Pro Tip for Better Blends| Blending wet on wet
Hi Paul, that looks like an ideal system for smart repairers the lamp isn't to big and bulky as some of the big ones out there are quite chunky plus as you said the price of them is just ridiculous, yours cures the primer in around 3 mins so with the size of the repair you did here what is the point of getting a £1k lamp just to maybe half the cure time🤷♂🤔 Personally I wouldn't go down the route of selling these £1k lamps Paul as you will then be competing with the big companies out there that chuck silly money into R&D so I don't think you would last long but I'm no expert mate, maybe there is something out there for around 300 to 400 pounds that you could sell if it gives a better cure time or improves the size of repair it will cure, there doesn't seem to be much out there in the mid price market, anyway mate a very interesting video👌👍
@JohnWD40TC02 thanks mate, I'm looking into possibly an inferred style a bit like the ones @oli_oli_paintz uses. I think that's probably where the best overlap between price and power is 👍
The ones that Joel uses are awesome but they must be up in the tens of thousands but they must do a smaller version🤔
@JohnWD40TC02 I'll have to put my r&d hat on and figure it out lol.
Just keep trucking and painting 🖌️😅 it's just paint 🎨.
That's the plan lol 👍
I've bought two of these for my small home workshop but can't seem to get the desired results. Seems to dump a load of air, compressor has to recharge a LOT. Not blaming the guns, I just can't get on with them it seems.
Try to find out what cfm your compressor is, you want have the same cfm or more that the spray gun requires. Also having a good size receiver tank helps. I.e 100l
Paul, your videos never fail to impress. Big thanks for the help with tinted clears! Loving the tinted clear coat tips. Thanks for the awesome guidance.
Thanks Powuse, I really appreciate it 👍
Nice! Question. I've always thought heating with a blow dryer or heat gun between coats would cause the paint to react negatively. Is this only a good practice with primer coats? Thanks!
Thanks, certain types of aerosol may react negatively. I'm only trying to apply a small amount of heat to dry it. I don't want to heat the panel too much.
Are you doing a drop coat? If so what pressure with that gun?
This paint is applied all in 1 visit exactly as you see in the video so it doesn't require a drop coat. But I use this gun at 26 psi if that helps
sometimes the adjuster button will make it worse Lol I been spraying ppg envirovase for a couple years and the color matching is ass !!!!
@ScottSmead3 lol It sucks that there is no visual when you use the adjust button. I'm back on spies hecker now so colour matching isn't a problem anymore lol.
Bit of a random question hope u can help, What would you recommend if you came across mottle while using standox? I’ve been using standox for around a year now only had very slight mottle issue on a new door a few weeks ago on a silver. One big downside I find with standox is it doesn’t like to get re applied once it’s dried. I find it gets very gritty and the basecoat stands up if you try and apply more. Any tips on what you would do if it’s motley/patchy after it’s dried? Thanks
@AbcAbc-lg5zi great question, basically it's the distance to panel while applying the orientation coat. You have to be unusually far away. This also works well if any colour is giving you issues like 3 stage pearls or tinted clears looking a little odd. I'll leave the Standox video below, keep an eye his distance to the panel when doing the orientation coat. 👌 th-cam.com/video/bK9vl72JKtA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=v7hcHVCzF168iKxT
@@paulphillipspaintwork thanks I’ll keep that in mind. Sometimes tho I think it looks ok then once it’s dried I’m like oh no looks a bit patchy lol that’s my main worry with standox you need to get it while the base coats still wet. If something doesn’t look right after it’s dried and you decide to apply another coat it it doesn’t ever sit right 🤦♂️ apart from that it’s a brillaint paint system
@AbcAbc-lg5zi there is a way I re applied base by putting a lot of wet bed over the base that has dried then mixed the base 2:1 with wet bed and applied that into the new wet bed. In this case I could see through my base. I have a video of me doing it. It's 11 mins in th-cam.com/video/wPd5oZHCjE0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=PNr-47Jkfy5rLUM6
@@AbcAbc-lg5zi maybe try in a test panel first.
Envirobase’s bread and butter is the chips, but PPG made huge improvements with their camera. The camera gets me a butt match all day with solids, but I always cross reference metallics with the chips or my spray outs. Their rating system is weird. Under 10 is allegedly a butt match.
A lot of people have said their chips are good, but this place never had the chips or made many spray outs, so I was left to pick from what visualise was offering. To be honest it gave me good solids too.
What happens if you don’t sand and paint it like that without primer
@ElizabethAnn-u4w great question, the paint will peel off. The 1st stone chip or time it's pressure washed. As soon as that paint is put under any kind if pressure or stress, it'll let go it has nothing to bond (hold) on to.
Do I have to sand it or can I just apply the primer ?
@ElizabethAnn-u4w that depends on what primer you have, sand it just to be safe. And I would probably sand that with p500 as well. That way you won't have issues down the road.
Also what tip are you using? I have a couple of the porphis guns . Pretty nice for the money . I’m a Sata guy normally
@@markpecoraro5290 1.3 for both.
@@markpecoraro5290 great for the money, I don't think you can beat it.
@@paulphillipspaintwork for sure . A lot cheaper than the Sata . Looks like there well made

