  • Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (30 September 1852 - 29 March 1924) is one of the giants of music in the Anglican Church. His choral and organ works are probably heard somewhere in the Anglican Communion almost daily. The Six Occasional Preludes are a later work, the third of which based upon an ancient Easter hymn. The chromaticism in this work is perhaps influenced by his studies in Leipzig, the influences of Brahms and Wagner perhaps clear. It's thrilling music!
English organs are synonymous with the music of Stanford and the style of the (almost) unaltered Walker organ of Romsey Abbey (sampled for Hauptwerk by ‪@beautyinsound‬) is one which would have been very familiar to Stanford.

A magnificent performance, Marcus, and as you remark, Stanford's 'At Easter Tide' is particularly well suited to the splendid Romsey Abbey Walker Organ sample set: bravo!

A nice and triumphant piece, compliments for playing it on this relatively dry set (compared to the big English models). It gives a lot of insight and transparency in the recording of this piece. Well done, Marcus.

Thank you, Ralph. The organ at Romsey definitely leaves the player nowhere to hide!

Great playing, Marcus. CVS must have had a particular affection for this tune: I'm about to play his Prelude On an Easter Hymn, Op. 88, No. 4 in a recital, which is based on the same melody.

Thank you, Lyndon. I came across that prelude recently too, it looks good! I hope the recital goes well.
