I learned a lot watching your upgrade your MAC, wish I would have seen this 5 days earlier would have saved a few sleepless nights. I wonder if you would know if I could duplicate all the upgrades you did on your MAC PRO 2010 if I could do the same on my MAC PRO 2008 (early 2008)? Perhaps I am asking you too much, if so my apologies. Perhaps the answer is an easy one, in that case, I would appreciate your advice. Thank you for the great lesons.
My suggestion: put 10TB server grade hdd and an ssd into dvd bay. Insert 4x2TB fast hdd into bays 1-4. Make them into soft Raid 0 - 8tb. It will have about 300-350 r/w speed. Partition 10TB to 2 and 8 TB. Use 2TB partition as TimeMachine. Use 8TB partition as a backup for 8tb raid 0 and sync it with FileSync. Use nvme as a scratch disk. If you don’t want to remove dvd, you can use 8TB instead of 10TB in bay 1 and 3x2TB disks if 6TB working drive suits you. Raid 0 build from 3 drives will be as fast as built from 4 drives (it just is). Now you have 6/8TB working drive with ssd speed that is backed up (raid 0 will fail eventually), a timemachine to restore system, an ssd for system and ultrafast drive for scratch disk.

that's not how graphics cards work. 8GB is amount of video ram on the card, not the core/clock speed of the card. in general more powerful cards will be pair with larger amout of vram, but there's definitely no 8-fold performance. maybe 1.5-2.5 depending on original card.
Thanks so much!! Yeah it was the same process as installing Mojave on the SSD in my prior video, however the install went way faster. It took about 15 - 20 mins as opposed to almost 40 when I installed it on the SSD. 😃
Awesome video! I live close to you. I had a 4,1 for a long time but i bricked it trying to upgrade to 5,1. How is real world performance of this thing for audio and video editing? Did you edit this on the mac pro? I'd love to try this project if i can find a bare bones machine around..
Thanks! What town do you live in then? Yeah we actually did use this Mac Pro to do a lot of editing for our other TH-cam channel where we do boardgame and Pokémon TCG reviews. Overall it worked really well with the amount of RAM it had and only the one quad core processor. We finally upgraded recently to a new M1 Mac mini to do editing on our other channel as well. Right now we just use it for video storage mainly and to run legacy apps on it. I would definitely recommend trying it out and making tour own. I’m still planning on doing a hex core upgrade soon to it as well. 😃.
@@LoveTech4U I am in the berkshires. I have a 2018 macbook pro and it's garbage. I miss my old tower but I know it's life is over. But I wouldn't mind setting one up as the main computer for this little barn studio I'm building. I occasionally see them around. So you switched the m1 just cause the tower was too slow?
Actually no. We switched to a M1 because Final Cut Pro was giving us some weird editing issues on the Mac Pro. I tried reinstalling FCP multiple times and it kept glitching out. But the hardware was not the issue. I think it was the fact that the Mac Pro didn’t support the latest FCP updates and started not working correctly because of a program bug in that specific version.
What happened to Part 3? I've been ready to do the upgrades you outlined here (great job, btw!). Apple recommends using a Sapphire PULSE rx580 8 GB graphics card in a 2010 or 2012 Mac Pro. Is there difference in compatibility between this card and a non-PULSE rx 580 card ?
Unfortunately no. The RX580 gets rid of the boot screen. I would recommend keeping one of your old graphics cards in case you need to get to the boot screen, you can unplug the 580 and temporarily put in the old one.
I can see more people buying these now Apple is killing Bootcamp. It's still perfect for playing older games in Windows on that 580 and doesn't cost much. Plus you can have OSX for everything else. The modern day equivalent new Mac Pro is around 6500!
Yes, these older Mac Pros are still really great computers even though they are about a decade old now. :) With a few upgrades they can really still handle a lot that you throw at them.
@@LoveTech4U it is supper simple. I recently did it. You have to look for mac pro specifically and i had to spend some extra time in getting my windows drive to recognize. But it is basically dragging some files. Then opening a config and changing 2 parameters if you want to have big sur. Otherwise you just have the bootscreen.
After I put in my Radeon RX 580 8GB PCIe I no longer get a boot screen. It does boot but I can no longer hold the option key to chose which drive to boot from. Can this be fixed?
tell me which adapter to buy to make RIDE 0 out of four 970EVO for Mac Pro 2009, flashed to 5.1. Mac os Mojave. I will always load OS from another Disk
You know whats funny, the Saphire 580 Apple says is compatible does not. I cannot get sound from my Monitors. In other words the HDMI & DP doesnt put out audio. I knew I should have went with the Nitro
I don't have any interest in "high performance" graphics cards (no gaming or whatever, doing strictly audio work on this machine). However, I would love to be able to run multiple large (say, three 27-inch) monitors or a single big ultrawide monitor on a Mac Pro 5,1. Do you have any suggestions? Also, do you know how/where I can find out whether or not High Sierra (the latest macOS that I can run my apps on) will take advantage of quad- hex- or 12-core CPU hardware?
I know you could buy a lesser NVIDA card that should be able to to handle that. I believe in my video description I put a link to all of the compatible ones Apple supports. So I would go after one of those if I were you. As for you other question, what app are you wanting to use?
