From remote desert stations to ghost sites located in the middle of towns, we'll relive what it was like in Nevada those exciting days of 1860 - 1861. After watching you'll be able to gauge whether or not you'd like to attempt to find these stations yourself.

This is the place to learn interesting things about Reno, the state of Nevada and the American west! I've lived in Reno for 38 years (as an adult!). I've had a lifelong interest in history, and spend much time exploring and researching this wonderful area. I started this channel to share some of what I've learned. I produced a full-length documentary film on the history of Reno's Harolds Club casino in 2015.
Perhaps you're thinking of moving to Reno and are looking for background on the area, or you're already a resident and this content might help give you a sense of place. I shall endeavor to cater to both groups!
I'm also a craft beer enthusiast, and thought I'd talk about some of that scene here as well. I started homebrewing in 1992, and earned the Certified Cicerone designation in 2015 - this is a sommelier-like program for beer people.

I was on a solo motorcycle trip from San Carlos Ca. to Rapid City South Dakota. A 3.5 day trip on my bike. After passing through Salt Lake City I was exhausted and needed to find a camp site. I pulled off at the exit for Fort Bridger Wyoming. I pulled into a small Deli and gas station. As I was eating my sandwich a guy comes pulling up on a BMW motorcycle with ALL the gear. Full suit, metal boxes GPS completely covered in dust... I said "Long ride eh?" Yes he says..."I'm a History Professor for Yale University. I'm following the original route of the Pony Express" A long conversation ensued. AMAZING who you meet on a trip like that!
That would be a cool trip! I have wanted to follow the entire emigrant trail - one day!

Love this video. Wife and I retired to reno in 2013. We are both history buffs and always owned a 4x4 and did most of the trip you did on this video. Thank you for bringing this part of our history so that all people can see how this country was formed.

My husband's grandmother's uncle was Nicholas Wilson. He rode for the Pony Express in the Idaho-Wyoming area. He later became a law enforcement officer in western Wyoming. The town of Wilson Wyoming was named after him. His life was quite a story!

As a Reno resident, I have very much enjoyed all of your videos. I've been looking forward to your next one for a while, and am not disappointed!! This one is of particular interest to me, as my 3rd great-grandfather rode for the Pony Express, Elijah Nicholas Wilson, or Uncle Nick as most knew him. You included a photo of him at the end. My grandparents would tell stories about Uncle Nick in his old age. He began with the Pony Express riding in eastern Nevada and western Utah, but towards the end was transferred west and rode between Carson Sink and Fort Churchill. He wrote a book which I would encourage you to read, called The White Indian Boy, which is available on Amazon. He chronicles his life in that book, from emigrating west with his family, running away from home and living with a band of Western Shoshone and Chief Washakie for a couple years (he was only 12!), riding with the Pony Express, driving stage from Austin to Carson to Virginia City, and ultimately settling down and founding the town of Wilson, Wyoming where most of my family hails from. You missed one i found a pony express station in dayon on my dirtbike in a field when I was riding off trail. Had a rail with a plaque and a rock outline of the station. Out by James gaskets. Back in 2008 lol

We need some of the guys that made Fort Churchill to come to Florida and build some houses for us. Ours don't last that long. Of course, we have a lot more rain so they might have to clad the adobe but will let them do that. Watching these videos about Nevada California and Arizona reminds me sadly of the time I spent in school in Arizona while spending almost no time checking out the history of the area. I was a jazz major at Arizona State and my head was in the combo room! My wife and I did find an abandoned copper mine south of Tucson where we were able to pick up some cool wulfenite crystals on the ground. If I had been alone, I might have gone in:) and then I might not have come out:(and then my wife might have a :)
It was probably too hot to go out exploring anyways - LOL!

Thanks, Steve for another very interesting video. I too live in Reno and have been to the Sand Mountain station, Fort Churchill station and Genoa. I have friends in Dayton, but I never knew where to Pony Rxpress station was. Next time I visit them, I will drive by. The new owners there have a unique place to live. I just began watching some of your videos a few weeks ago and am now a subscriber. You go to a lot of effort to make these videos and I appreciate them all. I am always looking for information about local history.

I'm pretty fluent on the sections from Carson City to Mormon Emmigrant Trail/ Carson Road onto Pollock pines. Been riding all these sections, exploring, documented and worked on these. On A Bycycle..and im not done yet...
I've been further east along the old Lincoln Highway that follows the route from Utah.
You missed a pretty cool cave with pictographs kinda near hooten wells. Also missed salt spring wells and wild cat station between sand mountain and Carson sink. I guess wild cat wasn’t pony express but super cool ruins

Steve great story about the Black Bart story. However, I'm a little bummed out that you didn't show more of the trip up the old grade. That still photo of that wagon train on that extremely steep incline was impressive. Would of liked to of seen how it looks today. I'm a music, astronomy/astrophysics, true crime, history, and geography nerd. It's the geography nerd part of me that's bummed the other parts of me hold no offense or ill will towards you. Fantastic!! I just found this Chanel and subbed to you. The Guard that stopped you is a guard for the "Tire testing center" I always wondered why guards are needed for a Tire testing center. Also why is the Army stationed there? There is a lot of secrecy there. I live here in Yerington and have been to all the pony express stations. Have you done the cement Arrows yet?

I'm about to move, but I have spent most of my life in the Pony Express terminus, Sacramento.
Hi steve. Now that my wife is back from visiting relatives shes watching all your videos which got me thinking. We love going to old movie sights. We are fans of the old route 66 tv series 1960 to 64. Martin milner and george maharis. They did an episode in reno and virgina city and a young walter mathau was the guest star. They filmed at pipers opera house up in Vaginia city, the mapes and of course a fist fight at a lunch cafe somewhere on virginia ave. If you go to IMDB, S1,E22 you can check it out. Some real good scenes of 1960 reno. I could never get any info on where that diner was located. I know its gone but if you have time catch this episode and see what you can come up with. Maharis and mathau at the end duke it out in front of the mapes where the truckee bridge is. Let me know thank u

Did you go through diamond valley on your way to woodfords? There’s a reservation and some snow shoe Thompson landmarks out there
Snowshoe Thompson's cave is up the canyon to the west of Woodfords - I looked at that in my Gold Rush Ghost Road episode.
Kingsbury grade to Placerville was probably the easiest part of the trip.
I would like to be able to travel the entire old Kingsbury grade. It's a locked gate at the bottom. Something to figure out!

There used to be overlooks where you could park and hike down. I think it was before the second cutback. Only small sections still exist. Climbed down once. A favorite spot of mine was at the Ridge. One side the lake, the other Carson valley. The valley being lower than lake level is obvious.

I love Nevada, and have spent some time in Fallon, Carson City, and Genoa, (and of course Reno, Married my first mistake there on Pearl Harbor Day in 1968 LOL) so a lot of this looked familiar, and still beautiful! Another great video -- very well done. I'll just add one historical tidbit: Sacramento was the western terminus of the Pony Express until early 1861, when three more "optional" stops were added in the San Francisco area: Benicia, Martinez and Oakland. If the westbound rider arrived in Sacramento too late to transfer the mail to the ship that was sailing to deliver the mail to San Francisco, the rider would continue on to Benicia, then ferry to Martinez, then ride on to Oakland, from which the mail could be shipped over to San Francisco. The Oakland stop was the westernmost station, located in what is now the tourist area known as Jack London Square.
