@@rebeccaragan9916 She’s just the best
The name of the wind. Thanks
@@צמחישראלמרום Fair, very fair
I absolutely love mistborn!
@@lilpopism Just the best twists and worldbuilding aye
Red rising is the greatest of all time
@KamalKhan-l8e You won’t hear any arguments from me here
Have you ever read the Witcher by Andzej Sapkowski????😊 Any thoughts on it??
Wheel of time is a bit of a cruel recommendation! It goes on for ever and ever and ever……. I like the first two or three but got fed up after book six or so😂
@@zoewilkins2896 I completely agree, I liked the first four and stopped at 7. But so many people absolutely love it aye
@SpacedOutReads They do - my SIL read the whole lot and loved them. Not knocking it at all, people are totally entitled to love them if they love them ! (and I did really like the ones I read) I just think that’s a very long series for “beginners” in the genre.
I really enjoyed you talking about your books and your discoverd love for fantasy! I'm currently reading Robin Hobb's first book Assassins appretice and I LOVE it. Have a hard time putting it away. 😂
@@michelebos5231 Thank you so much! And I know exactly what you mean, it’s impossible to put a Hobb book down
Loving the architects shirt ❤❤
@@chloespencer4272 Thank you!! You must have great taste!!
Think I’m the only person that liked EOS the best I loved the setting reminded me of tatooine and also the xenologist part.
@@barnaby4232 I think you may be haha
The size snd thickness of modern 'epic' fantasy is quite intimidating for any beginner, I think. Joe Abercrombie looks to be closer to the right size. I can't wait to finally get on to those. Personally I never start a trilogy or series that is left incomplete. The are so many good older completed ones out there. An easy action filled trilogy that got me back into reading was the Legend of Drizzt-Homeland (forgotten realms). That has to be one of the best trilogy book 1s that I have read. Very different, unique, and action packed. At 350 ish pages it also doesn't break the brain. haha Cheers
@@gerrade71278 There’s a lot of bloated books now aye, Abercrombies are definitely a breath of fresh air!! I have those Drizzit books in my shelf and I do have to get to them, the page count is very alluring too
Raymond E Feist, the entire Riftwar Cycle. Brilliant books.
@@jackieknox939 Great call, I need to get to riftwar this year
This man is so beautiful!!!!!!!! I will get lost in between his cake for the next 360,000 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just finished the Bloodsworn Trilogy the other day and personally really really disliked it. Similar to how you mentioned the Robin Hobb books as being very character focused, I think it would be worth mentioning (maybe for anyone who reads these comments) that the Bloodsworn Trilogy is the farthest thing from character focused that a book can be. They're probably great if you really just want to read a thousand combat scenes back to back, but that's not my thing, and I found them disappointing.
@@zaknapp That’s a very fair point, it’s very action heavy
Awesome, started reading fantasy last year with dune. Flew the four then hit three body problem (Sifi forsure) then ASOIAF which was my favorite thing I’ve read. Now in middle of mistborn!
@@connoramrhein9231 You’re flying through all the best SFF books, so many of the great!!
@ I also read red rising but went to mistborn instead of continuing the series will have to go back to it !
@ You should definitely get back to it, the rest of the books are quite a step up from book 1
Just finished Raising steam. It started off great but phew, that was kinda rough
@@thesaintforever257 That’s very fair, I did love Moista trilogy but I would definitely agree Raising Steam was the weakest
Convinced me to get into the Warhammer novels also now, is it like Discworld where there are various starting points that you could begin from and they are all in the same universe?
@@alexisdritsas I’m glad to hear it! And yes, it’s just like that, but with an outrageous amount of books 😅
Attack on Planet Falrus by Joanna Monigatti. Fantastic read! Highly enjoyable, talk about fantasy!
I haven’t heard about this one before
HARRY POTTER DESERVES TO BE IN TOP THREE!!!!!!!
It’s pretty great aye
I grew up reading fantasy and scfi many decades ago now. I got disillusioned with it when I'd reached the point where I'd read everything in the bookstore fantasy and sc fi section. There was a lull for a few years then a resurgence in new books and new authors but i never really got back into it. I'll try some of the authors you've mentioned that i havent read. Sad to see you didnt include any of the fantasy greats like Tad Williams, Stephen Donaldson or Feist, or even any of the classic easy reading like Anne McCaffrey. Completely agree that Dune gets weird after the first four novels. Unfinished series are off-putting, no matter how good they are. I'd add Brandon Sanderson's Reckoner series as an easy to read series for someone starting out.
