Buxtehude - Durch Adams Fall ist ganz verderbt BuxWV 183 // Groningen Martinikerk

The chorale preludes are among Buxtehude’s most characteristic works and are devoted to the main festivals of the Christian year, to Christian life, and to Lutheran theology. Of these, none is more important than the doctrine of justification by faith, which is expounded in Durch Adams Fall ist ganz verderbt. Buxtehude’s treatment of this chorale focuses on the first verse which deals with the original sin of Adam and Eve, and it is from this theme that Buxtehude draws the sorrowful affect of his setting, most noticeably in the chromatic countermelodies to the second and third lines of the chorale. He presents the chorale melody in the uppermost voice, employing very little coloratura passage work but rather concentrating on the main notes, filling in the gaps between them with expressive ornaments. As in most of his chorale preludes, the middle two voices are played on a separate manual, but in the first part of this piece he departs from his normal practice of casting the pedal in the role of continuo bass, preferring to engage it in the counterpoint of the upper voices or to let it drop out completely.
Arp Schnitger was a very active organ builder during Buxtehude's lifetime and his instruments are almost synonymous with music of North German composers at that time. Schnitger's organ for the Martinikerk in Groningen is one of his most famous instruments, and justifiably so with its soft voicing, beautiful tremulants and gorgeous acoustic.

Certainly recommended to use this set in full, Marcus. A nice intimate interpretation of this beautiful Buxtehude chorale.
I've played this organ about a year ago, I can definitely recommend mainly using the distant and rear channels. That really gives the image how it sounds on the church floor.
