Rheinberger - Cantilene from Organ Sonata No. 11 // Chemnitz Sauer

  • The works of Josef Rheinberger, a composer who was considered to be the equal of Brahms and Bruckner in his lifetime, were once widely performed but his twenty organ sonatas are almost all that remain known of his oeuvre today. A professor of the Munich Conservatoire and for many years organist of St Mark’s Church in the city, Rheinberger was a prolific composer in many genres. His Organ Sonata No.11 was composed in 1887; the second movement of this sonata, the Cantilene is one of his most popular pieces. A deeply romantic and sentimental movement, the pizzicato bass line, fluid chords and singing melody are reminiscent of the Air from Bach's Suite No. 3.
Rheinberger's conception of his ideal instrument seems to correspond with that of the great German organ builders of the late nineteenth century. The Sauer organ at the Lutherkirche in Chemnitz (sampled for Hauptwerk by Sonus Paradisi and used for this performance), although built after his death, is very much built along those lines; the specification not too far removed from that which Rheinberger created for the organ at Vaduz in his native Liechtenstein. Many organists use a tremulant in this movement but, for me, it sounds equally beautiful without which is just as well - this instrument has no tremulant!

This performance is like a magic that makes your mind peaceful.
The organ's deep, rich tone makes its elegance stand out.
It's a beautiful moment when time seems to have stopped, discovering a new impression every time you listen to it.

Thank you, Jerry. Rheinberger’s music might be considered a bit dull these days, but I enjoy playing it. I’m sure you will too!

You have this Rheinberger 'Cantilene' beautifully registered on the gorgeous Sauer organ sample set and your performance is just exquisite, Marcus: bravo! (In my teens at school, my organ teacher would play the Introduction and Passacaglia from Sonata 8, which has remained a favourite. When I began my journey as a 'pretend' composer a few years ago, the first piece I wrote was an 'Introduction and Passacaglia' as a Rheinberger homage and I dedicated it to my teacher . . . but if only I had 1% of his genius!)

I shall have to find the music for Sonata No. 8. I find Rheinberger’s music so approachable, although it can be quite dark and dramatic. You are no ‘pretend’ composer, Graham. I enjoy your works very much - your harmonic language is just great!

Thank you! The solo is played on the Rohrflute of the second division and the Bordun of the 1st. It’s almost impossible to not find a beautiful sound on this instrument!