There’s so many great reads that aren’t in stores aye, and countless classics I myself haven’t been able to get to yet
Dune is not fantasy
Yea, I’d say it’s more space opera aye
With the hobbit and lotr
🙌🙌🙌🙌
Where do I get this book "June" you keep talking about ?
Haha lol
I need to get back to Warhammer (I'm honestly very rarely drawn to SF for series) but because I'm familiar with his comics work I'm sticking with Dan Abnett's Gaunt's Ghosts for now. The Heroes is actually my 2nd favourite First Law book overall. I got a suprising amount read in January, cuz I shunned larger books for the most part: *DC Comics* Batman Universe Written by Brian Bendis | Art by Nick Derington - So much fun! *Espionage* James Bond 001: Casino Royale - Showing its age in places but I'd a good time. I'll be continuing the series if I need a palate cleanser. *Fantasy* Dagger & Coin 1: Dragon's Path - My favourite start to an Abraham series I've read, tho I was more invested in most of the characters in A Shadow in Summer. This one has a more engaging plot. Earthsea 5: Tales from Earthsea Earthsea 6: The Other Wind - I'm not wild about Fantasy Short Fiction, but its LeGuin, so at worst it was really good but I could've done without most of it. Other Wind was a perfect end to the series, and Firelight was a lovely epilogue. The Heart of What was Lost / Tad Williams - Loved it. Can't wait to start Last King of Osten Ard! *Sci-Fi* Southern Reach 1: Annihilation - Loved it. I will continue the series, but I'm in no rush. Book of the month. *Urban Fantasy* Dresden Files: A Fistful of Warlocks (re-read) Dresden Files: A Restoration of Faith (re-read) Dresden Files 1: Storm Front (re-read) - Did Storm Front on audio, everything else with the eyeballs. While not my absolute favourite, Dresden is consistently the most fun I have with any series. I guess you could call 'em comfort reads as well. I DNFed Brent Weeks' Black Prism (Lightbringer 1), some alright concepts with mediocre delivery. And I NFNed Fugitive Prince (Wars of Light & Shadow 4), I just wasn't giving it the time it deserved so I'll restart it sometime later. Also did a fair bit of gaming. After being kinda mixed but still mostly positive on Spider-man 2 in December I replayed Ghost of Tsushima which I finished a few weeks ago and still loved it. Then I restarted and finally beat Bloodborne, I loved it. For whatever reason it just clicked with me on this attempt.
@@thatsci-firogue Wow, you did get a lot read!! Which First Law book is your favourite? And definitely join me in the imperium of 40k hahahah I’m glad Williams, Abraham and LeQuin are all providing the goods, you’re definitely one of the reasons those three are on my radar/futire tbr I hope you are in the mood for more Wars of Light and Shadow soon, I’m excited I’m able to pick Ships back up today
@SpacedOutReads My personal favourite is the Last Argument of Kings. Of the three, Abraham is my personal favourite, though in terms of "best" it's LeGuin. She's one of the most important and influential writers to have ever lived for many reasons. Her influence on Robin Hobb and Janny Wurts is quite clear, though it's more obvious with Hobb imo (regarding worldbuilding, gender politics and dragons). I hope so, too. I just have to be in a particular mood for Wurts' style, which I'm just not in the right headspace right now for it. If I'm in the mood for a more complex style right now, I'd rather read a standalone or a re-read.
@ LAoK is so great and very fun aye, the man doesn’t miss. I haven’t read any Abraham yet, but I very much intend to, same with LeGuin, it will be fun to see her influence on the two you mentioned. There’s definitely a time for Wurts and not aye
@@SpacedOutReads also, since you like stories about old people looking back on their lives in retrospect, check out Bernard Cornwell's Warlord Chronicles and Guy Gavriel Kay's A Brightness Long Ago.
@ What! I didn’t know Warlord chronicles was told that way! I already wanted to read it, now I need to!!
Awesome video. This has really made we want to check out the Warhammer novels. I've never been into the game, but the fictional universe intrigues me.
