Excellent video.. what great memories and sights with the cab ride. I know it’s all about business but what the WC did to this railroad was nothing less than criminal
Thanks for the comments. Many believe that WC could have done things differently. The sad fact is that once trackage is ripped up, it is almost impossible to put it back in. RR
I am one of the few people who likes the smell of paper mills. It was one of the things I remember the most about Wisconsin railroads. Now a sugar beet refinery, on the other hand, produces the foulest stench I've ever experienced. RR
I went to UW-Green Bay from 2004 to 2008 and got my start in railfanning in that area. I used to chase the local that went out on the stub of the ex-GBW to the industrial park just past Highway 41. The Hudson St. diamond was long gone but that crossing on Military Ave. at 0:40 looked pretty much the same. 1:14 I see people were just as stupid in 1993. When I was on the scene the tracks still went through that crossing to the west end of Pamperin Park, but were used for car storage only west of the crossing. A friend and I took a walk down there, across the Duck Creek bridge (2:03). Five or so years later everything from EB (Packerland Drive) west was torn out.
@East End Productions Archive Do you have the full unedited video ride from end to end? If so, would there be a possibility of it being released? I would love to be able to view the whole length of the railroad. I grew up in Plover and was too young when I found out about the GBW in 1990, by then it would only be a couple of years left to its existence. I did happen to see the excursion train by chance as it headed back into Plover, I would always try to watch the train at the crossing down the road from where I grew up. Didn't have internet back then, so I didn't find out about the excursion train until years later. Thank you for posting all of these videos!
That is a good idea! I can't guarantee that we will make the end-to-end video available, but seeing the entire route without edits is a possibility. RR
Damn Shame the Wisconsin Central Didn't Keep the Whole GBW in Service from Green Bay to Winona Wisconsin And What Locomotives Would the GBW be using today If it was still Operating in 2024 ??? Awesome and Sad 😢 Footage of the last GBW Train with the Beautiful Red GBW Alcos Rest in Peace Green Bay & Western RR
We get a lot of comments about the GBW remaining independent in modern times. I believe they could have survived with the excellent customer service they provided. As for modern motive power, I think that the Alcos could still be running. Wisconsin doesn't have (not yet anyway) the ridiculous emissions requirements that states like California have implemented. Four axle power would certainly be preferred. RR
It is interesting speculation about an independent GBW in modern times. I agree that the Alcos would have survived a lot longer and possibly into the modern day. RR
I remember my grandpa Ken Johnson talking about Frank Fitzgerald. Thanks for uploading.
You're welcome. RR

Still love MILW. ROAD-- but these guys HAD TO be the best in the State of Wisconsin. The way they operated was second to none.
Customer service and customer minded employees were the key to success. I doubt CN is providing the level of service the GBW did. RR
Awesome stuff!!
Thank you! RR
The midwestern dialect is as strong as ever !
Ha hey dare, it's a Wisconsin road for sure. Doze people up dare a crazy don't ya know. RR

Yesterday and today mark 31 years since this took place 😢
Hard to believe it's been so long. It seems like only yesterday. RR

A damn shame GBW got absorbed. WC wasn't a bad outfit at all. It'd probably still been alco for another 10 years.
