Noël Suisse – Louis-Claude Daquin // St Maximin Isnard
Born into a family of Italian origin, Louis-Claude Daquin (1694-1772) lived in France during the reign of Louis XIV, studied with Louis Marchand, and in 1739 was named organist of the Chapelle Royale. In 1755, he was also appointed organist at Notre-Dame Cathedral. The music for which he is now best known is the Nouveau Livre de Noëls, a collection of variations on traditional French Christmas songs, which were often performed during Christmas Masses.
One of the two texts commonly associated with this tune, _Il est un petit l’Ange_ is an old Swiss French carol, telling the story of a child who is visited by an angel with an invitation to come and see the baby Jesus, cold and poor with no chests of money befitting his station as King of Glory. The boy replies that he has nothing to offer a king, but he does have good manners and knows how to be polite and greet the baby’s parents correctly. He can also help wrap up the baby to keep him warm. There is more than a passing resemblance to _The Little Drummer Boy._
Daquin's Noëls are inextricably linked with the French Classical organ of which the Isnard organ in the Basilica of Mary Magdalene in St Maximin-le-Sainte Baume (which was sampled for Hauptwerk by Sonus Paradisi) is one of the finest examples, being almost unaltered since its construction in 1755.

Buxtehude's setting of the Lutheran choral _Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland_ is perhaps less well known than Bach's larger scale version from the Leipzig Chorales, which I have previously recorded for the channel. (th-cam.com/video/ViLxQ3fHAZg/w-d-xo.html) However, in its miniature form, it is every bit as beautiful. Buxtehude presents the melody in an embellished form with a dignified accompanime...
Buxtehude - Fuga in C BuxWV 174 // Noordbroek Schnitger

Born around 1637, Dietrich Buxtehude held the post of organist at the Marienkirche in Lübeck for the majority of his life and he was a seminal figure in the North German Organ School. The Fuga in C major BuxWV 174 (for manuals only) is known as his 'jig' fugue thanks to the compound time signature and spritely style. It seems highly plausible that it was known by J. S. Bach, who was a great adm...

Originally as a chorister and subsequently as assistant organist, Percy Whitlock was closely associated with Rochester Cathedral until the age of twenty-seven, when he became organist and choirmaster of St Stephen's Church in Bournemouth. Stanford's second set of Short Preludes and Postludes Op. 105 was published in 1908, just a year after the first set. The second piece in the set, a postlude, utilises fragments of Gibbon’s Song 22. The tune often acc...
Bach - Prelude & Fugue in C major BWV 545 // Velesovo Močnik
มุมมอง 6933 หลายเดือนก่อน
Youthful and exuberant, Bach's Prelude and Fugue in C major BWV 545 is most likely an early work from his time in Mühlhausen. Well-crafted and assured, the piece is an apt demonstration of the young Bach’s confidence. Its history is rather complex, appearing in another form in B flat but also in versions with two different slow movements inserted between the prelude and fugue. Played without th...

The Texan-born organist David Johnson was Professor of Music at Arizona State University for many years and evidently held great affection for trumpet tunes, having composed nine of them. Serious, somber and solid, Bach's setting of _Christ lag in Todesbanden_ BWV 625 from his _Orgelbüchlein_ captures in miniature the meaning of Easter.
