  • One of the greatest of Bach’s Advent chorale preludes, Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, is the first of the six transcriptions for organ from cantatas better known as the Schübler Chorales. Its origin is in the cantata of the same name (BWV 140) where the central movement is peformed by unison strings, the tenors, and continuo. Thus the trio-like texture is perfectly suited to the organ. The original cantata was written for the 27th Sunday after Trinity, Philip Nicolai's text anticipates the expectant theme of Advent. Falling before the penitential season of Advent, Bach permits himself to write in a livelier style hence its dance-like spirit.
I usually try to use a Hauptwerk instrument connected to a piece in some way. Other than being constructed seven years before Bach's death, I chose the Hinsz organ of the Bovenkerk in Kampen for no other reason than I wanted to! Despite the age of the this sampleset, I still think it sounds great and to me, still better than the recent version released for a competitor piece of software.

Wow, you have very much captured the Dutch style on this amazing Dutch organ! i have listened to this piece many times, as it was one of the first organ pieces that got me into playing the organ. This is one of the best performances as of yet: tempo, articulation and just amazing flow and ornamentation. I am flabbergasted!

@@iangarden1898 Indeed it does Ian, I am quite ‘picky’ when it comes to interpretations, even moreso of my own performances!

A beautiful rendition, Marcus. Although I've heard this piece so many times, as soon as I hear a good rendition, I'm always irritated about people who say Bach is mainly a theoritical composer. This piece shows (and of course the original cantata part) show how good he was in melodic writing.

Thanks very much, Ralph. And I completely agree: Bach was a terrific tunesmith able to transport the listener to a different dimension. Solo movements from the B minor Mass and his Passions spring immediately to mind, but there are many more examples of his melodic prowess too.
