Boy you guys were lucky to go for a ride along! This was before 9/11 and security became an issue everywhere. And the days before liability became such a factor. Those were the days!
The good old days indeed. The Trona management and employees were fantastic. They opened every door for us and without them, we couldn't have made the program what it is. RR
LOL At 6:36 when the jet buzzed the train it reminded me of a story a fighter pilot friend of mine when I was in the USAF who knew I liked trains I was a crew chief, by the way . So the story goes a Canadian AF pilot was flying over the prairies when he saw a train below him so he flew about 2 miles ahead of the train reversed course to just above the railroad tracks, lowered his landing gear to turn on his landing light and headed for the train Needless to say the train went to emergency, and as a pilot was flying by he did catch a glimpse of one of the crewman running down the side rails of the locomotive. Of course all names will remain anonymous, but I still thought it was hilarious.
This was the second time we got buzzed by military aircraft during the filming of Desert Dinosaurs. The first time happened as we were driving through Death Valley after dark on our way to Trona. There were three of us in the car and I was sitting in the back seat. It was a typical desert night with no other light sources visible other than the headlights illuminating the road. Suddenly I caught a brief view of light from out the window, followed immediately by two fighter jets blasting by at what seemed like feet above the car roof! Their Navigation lights and strobes were active as we watched them climb into the sky and quickly disappear from sight. I'm guessing that the brief light I saw was one of the navigation strobes. They were going so fast that I only got one flash of the strobe before they were on us! RR
I'm sure glad I found these Baldwin videos. I did not know anything about the Trona RR,so I missed watching in person these great locomotives. I understand the Arizona Railroad Museum in chandler has a AS 616 that they run on occasion. I love the deep chugging sound of a Baldwin.

9/11 wasn't the issue with the RRs, it was Chatsworth that slammed the door on this type of stuff.

A young man at work...
Zero ppe , I remember those days 🤔
Railroading was so much better in the pre-PPE era. Much more efficient before all the new and useless rules and FRA meddling. RR