@@danfswinnen Thank you!! From what I’ve heard from the community Aaron Dembski-Bowden does the best books and the Night Lords trilogy is very well loved
@@SpacedOutReads Thanks for the recs! Onto the TBR they go.
@ I hope you enjoy, I’ve got them all on my kindle ready to start soon too
I love watching these videos on peoples thoughts of books. I'm such a simpleton when it comes to reading, I never dissect the writing, characters or world building, I mean I can usually tell if it's done well enough or not. I read the book, hype or not, devoured it over a weekend and I'm calling it the best read of 2025 and I finished it mid-January. I don't think this book is WoT level world building but I think it did what it was supposed too, emotional damage lol. 5 stars (though again don't quote me on my 5 stars my only basis for ratings with books is I "that was good! I'll read it again!"). Like I said I'm a simpleton when it comes to reading lol
@@brad5342 It doesn’t sound like you are a simpleton 🤷♂️ I’m glad you had a great time with this one, it’s such a unique special read aye, I hope you are able to find some more top reads this year!!
Kudos for Terry Pratchett Discworld. Yes, light hearted, beautifully written, often hilarious, but makes you think about the message.
@@theimperfectscrapper5313 He just does the best job aye!!! I need to read more of it this year
Dune, was the FIRST book I ever read. That was over 55 years ago. I have since reread it (the entire series) countless times since… at least once per year. I read fantasy and science fiction almost exclusively.
@@TheRubeeRose That’s so awesome, I love that!! I definitely need to reread Dune myself
So glad you enjoyed Live Ship Traders. I'm a third of the way through Fool's Quest, which I don't want to put down. I had some great reads in January, but would have to put The Count of Monte Cristo as my favourite. 💜
@@heathergoldsmith Hobb is just one of the best aye!! I do have to read Count of Monte Cristo this year, glad you had a great time with it
Great video Dylan.. Whats book by Janny Wurts do you recommend reading first?
@@AnonforGod777 This is a great question, if you want to dive into Wars of Light and Shadow I’d start with Curse of the MistWraith. If you want a taste of her writing, To Ride Hells Chasm seems to be the way to go, though I haven’t read it myself. I also haven’t read her empire trilogy yet, but my friend is on the last book, and if you want something easier to read with great politics and worldbuilding that seems a great place too
Looks like you've had a cracking month.. Just orderd first book of Aurora's Cycle for my child, think it will be something she will enjoy from what you described and having a quick look at it. I finished Lies of Locke Lamora, really enjoyed it.. good fun read. Gave it 4.25* I'm about 100 pages to finishing Of Blood and Fire, really enjoying this as well.. I'd say another 4.25* for me. I'll be bouncing between these two series till they I'm finished. Plus I have Disquiet Gods being delivered this week to read. Feb and March should be fun.
@@chrisgoods Sounds like you’ve had a good month too! I need to follow your example and read Lies of Locke Lamora. I hope your daughter has a really fun time with Aurora Cycle, it’s a lot of fun, I’m the last book there is the use of the word fuck, just a little heads up. And I hope you have a great time with The Bound and the Broken!!
You providing your reviews on books you have read is the best. Your view bubbles out through your words, face, hand gestures. I often compare how Hobb weaves concepts of slavery, coercion, peer pressure, colonisation, culture through LiveShips, to the slam it in your face approach of Babel. One is masterful story telling, immersive, creative, fresh. The other was someone who should have written a uni paper instead of some pretend plot hole riddled fiasco. Yes Kuang can write well and knows about the history of words, but when it comes to characters, world-building, cohesive plot was a huge disappointment for me. I grew up in boarding school in the UK, Babel should have been a slam dunk for me :( Have you thought about Megan Lindholm (Hobbs other pen name). That’s how I first found Hobb. So glad you enjoyed LiveShips
@@heatherauton655 Thank you!! Hobb is an absolute legend and yes, I’ve got her other books lined up for once I finish Realm of the Elderlings!!
