Prelude on 'Down Ampney' – Henry George Ley // Armley Schulze
The Cotswold village of Down Ampney was the birthplace of Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), whose father was the vicar of All Saints Church. In 1906, Vaughan Williams named his tune for the great Pentecost hymn, 'Come down, O love divine' after his birthplace.
Like Vaughan Williams, his near contemporary Henry George Ley (1887-1962) was the son of a clergyman and also born in the west of England. After serving as organist at Christ Church Cathedral, Ley was charge of chapel music at both Eton and Radley Colleges before his retirement in 1945. His setting of Vaughan Williams' tune is a simple one: the famous melody is framed by two identical passages and is first clearly stated in the tenor before Ley repeats it an octave higher. There is, perhaps, more than a passing resemblance to Vaughan Williams' beautiful prelude on 'Rhosymedre'.
The 'Harrison & Harrison' organ which Ley would have known at Christ Church Cathedral is not too dissimilar to the Schulze organ of St Bartholomew's Church in Armley, Leeds, which is a fine example of Victorian organ building. Like the Christ Church organ, it has a clarinet on the choir division, which sound glorious in the tenor register. Although not indicated in his suggested registration, I suspect that Ley may well have used the clarinet for the first solo, as I have in this performance.

Clément Loret - Prière (Douze Pièces pour Orgue) // Landau, St Maria
มุมมอง 430หลายเดือนก่อน
Belgian-born Clément Loret (1833 - 1909) is an organist and composer of the nineteenth century. Despite being less famous than many of his French contemporaries, Loret’s influence can be heard in the music of Gabriel Fauré and Eugène Gigout, who were both pupils of Loret at the Niedermeyer School in Paris. Taken from a collection of twelve pieces for organ, this delightful _Prière_ is full of c...
Stanford - At Easter-tide // Romsey Abbey
มุมมอง 195หลายเดือนก่อน
Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (30 September 1852 - 29 March 1924) is one of the giants of music in the Anglican Church. His choral and organ works are probably heard somewhere in the Anglican Communion almost daily. The Six Occasional Preludes are a later work, the third of which based upon an ancient Easter hymn. The chromaticism in this work is perhaps influenced by his studies in Leipzig, th...
Bach - Christ lag in Todesbanden BWV 625 // Noordbroek Schnitger
มุมมอง 2852 หลายเดือนก่อน
Serious, somber and solid, Bach's setting of _Christ lag in Todesbanden_ BWV 625 from his _Orgelbüchlein_ captures in miniature the meaning of Easter. Repetitive descending semiquavers perhaps depict the death of Jesus but an upbeat tempo portrays something of the glory of the resurrection. In just over a minute of music, Bach has perfectly captured the first verse of Luther's chorale, upon whi...

Hans Leo Hassler's melody from 1600 began life as a secular song but is now better known in its various chorale settings; _Herzlich tut mich verlangen_ and _O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden_ are two of the more famous examples. The melody, set in the Phrygian mode, has a long association with death and has been set by many composers from Bach to Brahms, and in more contemporary songs by the likes o...

The Six Organ Sonatas by Felix Mendelssohn are considered to be amongst the greatest works written for the organ. A skilled organist, Mendelssohn often visited the UK and it was here that he was commissioned to compose a "set of voluntaries", which were published in 1845. The third of the set, in A major, was completed shortly before his Violin Concerto in Bad Soden (near Frankfurt am Main) in ...

Oh, Pachelbel! He of Canon fame is much more than the one hit wonder much of the world considers him to be. Here he is, in perhaps one of the most somber of pieces, perfect for this Lenten season. A dark and despondent journey from one suspension to another. And it was Wagner who first claimed to suspend the key in the overture to Tristan! Pachelbel suggests two ways of playing this piece. The famous Fuge (or Fugue) à la Gigue BWV 577, better known as the 'Jig' Fugue is one of Johann Sebastian Bach's most famous pieces of organ music. • @MarcusReeves
      @MarcusReeves หลายเดือนก่อน

    • @RalphLooij
      @RalphLooij หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MarcusReeves Görlitz is more neobaroque with some romantic additions. I would place this Steinmeyer more between Dudelange (with its French romantic influences) and a Sauer/Walcker model (with its German romantic influences). Which makes it quite versatile.

    • @MarcusReeves
      @MarcusReeves หลายเดือนก่อน

      You’re not wrong but most Sauer-Walcker organs available for Hauptwerk are not in such resonant spaces, Annaberg perhaps one of the exceptions. Perhaps a comparison to that would have been better. The romantic touches at Görlitz (and the non-romantic ones too) such as the Fifaro and Onda Maris are beautiful nonetheless.

      Thanks, Tim! You should definitely learn it, it’s a great piece like all Mendelssohn.

    One of the best organs/models to present a Tierce en Taille. Well done, Marcus, it sounds very nice.

    Dumage is amazing. I play this entire suite. I hope you share more with us. Beautifully rendered and on the authentic sample set. ❤

    Clever use of the Unda maris, Marcus. Both on Bückeburg and Krzeszów (knowing that you have both), these stops are delightful. I'm glad you don't pay attention to the registration suggestions in your edition, because they are mostly awful and tasteless.

      Thanks, Ralph. I almost recorded this on Görlitz with the original Casparini Onda Maris but the 16’ tone was too prominent. Registration is an art and the suggestions are quite often best ignored, but that’s half the fun of being an organist!

    Very nice playing. A wonderful, somehow dark piece

    Certainly recommended to use this set in full, Marcus. A nice intimate interpretation of this beautiful Buxtehude chorale. I've played this organ about a year ago, I can definitely recommend mainly using the distant and rear channels. That really gives the image how it sounds on the church floor.

      How awesome to have played the real instrument! I’m seriously tempted… watch this space! And thank you for your kind words.

      Thanks, Jerry! It’s a fab instrument. The shoes? Old ones, I just felt like wearing them for a change!
