This is better than woke tv today ❤
Most GB&W crews were friendly as well as the clerks who would tell you if a train was out there. Mechanics who knew their business kept that Alco power alive Sadly the car ferry made its last voyage and the paper industry is a shadow of what it was and that will also affect the railroads that served them so cherish the memory
👍
I love your entire series on the GBW.. please keep em coming!
Could you post the full videos of these?
Not sure what you mean by "full videos". Can you give more details? RR
A little Rustoleum could be used ....
Did Frank retire from the WC? Or what became of him after this excursion? Seemed like a wonderful person to know and work with!
Thank you for correctly noting "North Fond du Lac", instead of "Fond du Lac". North Fondy born and raised. :D
The Muhammad Ali of Locomotives
Except they didn't "Float like a butterfly". RR
Interesting, "Black beard" is a name I've not heard before for the patched MILW units. Never heard anyone refer to them as anything but Bandits.
A rose, by any other name, is still a rose. I've heard a few other terms to describe them, but I can't list them here. RR
Soo Line equipment and a wig wag…….whats not to like 👍👍
Indeed. The Van Dyne wig wag was the location for many incredible runbys. RR
Hi. Thanks for ALL GBW videos; I knew nothing of prior, and think I started first with the suggested (by YT algorithm?) rail fan excursion followed by watching all or most of the GBW series. Fun to follow along via aerial map perspective as well parachuting down to street view (where available) to see the changes from 92-93. I say it’s fun to follow along but at the same trying not to feel bad for all involved when following along and finding present day aerial imagery of the former WC and GBW yards in Green Bay that are now just grass and dirt, or the now missing depots along the route, or tracks removed etc-the fate of so many railroads. Did most employees lateral with the merger? Did the ALCO’s make the transition too? RIP Michael Geurts. I enjoyed the employee interviews. A new rr bridge over the Wisconsin River in Wisconsin Rapids was built to replace the old one as noted in one video. Is the huge paper mill on the west side of the bridge operational? It looks ginormous and sprawls north and south of that crossing but it appeared as tho just a couple of vehicles parked as per aerial imagery? Anyway, very interesting videos, many thanks, n best wishes. Cheers
Most, if not all GBW employees went to WC. The Alcos did not make the transition with one exception. RS27 #318 made on trip to Chicago in full GBW paint! I don't know the status of the paper mills. Thank for the comments! RR
8:08 Amtrak F40PH 375 is now Metra 216
This is probably 25 or 50 years ago i wasn’t alive
That sounds like the west Chicago diamond sound
The current diamonds are now trolley, or roll-over diamonds for the CN / EJ&E. The CPKC / Metra / Amtrak / WSOR trains are pretty much silent these days when the cross the "diamonds". RR
Given that the Great Lakes shipping season does not go all year, did the railroad haul ore year round, and if so, where did they haul it to?? Stockpiles in Escanaba??
Mostly for the stockpile. But there have been quite a few all-rail moves to Chicago and Gary, Indiana. The trains ran the CNW to Upton Jct, near Lake Bluff, IL where they got on the EJ&E for the rest of the trip. RR
An MP1500 in the 8th notch.... 2:27, my wet (an engr's) dream. LOL, I ran those "old" MP1500s. I could move 9000 tons, at about 4mph. LOL I miss those days on the main line in the 8th notch. MP1500s were/are very durable..... their Achilles's heel... a hard joint causing their/its radiator hose to lose its seal. Back in the day, I'm glad I knew the roundhouse foreman...I got to plead for (and receive) forgiveness. Now a days, I don't rely on freshly painted rebuilt garbage on 4 axles.... gimme a rusty, sweaty, beat up MP1500.
I remember seeing 5 and 6 unit lashups of MILW MP15s making break-in runs after being delivered. They moved right along! RR
Thanks for the memories. The spot between Blair and Whitehall where he pointed out and Amish family is where I grew up.
If you have any other videos of Ken Johnson, please upload them. He just passed away last year.
My grandpa Ken again. Thank you so much for uploading these!
I remember my grandpa Ken Johnson talking about Frank Fitzgerald. Thanks for uploading.
You're welcome. RR
Ken Johnson is my grandpa holy cow! ❤❤❤ he just passed away in October 2023. We had a special relationship. I really love seeing this. Thank you!
You're welcome. RR
I grew up watching GBW in Manawa! I remember when they asked me if I wanted to ride with them, when they were switching A. Storm & Sons plant! Wow!!! It took them awhile because they shipped may car loads every day! If I remember correctly the plant produced powered eggs! I left Wis. many years ago and was surprised to see these videos of the GBW being destroyed! I am a big rail fan and have a layout in my basement since I retired! I always wanted to be an engineer for the Union Pacific, so now I’m that engineer on my layout! Thanks for sharing these videos of Green Bay & Western
Those were great days when kids got cab rides from friendly crews. That is exactly what lead to a 41-year career in the RR industry for me. The GBW was a class act in so many ways! RR
The upstart Chicago commuter rail service provider Metra was formed in 1984 before it purchased the rail line between Chicago and Rondout in 1987.
Yesterday and today mark 31 years since this took place 😢
Hard to believe it's been so long. It seems like only yesterday. RR
The midwestern dialect is as strong as ever !
