I dust off an old shelf queen for some attention. I complete this Matchbox 1/72 scale Gloster Gladiator. Although I do run out enthusiasm by the end I do end up with a nice silver fighter for the collection.
I go bang up to date by looking back at last years Airfix Club bundle.

Yes. A year late and a correction, I mean the me419 not the 210! I hope that does not detract from the enjoyment of this featurette…

I’ve got a few of these new Humbrol paints and they are wonderful to use..Also they dry very hard and tough..I got some on my hand and I was amazed how much scrubbing I had to do to remove it..Humbrol makes great paints
Good vid, though I'm still at a loss on why many modellers don't paint some of the small detail parts on the sprue first before assembly.
In a situation like this I find masking and painting the invasion stripes generally better. P-51 Mustang decal stripes can be even harder to work with. 😮
I have used Humbrol products over 50 years and still do...I use other Spray paints, mostly Tamiya and Vallejo...I even use acrylic art paints to change spray paints to make colours I want...I think testing first to see how they mix and spray is key
I have always liked the Corsair and you have done a great job with this golden oldie. Thanks for the information on Telford, it seems a bit rich for me but there are loads of shows around the country and the Bolton show is very close to where I live and is one of the larger shows, I went last year and it was great, cheers.
The Airfix paints are really quite good. I have even had good results with the paint pots through an airbrush. Just need to get the consistency correct and add a bit of flow improver. I use a nail varnish shaker to ensure the paint is thoroughly mixed.
Lovely job on that Spitfire. I find that Humbrol paints are a bit hit and miss, some are on the thin side, whilst other are a bit thick and gloopy but they usually thin down okay, the best thing about them is that they are widely available and reasonably priced.
I think the reason for the pilot wearing modern flying gear is because the initial release of this PR.XIX was as an aircraft of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
That sounds plausible and makes sense 👍
Thats a beautiful kit and the main colour-way is stunning.
Not a fan of spitfires, prefer the Hurricane but I have built this model and used the PRU Blue paint by Humbrol. It brushes very well.
Good outcome, my attempt was a disaster. There were fit issues with the camera transparencies and the wing to fuselage joins. Once they had been rectified, I primed it, sprayed the PRU blue and decided to paint the invasion stripes. Despite using Tamiya tape to mask the stripes, when I removed them, all the paint and primer came off. The kit had been washed before painting and both primer and paint had been given plenty of time to dry, it was a little annoying.
Sometimes everything seems to go wrong, I feel your pain. I have to say I have never washed a kit and never had any issues with peeling paint. However it sounds like you had a difficult time with it so hopefully your next kit will be a better experience 👍
Beautiful spitfire ❤
Great build, lovely looking kit, spat my tea out when you said tiger stripes😂
Yeah, all I have to do is say what I see and I still arse that up 👍
Excellent job, everything looks great. Can't see why anyone complains about this kit. We would have killed for a Griffon Spit of this quality 20 years ago.
People like to moan and count rivets
I'll try the decal set trick because I often lose it with invasion stripes and end up painting them.
Very good sir! Paint looks good and my compliments on getting the invasion stripe decal to settle down and in place! Overall, a great piece of work!
Nice build of a beautiful looking and my favourite mark of Spitfire
Even the Luftwaffe used captured Gladiators as a training glider tug
@@g.cotter4256 good knowledge 👍👍
I have always found that the Games Workshop colour 'Mithril Silver' was a really good match for the aluminised silver dope used in the interwar years by the RAF.
There metallic/metal paints are excellent.
Cracking model, just one suggestion -do you not think that they would have recovered the tracks for the Honey?
Probably but I only built this combination because the tracks were missing in the kit.
What a great looking kit this is. I’ll retrieve my 1972 first edition from the stash and build it just to stir up Peter.😊
Beautiful model and nice build. The only problem I have with biplanes is that without rigging they look a little bit unfinished to me. Rigging in 1:72 scale is really painful but worth the effort in my opinion. Thanks for sharing the video.
@@sericono it will make an appearance later this year to be rigged 👍
Good wee kit, nice work
Super job and I think that I have one of these in the stash somewhere, I may hunt it out and build it, don't tell Peter. lol, cheers.
Revel....🤔 wondered why it wasn't in two colours!
@@nigelconnor6960 it was originally moulded in two greys, light and dark. The model is the video has already been primed in grey primer ready for painting.