🥳🥳🥳. Solid month man! I put I who have never known men immediately on my list. It sounds really interesting and complex. I loved The Road so this seems on par. Ok so you must have missed something early on in The Spear of the Emperor 😂😂. Cause I knew she was a female pretty quick. Lol. No harm though, but thats pretty funny. The Heroes finally, yes! Top notch book! So immersive and insane! I absolutely LOVED the way Joe did some of the chapters where it goes through like 15 POVs, absolutely masterwork of imagery and pace. Hope you like Red Country and Age of Madness, although its definitely a bit more political, its extremely immersive and compelling. Ive read quite a bit this month. 14 books...which broke my 12 book streak. Probably helps I read a few shorter novels but still, some real bangers. Spear of the Emperor obviously was amazing. LotR I finished and it was a great time. I see why its a fan classic favorite. Assassin's Apprentice was a solid entry into the Farseer trilogy, book 2 just came in and im excited to get to it later in the year. Fatemarked was an indie read that was a good time, interesting world, characters i definitely want to read the next book. Shields in Shadows - solid piece, excited for book 2. Classic sword and board special unit dynamic. It was a bit slow in the beginning, but ramps up and ends with the foot down on the pedal. Empire of the Vampire - after discussing it with my buddies (who both didnt like it) and hearing their problems with it, i did downgrade my rating to a 6/10. I still enjoyed it, im invested in the story and I start Empire of the Damned tomorrow! Low ratings - The Book of Elsewhere, terrible. Dont waste your time. It had a solid concept, but utterly failed in its delivery. And Out of the Silent planet while an interesting concept was extrmely too on the nose about pushing religion and stating it's the most important thing in order to live a true and fulfilling life. Way to pushy, could have been just a great sci-fi otherwise. Im currently reading Godclads - The Broken Cage. This is a royal road finished series now being made to physical books. Easily one of the most interesting and wild and imaginative books ive ever read. Its also extremely violent and dark, but its such a unique premise and world that im utterly sucked in.
@@Dugrath I’m just going to ignore that paragraph about EotV and pretend we are still friends… 😅 I Who Have Never Known Men was so great, definitely will need your thoughts on that when you get to it. @@theangryjeff That’s a very good January Red Rising is just so good aye!! Will you continue with Bound and the Broken through Feb?
@@SpacedOutReadsI am thinking of going straight through them as the newest book comes out in March. I want to reread red rising already though 😂 Btw there are almost no wrong places to start in warhammer as long as you make sure it’s not in the middle of like a trilogy or something
@@theangryjeff I can’t wait for that next Cahill book, I’m very excited for it!!
I think you're going to love the Age of Madness trilogy when you get there. I'm excited to dive into Liveship. Read the first trilogy last year and wanted a gap between the Elderlings trilogies. My January reads: 1) Wind and Truth - Major disappointment :( 2) God Emperor of Dune - Wow that was the weirdest book I've ever read, but I kinda loved it for some reason? 3) The Dragonbone Chair - Really enjoyed it! Excited to read more. Tad Williams' writing makes even the slower scenes feel good.
I had the same reaction when I first read God Emperor. It’s my favorite Dune book!
@@obijuan-kenobi5117 I’m incredibly hyped for Age of Madness and all the Abercrombie to come!! I hope you have a great time with Live Ships, I’m glad you had two great books by two of the best authors to get the sour taste of Wind and Truth gone
@@theangryjeff Do you recommend God Emperor as a good point to stop or do you like the ones that come after? I should be on Children of Dune in a month or two
Tbh it’s a hard answer. I think most people who can handle a lot of weirdness and love dune should definitely at least read God Emperor. I count the original 6 books, but they do get a little strangely sexual after God Emperor. It makes more sense in context, but it’s still weird. I think it is supposed to give some horror vibes. That being said there is a character in the last two books that I love and it shows a lot of the bene Gesserit trying to recover and move forward.
@@theangryjeff You’ve definitely peaked my interest with those books now, they do sound weird, but even more interesting!!
Well this video has popped off. Nice one Dylan!
@@NevsBookChannel Thank you Nev!!

Sick video highlighting a bunch of the greats. I agree Malazan has a place in someone’s start of a journey into the genre! Cheers man!
@@Chance.Dillon Thank you so much Chance! You’re the man!!
The belgariad/mallorean is a fantastic series for someone trying to get into fantasy. Loved it, still go back and read through it today. Simple but great characters and story
@@alexanderlewis1705 Those books do sound absolutely fantastic
@ check them out! Fairly easy reads. At the rate you read, you’ll go through it in less than a week lol

@@Remington700FTW I need to train the Australian out of myself aye 😅😅
Oh absolutely, and don’t forget Children of Dune. I have been reading the whole trilogy lately for the second time in my life. They’re all great.
