The anodizing process is an extra cost and I don't think it's wrong to charge for it. I prefer to pay relative to what I get and if Apple have to make the same total profit from these keyboards, it would mean they would have to increase the price for the standard aluminum version to balance the total profit. BTW, I've personally been visiting an Apple supplier doing the anodizing of aluminum in the Shenzhen China area and it's quite an extra process not only with the anodizing and handling but also considering logistical extra cost. Apple is totally fair on this.

Now to find a way to put the M1 Mac Mini in the 2010 Mac Mini! Maybe with converting the DVD drive to USB internally, and then connecting/soldering it to the M1?

I found a 100e Lenovo Chromebook for $75 and really like the device: the ARM processor gives me 10+ hour battery life, it integrates well with my job's use of G-Suite, and excellent for writing documents and 1:1 video calls. The one place it doesn't meet my needs is for group calls. The Zoom web app has basic features I can get by with, but it doesn't let me see people's video while in share mode nor does it let me annotate, which is important for my adjunct side job. Still a great deal for what I got. Also good device to travel with because of the battery life and low value if it gets stolen. Mine included support for Android and Linux apps but the virtualization just slows it down dramatically so I disabled those options.

I have a 20 inch Apple iMac in my attic. Every 6 months or so, I fire up this excellent machine. Even though it’s now 20 years old, the OS still feels fresh and new. It’s a collectable now, but could still serve as a daily driver, It even served as my son’s computer in university.

iMac doesn't support bifurc, only one NVME will work per slot

Crazy to think that even in almost 2024 it still looks the same... this show it had a very good design for the future. But sad they killed the space grey version they had with the 2018 version tho...

While this was still somewhat interesting, the video was really just installing 10.14 on a 5,1 Mac Pro. No substantial upgrades. And definitely not “ultimate”

After I put in my Radeon RX 580 8GB PCIe I no longer get a boot screen. It does boot but I can no longer hold the option key to chose which drive to boot from. Can this be fixed?

Someone upgraded and sold me his Upgraded 4.1. All I had to do was install my metal compatible video card and Monterey I am stoked using this system.

that's not how graphics cards work. 8GB is amount of video ram on the card, not the core/clock speed of the card. in general more powerful cards will be pair with larger amout of vram, but there's definitely no 8-fold performance. maybe 1.5-2.5 depending on original card.

Good job! It's fun to do something like this once. There are easier ways to make money that's for sure. But like you said there is value is the fun and experience you get from doing something like this.

The dual processor Mac 5,1 don't give you much advantage over a single processor. Very few programs are written to utilize the second processor. In addition, the memory that you install in a dual core is set up so that each processor gets 50% of the installed memory so that if you install 32 gb of memory you only get to use 16 gb with your processor. I have two of the dual processor 5,1 Macs. Bottom line: unless you have a program that is written to use the second processor as well as the first you are better off getting the single processor. Your milage will vary and I have been wrong before so if I made a mistake please add a comment as a reply so everyone as well as me will know.

Very good tutorial! I'm concerned about the NVME Adapter card. That's a combo NVME, ASATA card? Is it possible to format a RAID 0 configuration using the two cards?

The SSD has SATA connection. SATA 2 to be exact. This limits the performance of the SSD to 200-250 Gbps. If you could connect the SSD via PCIe, the SSD would be much faster. However the NVME just blows away everything. Get a dual core tray and update the wifi and bluetooth card so you can use Airdrop and the unlock with Apple Watch features.

Apple recommends using a Sapphire PULSE rx580 8 GB graphics card in a 2010 or 2012 Mac Pro. Is there difference in compatibility between this card and a non-PULSE rx 580 card ?

Hi, nice first look review. I'm also considering Samsung TU87F for my MacBook Pro 13" and later by a M1 Mac. How is your experience working with Mini M1 and this monitor? Is M1 powerful enough to use GPU-intensive apps with scaled resolutions on this 32" 4K screen? My MacBook Pro 13" is not powerful to use more than "Like 2560x1440" scaled reolutions, it is too much for its Intel GPU, but M1 is much faster, hence my question :-)