Great detail video I have one question, since you have a x16 pcie adapter would you get a better performance installing the adapter in x16 slot 2 instead of slot 3 which is a x4? I’ve been doing some research and I’ve read how the x16 pcie adapters can give you a faster r/w boost in the second slot up to 6000mb/s but I’ve only seen where the pcie adapters would have multiple nvme blades installed to get the speed boost. I have not found any information where someone just use only one SSD on a x16 pcie adapter in slot 2.
So if I don't want to install Mojave and just want to use the NVME drive as a storage or time machine is that a good use for this? I just want to make my 2010 a little faster and some storage as well. Graphics I am not sure unless this is a good upgrade for running Music software, ie Protools.
One of your mistakes is that you put the NVMe PCI-e card in the wrong slot. You MUST put it in the 16x slot for full speed, that is, if you want over 2000 read write speeds. You are running at half speed.
That is incorrect. With the adaptor card he's using, that machine will never see over 1400-1500 for Write. That adaptor card is the bottleneck in this case with its using the PCIe 2.0 interface...NOT the slot itself. I've proved it on my own machine many times. Only with a card using its own PCIe 3.0 interface that supports a MB without bifurcation will you achieve Read/Write speeds of around 2450/2800 in a cMP. A SYBA card will give you this. Change the card to a Sonnet Fusion 4x4 card (which allows proper RAID) and you're talking maximum speeds closer to what you're talking about in a cMP...even higher speeds in a 2019 MP. Pricey, but worth it...at least to me. Now with both of these cards, they HAVE to be in the 16x slot. Good luck.
@@hangar4avs Good that someone picked up on this. I have two 12 Core Mac Pro 2010 running the Syba cards in both machines with two Sabrent NVME cards in each. One running High Sierra, the other Mojave. The NVME drive is also a SSD to be precise just a different format. The Sata connected SSD's max out at around 500 mb/s on a PCI card. The PCIE 3.0 in the Mac Pro maxs out at around 3000 mb/s theoretical. Mine do 2800. The raid suggestion is only good for storage. Apple unfortunately doesn't permit booting from RAID devices. Also I didn't see any mention of the firmware upgrade necessary for the Mac Pro 2010 to recognize the NVME which can be a bit tricky. Maybe it was in the first video which I didn't watch. I almost fell asleep watching this one. I would recommend more research before presenting such technical information....
@@DouglasDubler3 Perfect! But don't overthink this. No firmware changes need to be made in a 5,1 machine to recognize any NVMe. I've booted from them all day long without any thought given to it (and that includes the dubious EVO970 Plus). More to the point, I also don't know of anyone that actually uses an array to boot from. It's actually a waste. But anyone that is in video production work with today's high res formats, it is absolutely mandatory to run RAID with a Fusion card (for your scratch drive) for the best it can get in those old cMP's. THAT is where speeds are not only 'felt", but better utilized...not on an application/boot drive. There is absolutely no difference whatsoever in a single thread, old 12 core system by focusing on hotrodding the application drive for bragging rights. It's just impossible to have it perform in that regard like an M1 for example no matter what you throw at it (ask me how I know). No way Jose. Even with speedy storage drives with over the top specs, I've found there is a point of diminishing returns. But still, it's better money spent on your scratch, storage or whatever you wish to call it for sure...as long as you use the right hardware in a correct manner. Been there many times. Good luck!
@@hangar4avs I'm not overthinking it. If you are using an OS earlier than Mojave you have to install the Mojave firmware update which enables NVME recognition. Then if desired go back to High Sierra which is more stable for RIP printing. I'm a still photographer and one of X-Rite's Master Coloratti. For 25+ years I've helped them with software and hardware color management. Different field. This guy needs the good luck not me....
No problem 😀. I’m planning on doing a CPU upgrade video as well as a Windows 10 install video for the Mac Pro in the future as well! So stay tuned for those. 😀
Thanks for the suggestion. Over the past 2 months or so I’ve been working on getting my studio more “up to par” and also been working on NOT using auto focus because of the issues I was having. Also playing around with manual white balance (which I know has been an issue in the past for me as well).
Thank you for this video, I'm planning to upgrade my Mid 2010 Mac Pro too now. I've got 2 questions: is the NVMe Card being recognised under High Sierra? 2. Does anyone know a safe place where I can buy a Radeon RX 580 8GB?
I know the NVMe card is recognized by both Mojave and Catalina. Not sure about High Sierra. I would imagine it would be. I bought my card off of eBay. Just make sure you buy from a person with lots of good reviews is my advise.
Hi Rob- Sure thing! You can find the NVME care adapter here: ebay.to/2C8Lxib (it is the first result on this eBay search). The brand is MHQJRH The model is: 3 in 1 M.2 and mSATA SSD Adapter Card for M.2 NVME to PCIE Adapter,M.2 SATA SSD to SATA III Adapter,mSATA to SATA Adapter (with 2 Aluminum Heatsink) The performance has been wonderful so far! Definitely way faster and a HDD or SSD! Would highly recommend. If you look @34:20 Benchmark Comparisons (Before & After) in the video you can see the SSD vs. NVMe speed differences that I got.
I see other people say use AFPS when formatting the nvme for a mojave boot drive. You did macos extended (journaled). Is there an reason you chose that instead of AFPS?
I actually accidentally formatted it as Mac OS Extended Journaled and a bunch of people corrected me saying I should have formatted it as AFPS. However Mac OS Extended Journaled seems to work just fine with the NVMe. So I think either would be ok to do. But I would recommend AFPS.