Ha hey dare, it's a Wisconsin road for sure. Doze people up dare a crazy don't ya know. RR
12 on 2 off !! Now i know why my father choose to stay on the yard board!
Eyyyy I live in Wisconsin
I remember taking the Chicago Northwestern from downtown Chicago to Wisconsin Dells, those old yellow & green passenger cars. Back in the mid 1970's.
I still find it amazing that Yellow and Green bilevels have disappeared from the Chicago commuter rail scene. RR
Thanks again for posting this video on TH-cam! I haven't seen this program since the early 90's when I was a young kid! Really brings back some good memories
You're welcome. We are happy that it is out there for people to enjoy. RR
The Packers score update over the radio was pretty funny 🤣
You simply cannot imagine the work and tireless research this team of historians had put into this legendary excursion, concluding a magnificent railroad! There are NO documentaries with this level of heart and soul for the subject, than these East End releases!
You know it brother! That's what makes us the best. And you are a big part of it. RR
@East End Productions Archive Do you have the full unedited video ride from end to end? If so, would there be a possibility of it being released? I would love to be able to view the whole length of the railroad. I grew up in Plover and was too young when I found out about the GBW in 1990, by then it would only be a couple of years left to its existence. I did happen to see the excursion train by chance as it headed back into Plover, I would always try to watch the train at the crossing down the road from where I grew up. Didn't have internet back then, so I didn't find out about the excursion train until years later. Thank you for posting all of these videos!
That is a good idea! I can't guarantee that we will make the end-to-end video available, but seeing the entire route without edits is a possibility. RR
Nice shot of the soo line locomotives
I remember the FRV track was awful at Tavil. Cool to see them, when I was on vacation.
Tavil was a slow-speed junction anyway. There was little need to keep the track in top condition. RR
Did I miss the year? Late 90s? I miss seeing freight trains on that line west of New London. It was such a neat stretch.
Fall of 1993.
@BadgerlandRailVideos actually 92, I looked up the packer-bear game they referred to. I didn't think it's been that long since trains ran through there. Damn
@@j26fremont The Green Bay Route web page refers to the Farewell Excursion having been in 1993, and mentions videographer Bill Cristopher by name (tried to link it but YT made my comment vanish). The game in question would be a 17-3 home win over the Bears on October 31.
0:52 on the right that's an old Griswold signal that once had the rotating stop sign, didn't know the GBW ever installed any of those!
Thanks for sharing this awesome piece of railroad history, well done indeed!
Thank you! RR
1. I was surprised to see another G.L.W. car joining the consist & with WC'S president ED BURKHART coming along. 2. Now I do love WC but I feel like they should've just left the GB&W alone. Business for them was going quite strong & their fleet of alco's still have a few more years of life left to continue doing what they do best. 3. I tried my best but couldn't find the spot at Amherst JCT where WC was planning to put in the NEW connection track between the two lines. I Knew their was another why you folks hold off on releasing your WC PASSENGER EXTRAS video back then, you probably wanted scenes from 1993 that could make it twice as successful with the mainline excursion debut of MLWR #261 as one of them which is quite understandable. 4. That EX-C&NW geep was acquired by WC with their purchasing of the short lived road name FOX RIVER VALLEY "FRV" railroad. 5. Consolidated Paper is a SUPERB customer in serving both GB&W & WC. In fact business for them has gotton that huge that they encountered a million dollar expansion project at their mill in 1992. As a result, the two railroads had to reroute their mainlines through Wisconsin Rapids thus eliminating the original diamond they had that was closes to the mill.
that is a beautiful horn
At some point in the future...the State of Wisconsin and the Federal Railroad Authority will regret tearing up all this track across the country. Rail will come back.
Indeed. A sad and true fact is that once a line is torn up, it is almost impossible to put it back in. RR
Never made the excursion. Still have great memories of this railroad and it's employees and friends!!!
Rest in Peace Green Bay & Western Railroad Sad the GBW at Plover Wisconsin is Abandoned and a Hiking Trail I think the CN Operates a Section of the Green Bay & Western Awesome Footage of the last GBW Train ❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the comments. RR
1:10 Picturesque shot right there.
Cab ride in a alco? Simply awesome.
Thanks. They are unique locomotives. RR
Amazing to see not many working with safety glasses... we were trained in the 80's about not having cast iron eyeballs. RIP Mike and many others on the GBW and CNW/FRVR in these wonderful historic productions. These are truly priceless. Hats off to the foresight of the people that produced these.
Times were different back then, for the better or worse. Mike's interview will always be one of the highlights of the program. We are deeply saddened by his passing. RR
Watching this is literally the best part of my day today…. :)
That's awesome! It is great to see comments like yours. RR
A great series you have shared with us! I love all of the stories shared during the trip from the cab of the locomotive! It is always great to hear an engineers perspective.
The cab conversations are pure gold. They will be even more valuable as time goes on. RR
Truly appreciate this excellent series of the GB&W farewell excursions. A fitting tribute to a first class operation!
Thank you. It is a great way to wrap up the GBW history. The cab conversations alone are pure gold. RR
what is Frank talking about with regard to the old road bed?
