kms. If I get a notification on a high fire danger day I just check the location and note wind direction. Not to be too obsessed with notifications but to just be aware of something that could trial pretty fast on a bad day. It could give you more time to get out of that is your plan.
I appreciate that advice, coming from that place of experience.
@@Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus you’re welcome. Time is gold in those types of situations.
Hi. I popped onto the Wild Vanilla website and had a look at ordering some for myself. I noticed the weights are on the website, depending on whether extra long, long or standard : Extra Long (20cm+ with an average weight of 7g) Long (18-20cm with an average weight of 5g) Standard (15-17cm with an average weight of 3.8g) - hopefully that helps you out when you're making your next batch 🙂
I missed that on their website and it would be super helpful to work out how much to order.
Thanks 😊
😀
Such an interesting view of your lives! I love it all! You have so many skills and such a lovely family ❤
Thanks a bunch Melodi and Ryan. Looking forward to chatting with you guys about 'all the things' soon 💗
And the same could be said about you guys and your skills. We could only imagine building a cabin!!! 😀
Great series! Thankyou. Explains a lot for a newbie to canning.
Thanks for your lovely comment Karen. So glad this is helpful.
It’s tacky cus you added sugar not good for fruit roll up 38 hours is outrageous
In the weather conditions we had at that time and with the moisture in that batch, that was the reality of what it took. A batch I did last weekend took 22hrs. And I have had less. This is why I say when dehydrating, never go exact times people say or books, because it varies with conditions and produce. This lot demonstrated that very well and I like to share things that we really experience and not always just the perfect scenario. My saying for dehydrating is always 'it is ready when it is ready'. 😀
Love seeing your day Rach… and a glimpse of you! ❤
Still feeling pretty awkward talking to a camera. It's so easy to chatter away when we are just 'doing stuff'!

@@Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus I am already enjoying all your old videos, so I am sure I will enjoy your future ones.
Brilliant video 🤩 This length video would have taken so much work and you've done so well. Showcasing all the beautiful things about a homesteading life. I love that your biogas? System uses the cooked bones , it's a challenge dealing with them here because of our animals always finding them in other ways we've tried. What a great home you've built up. I'm so glad you're able to enjoy it now after all it's planning and set up. I'm about to do our sauerkraut today , I'll have to find my kimchi recipe . I have a milder version I want to try . Loved this ❤❤Thank you for sharing lovelies and keep warm ❤❤
Awwww 🥰🥰🥰 You are so sweet and I really appreciate your ongoing support and lovely comments. It did take a while for this one. In fact that weekend was nearly a month ago!!!
Beautiful video. Love to see more of these videos. Where did you get your tower garden from ? On your porch
Thankyou Senz for your kind comment ✨️ The vertical planters we use are called Mr Stackys. They have been absolutely fabulous for growing things like strawberries away from the bugs.
What a beautiful place you all have. Amazing.
Thankyou for your lovely comment Sonya. 💕 It still amazes me that this place was on the market so long before we bought it and that someone else couldn't see all the beauty beyond the work needing doing back then. But we feel very lucky for that fact.
Have you considered cooking the eggshells in the fire pit or wood stove or even in the oven when you are baking? Cooked, crushed and added to water with a bit of vinegar, the calcium becomes bioavailable. Chucked whole into the compost, they take forever to break down. I used to get a couple of bunches of bananas almost every shift when I worked at a grocery store. If you peel a banana, you can split it in 3 by pushing your finger down into either end. Perfect size for dehydrating and takes very little time to get them all onto the tray.
I haven't, and it means I have to physically break down the shells more when adding compost to the gardens. Your advice makes so much sense and it is such an excellent idea. I'm thinking for us, the best option would be to add directly into our wood fire inside, being nice and quick to do so at this time of year when it is running all the time. Thanks a bunch for the banana idea too. There is a bit of extra reason we like the slices. The last way longer. Anything we do in bigger pieces gets hoovered up by the kids 🤣 Thanks a bunch for taking the time to share your ideas. I always love shares and am always still learning too ✨️
@@Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus I suspected this was the case with the bananas! I used to just toss the egg shells into the wood stove and then spread the ash on my field in the winter. During summer, I give them a quick rinse as I wash the dishes, let them dry on the counter and store them in a fabric bag hanging on the inside of the cupboard below the kitchen sink. I roughly crush them down in the bag until the bag is full. Then I batch blend them in the blender once every couple of months. Those get bagged (in old zip top cat food bags) until i can bake them on top of the wood stove in a shallow pan. It's really interesting seeing your systems. Thank you for taking the time to film, edit, and post!
@@az55544 it's interesting to hear your method, as this may be super helpful to others as well 😀

Hello, I am going to get 1 male and 1 female so my question is how to know if the egg is edible or if I am going to see a little bird in the pan. ? I can only get 1 man and 1 woman because it is not common in my city. Also, is it safe to have cats around these ducks? Are they prone to running away from home? Thanks. Great Video.
How wonderful. We found our ideal was 2 girls and a boy here. But also had one boy and one girl for some time without issue. Although I'm sure we have eaten many a fertilised egg, we have never had one with a little bird developing. The trick is to pick them up daily and then we pop them in the fridge. If we have missed a couple of days they are also fine. Enjoy your ducks 😀
Can you make a ginger bug with honey? And for how long would you have to feed it
A very good question, but not something we personally have experience with. I definitely know the sodas work with honey, but I'm not sure on the bug itself.
I really wanted to get one of these when we renovated in 2019, but we ran out of $. I wish I’d known about the kickstarter!
It was such an incredible price back then through that kickstarter. We were very lucky to come acrossit at that time. Every so often I see them have sales, so that is worth looking out for.
@@Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus thanks. I’ll look out for sales. I was looking the other day and couldn’t even work out how to buy one!
@merindahthornton5080 I'm a bit out of the loop on that bit. But I had thought you can buy directly via their website. I have done that in the past for replacement carbon filters.
Thank you great explanation I will watch your other videos on canning definately want to give this a go

Put ur pickles in the sun and they will be ready to eat in a day..nice hot sun
That is a tip I have never come across before. Thanks for sharing your method.
Interesting, and we have the same food dehydrator which makes it easier to follow. P. S. You instruct really well, I'm just wondering why the music for filler. You really don't need it.
That is a great dehydrator. It has really lasted the distance over the years and still works as well as when we got it. Hopefully you get some great success with rollups too with your one. Those solid trays make it a lot easier, but you can do a thicker fruit and spread on baking paper if you get stuck without them and want to give it a go. I appreciate the feedback on music. I tend to pop it in when editing and there is a bit when I haven't been chatting away but see the step is important to truly help understand what to do. But it feels kinda awkward when it just goes on with no sound going on. Love to hear how you go with your first rollups. I'm actually in the process of editing a tropical flavour to show a raw fruit rollup too. Just banana, passionfruit and banana and blended. Kids rated this one of the best I have done over the years, so looking forward to being able to share that too 😀