The dual processor Mac 5,1 don't give you much advantage over a single processor. Very few programs are written to utilize the second processor. In addition, the memory that you install in a dual core is set up so that each processor gets 50% of the installed memory so that if you install 32 gb of memory you only get to use 16 gb with your processor. I have two of the dual processor 5,1 Macs. Bottom line: unless you have a program that is written to use the second processor as well as the first you are better off getting the single processor. I didn't see you upgrade the Power supply, I'm about to try the same, going by this vid I take it that I don't need to upgrade the that.
Correct, if you are putting an RX580 in you don't need to upgrade the power supply.
@@LoveTech4U thank you, for the next vid could you replace the tray with a 2 cpu tray and upgrade the cpus to something closer to one of the 6 core dual x5680, x5679, x5675
that's not how graphics cards work. 8GB is amount of video ram on the card, not the core/clock speed of the card.
in general more powerful cards will be pair with larger amout of vram, but there's definitely no 8-fold performance. maybe 1.5-2.5 depending on original card.
Great video. I would have liked to see you install Mojave on the NVME drive.
Thanks so much!! Yeah it was the same process as installing Mojave on the SSD in my prior video, however the install went way faster. It took about 15 - 20 mins as opposed to almost 40 when I installed it on the SSD. 😃
i have a duel xeon model absolutely love it to death
@@LoveTech4U I hate that about the tech industry. built in obsolescence
Do you intend to propose a part 3 on Mac Pro upgrade.