@@paulphillipspaintwork I’m preety happy with them . I have the 715 ,716 . Both 1.3 . I’ve been painting for 27 years. In a dealership in Michigan
Great video Paul . Was wondering is that a porphis split tip spray gun ?
@markpecoraro5290 thanks, yes the split tip is epic. It's my favourite gun 🤘
your getting problems firstly your rushing it too wet too soon, wrong primr colour grey is terrible, drop some colour in the primer red or something to get it close, thats why you got coverage problems, plus the cap was black so that will be different, didnt you learn keep the under colour close to the sparyed colour. dear me poor aplication here mate.
You have some valid points, possibly to wet to soon but the rep didn't mention it to me when they were out to see how I was getting on, this would only cause dye back if it was the issue. The primer was the shade suggested on the computer for that colour, and water base paint and solvent don't mix so I cant tint the primer unless ppg have something that helps bind the two together that I don't know about as this is the first time using ppg. But no worries now as I have left this place and am back on the mighty Spies Hecker where know the system inside out.
@@paulphillipspaintwork Unfortunately I find some reps havent a clue, they do a demo or tell you stuff about a product but are parrot fashion just saying what they been told, experience here is key. Any heavy pearl of certain colours need specific primers to give better coverage, My golden rule is the colour of the under paint decides the match lots of people dont get good colour match but use wrong primer colours, you cant go wrong with tinting primers with a colour similar to the final colour. It defo helps to get the coverage on the tricky colours like pearls and reds yellows, also I know you might have a few cars to paint in a day but as the artist here its your call put a light coat on first always then sit back see what ite like before you hit it again. I always dry blend and I noticed you did the blend first using a to of material, I mask off the blending panels then make sure the repair is covered then remove the masking and on the final pass float thee blend into the door lightly you used so much paint on the blend in my opinion. hope you are happier in the new job.
hi mate hope you reply i'm looking at getting a compressor with xmas i'm currently looking at the parkerbrand 50L 9.3CFM [Around 5.6 FAD im guessing XD not stated] around £150 budget. Do you think this would be ok with something like the fastmover spray gun ? i'm only spraying small bits biggest part would be a whole rear quarter panel on a bmw e46 cheers
Whats the temperature in the booth??

Hello friend.... always top job from you....I have my own shop and after some people who worked on my place i realise that i am better alone..i am happier...Nobody do the job correct....Yes i am full tired because i have work for 3 painters and i do it all alone....prep and paint....this job needs the wright persons to make a good team but its very difficult.... Maybe i will take a young guy for work to help me and learn but this is difficult too because young people don't come to do this job.... Patience...the first 100 years is difficult 😂😂😂
@vasiliskaradimos yea I totally agree, there's not many skilled guys around and there aren't many appreciates coming into the trade either. Keep pushing tho.
Thanks for sharing, great technique on gun!