I just did an inventory of my stash…….over the years I have accumulated 10 of the little beasties in 1/72 scale by various manufacturers. The Gladiator is probably my favorite AC…..my second fav is the Fiat CR-42. I want to do a super detailed build of Faith, Hope, or Charity…..Cheers
I have ordered one but mine will be different
Nice little aircraft I built one in BoB camo..I saw one in the Malta war museum Faith, Hope and Charity 3 of them defended the island before the Spits turned up....👍👍
gladiator was my first matchbox kit. I was 15 then. I remember buying humbrol silver and humbrol tube cement with the kit. I still have one untouched one in my stash. yours turned out to be beautiful.
I look forward to your videos, you have lit my enthusiasm for modelling again after a good 40 years, love the matchbox vids especially the ones with dioramas, cheers
I actually have this kit in a first edition version box with lid:-) I enjoyed your video and I`m going to try that Leadbelcher paint.
Gladiators in the pre-war silver dope finish with the individual squadron colours were, in my opinion, always the most attractive. Great job, once again 👍
Great perseverance shame you didn’t do the rigging
I lost a bit of enthusiasm for the build but it is sitting on my shelf looking at me so it may make a reappearance later this year. 👍
I am sorry but Airfix haven’t realised a 1/48 scale gladiator I wish they had though
You are correct, I thought I had seen one released a couple of years ago but it must have been their 1/72 version.
@ it would go nicely with the Lysander to be honest there are other companies who do a 1/48 Gladi Roden but the fit is awful I tired to build the Sea Gladi but I binned it and also I Love Kit do one but haven’t built it so I can’t comment
Yes that released a couple of new tooled variants @@creativetimewasting
Cela me rappelle ma jeunesse
I've built the Airfix, Heller and Hobby Boss kits, and each was an okay kit. I haven't found the Matchbox kit yet, as they are rare as frog's hair here in Florida, USA.
Shame about the Alclad mishap; it's difficult to keep track of how everything works or affects everything else with so many products on the market these days. She looks good though..... Nice one 👍🏻👏🏻👌🏻
It was my mistake which I have made in the past. A simple clean off of the dust would have saved a lot of time and would have kept my enthusiasm for the build going.
Love watching your channel….down to earth modelling…..on your paint issues….i,m a retired spray painter….a little help….if you paint sides first ,then when the overspray settles on the top surfaces you can removes gently with things called ,tack rags…..they can be used carefully on any painted surface though…..we would use them for base coat overspray which produced a similar problem . Hope this helps a little.
Great result.well done.👍👍👍
I NEED more Matchbox kits...BADLY
Great fan of Matchbox kits, bought many of these back in the day ( 70s) but will need a second mortgage to buy both these kits ( £28 and £15 starting price on ebay) 😢. Always liked the extras you get in the kits including bases, trees, bridges etc. You did a sterling job of the kits with your own twists which turned out brilliant.
Il primo modellino della Matchbox comprato tanti anni fa in un tabaccaio vicino casa, stupendo!!!!
What a superb job you have done on such an old kit...well done!!
Great Lysander build of an old Matchbox kit! Wonderful result!
Nice work. I'm putting together a North Africa set of toy soldiers for a youngster, he could do with a Lysander co-op aircraft and maybe a Storch. I'll investigate e-bay.
Good luck 👍
Absolutely love the way you weathered the vehicle, the dry bushing results were fantastic! I hope to recreate something similar on a panther i am building.
Good luck, I’m happy yo answer any questions you may have during your build 👍
You should contact Activision. You sound like soap McTavish off of call of duty. And I enjoy your builds
EBay bidding. I kept losing out on getting an Airfix Hampden. Every time I was sniped at the end. Then one week, three came up for sale so I put minimum bids on all three, not really caring at this point as I’d given up. They were in high demand! I thought I might win one. I won all three! Then the following month, Airfix rereleased it. 🤷🏻♂️
Sod’s Law 👍
I dissolve sprue in cement until it's a soup or stew then use that as a filler it brushes easily and uses capillary action to fill the gaps
I also use my distressed thinners where I used it to clean brushes as a weathering solution. As it had so many different enamel colours in the residue it seemed to work well
Good solution to a tricky problem 👍
But the old instructions were better than the current ones, it used to say " locate and cement part x to part y " then you moved to the next instruction, those were the days.usually a jelly baby figure.
I think that the transfers work well and are in keeping with a well used aircraft in the tropics.