Yes. I am planning on doing a part 3 video in the next couple of months.
@@LoveTech4U Ooh subbed for that!
All great upgrades, just did about the same upgrade on my Dual quad core 5,1
Thanks! It was fun to upgrade. Stay tuned for part 3 in a few months.
What happened to Part 3? I've been ready to do the upgrades you outlined here (great job, btw!). It sounded like you were going to discuss some of the issues with dual booting and losing the boot screen due to the video card upgrade. I really want to understand the process before I add all these upgrades. Like you, I have also been keeping my CS6 apps alive on High Sierra but want to make sure that I can still access them easily after all the upgrades. Help! @@LoveTech4U
Apple recommends using a Sapphire PULSE rx580 8 GB graphics card in a 2010 or 2012 Mac Pro. Is there difference in compatibility between this card and a non-PULSE rx 580 card ?
With the video card upgrade, were you able to get the full boot screen?
Unfortunately no. The RX580 gets rid of the boot screen. I would recommend keeping one of your old graphics cards in case you need to get to the boot screen, you can unplug the 580 and temporarily put in the old one.
You can get the boot screen and hardware vid acceleration using OpenCore! I’m running Mojave and Win10
@@zionzamora170 Thanks for the info on that! I'll take a look into that in the future. :)
You can install opencore to have a bootscreen and install big sur on the mac pro
I’ll have to take a look into that. Thanks!!
I would keep the second one if it fits the bit so good one and the good one would be good good good

My Rx 580 8g DDR5 Sapphire Nitro Special Edition works perfectly on High Sierra and Mojave
I am really appreciated for your video.. It's a great job
Thanks so much! Part 3 will be coming in the next few months! So stay tuned for that. :)
Hi there. This Radeon RX 580 isn't the Pulse version Mac is recommends? Is there a big difference in performance between those to that you know?
Great detail video I have one question, since you have a x16 pcie adapter would you get a better performance installing the adapter in x16 slot 2 instead of slot 3 which is a x4? I’ve been doing some research and I’ve read how the x16 pcie adapters can give you a faster r/w boost in the second slot up to 6000mb/s but I’ve only seen where the pcie adapters would have multiple nvme blades installed to get the speed boost. I have not found any information where someone just use only one SSD on a x16 pcie adapter in slot 2.
Yes I believe so. I had another viewer mention the exact same thing to me. 😀
Can I install intell p4500 nvme ssd on a 2012 Mac Pro 12 cores high Siena
Potenziando l'hardware (CPU GPU RAM) e portarla al massimo, si riesce ad effettuare l'aggiornamento Ufficiale Software della Apple?
So if I don't want to install Mojave and just want to use the NVME drive as a storage or time machine is that a good use for this? I just want to make my 2010 a little faster and some storage as well. Graphics I am not sure unless this is a good upgrade for running Music software, ie Protools.
you makin part 3?
One of your mistakes is that you put the NVMe PCI-e card in the wrong slot. You MUST put it in the 16x slot for full speed, that is, if you want over 2000 read write speeds.
You are running at half speed.
Thanks for the info on this. I didn’t t realize that. 👍🏻

Just make sure you buy from a person with lots of good reviews is my advise.
well done young man!
Thank you!
Could you tell me the brand/model of the NVME card adapter? How has the performance of it been?
Hi Rob-
Sure thing! You can find the NVME care adapter here: ebay.to/2C8Lxib (it is the first result on this eBay search).
The brand is MHQJRH
The model is: 3 in 1 M.2 and mSATA SSD Adapter Card for M.2 NVME to PCIE Adapter,M.2 SATA SSD to SATA III Adapter,mSATA to SATA Adapter (with 2 Aluminum Heatsink)
The performance has been wonderful so far!

Some people don’t like the file system for AFPS, they chose the older over the new one.
Although nothing is wrong with Mac OS Extended Journaled, APFS was created to be SSD optimized.
Did you get the boot screen back on Mojave?
I only got it to work when I temporarily put the old graphics card back in.
So cool!!!
Thanks! I’m planning on making a part 3 video soon! Stay tuned! 😃
Could your Mac Pro still run Mojave if you removed the RX580 and reinstalled the original graphics card?
Yes. I actually got Catalina to work with the old card as well. Although the graphics are a bit unstable.

Your milage will vary and I have been wrong before so if I made a mistake please add a comment as a reply so everyone as well as me will know.