Hi Paul, absolutely loved the video there was so much info in here that most people should take something away and learned something from it or at least got some out there thinking about their work ethic which IMO is lacking in most industries🙄I've often thought about getting the 3M Accuspray gun but it's not something I need it's just something different in my collection🤔 I don't know the in's and out's of your place of work but it seems to me like the management should get on the shop floor a bit more to see just how things are done and the processes in place there, a good time in motion study would find the deadwood in the company to make it more productive, we had one done at my last place of work and there was some serious changes made where people weren't making the best use of their time, nothing was said to me as they seemed happy with what I was doing🤓😎 Anyway I'm running on again, I hope your new place is what you were looking for Paul👌🙏👍
@JohnWD40TC02 thanks mate, keep running with it, I love to hear your opinions, you know so many talented people round the world which gives you a unique perspective. 3m have some special editions acusprays coming soon. 🤐 I've seen them. 😀 honestly I'm not sure if you would get any value for what you do but it's definitely a cool idea for switching between colours quickly. But new guns are nice lol. My new place is really cool they are super relaxed as long as jobs are coming out of the ovens, and the numbers on the sheet for the day are good. 👌
Ok thanks Paul I'll keep a look out for the new 3M guns, you are right getting one is pretty pointless but so was the other 15 clear guns I own😅🤓but as you say it's always nice to get some new ones👌 It's great to hear you are doing ok at your new joint mate, lets hope it continues🙏👍
@JohnWD40TC02 lol I love new gun day lol. Yea I think I'll stay at thos place for a while. 👍
That stuff is amazing chrome paint!!!! Another awesome job!!!!

@sheldongilbert808 thanks I love painting cool stuff lol
I don’t think teams work. I always have worked as a team, by keeping track of hours, to keep it fair. Seems that on teams, there’s always someone who doesn’t play fair. Did you give them any notice, or do a silent quitting? I actually have not said anything, and just started loading tools during the work day, then tell them what and why I was loading my tools. I did this for similar reasons as what you experienced, except that the paint was decent.(RM) We had a guy that was the owners pet, who was a cry baby. He complained because I was painting circles around him, and USAA thought his work sucked. He thought I was making too much money, so they made us a team.
It sounds similar to the place I left. If I don't like what's going on I'll find someone else and leave. I have tried to talk to them about it in the past but nothing ever happens and they think I'm a trouble maker for raising the issue so I just leave. I do try to stay on top of my hours if I can but I always do my best. Like you say guys like us paint rings round people anyway so our hours should be OK.
I don’t think teams work. I always have worked as a team, by keeping track of hours, to keep it fair. Seems that on teams, there’s always someone who doesn’t play fair.
Agreed 👍🏻
Sounds like you are well rid of that place! There is nothing good about a team of people who aren't invested in making things better. It's down to HR to hire better more motivated people and then down to managers and culture to encourage doing well. This place looked dark and drab compared to your old place so hopefully you are in a better environment in all ways! I desperately need to learn to prep and paint ... would be some good video's in doing that to be fair!
@AllTorque I'd love to do some videos detailing prep, primer buy management in these places don't want cameras on the shoo floor, half of them don't allow you to take pictures of your work.
@@AllTorque sounds good. I look forward to hearing them 👍
Paul its, andy mate thought you left your job have you got something lined up mate hope so Paul do you know anything about heat curing lamps mate good video by the way thanks for sharing that very well explained 😊
@ANDY-we7mr I've started my new job, this is the last video from that place. Inferred lamps are pretty straight forward, and the paint your using will have Inferred info on it.

Hello Paul, Great video, mate. The purpose of a "foreman" in ANY industry is to give advice and provide help! In your case, it was about the paint product itself..... NOT on how to paint a car! Fairplay to you for moving on! I'd love to spend one week with you.... my skillset would increase by 200%!🤣🤣 Have a great day, mate, Steve 😎👍
@srodgie thanks Steve, yea it was a strange feeling to not fit in like but hey on to better things now. That would be cool, but honestly painting is mostly experience on the gun. And knowing how to fix stuff that goes wrong 👍
Nothing worse when you don't gel with the other painters
@@adampye905 totally agree if we spend 8-9 hrs together per day we have to get along
They should have got a demonstrator to show you how their products work
@richardbusby7141 I'm OK with the products. My issue was colour matching, the camera said it was a match and when you sprayed it, it was different. They had their camera replaced while I was there, and the rep came out a few times. Nothing changed tho. I asked how to get the best out of visualise but it wasn't much better.
Hi Paul, your spraying was perfect as always, and I'm glad that our product is in your hands for what it should be. ps: Good luck with your work on behalf of the porphis brand! Good people shine wherever they are!😉😉😉😉
@Porphis-Group thank you, I really appreciate that. Your spray guns are amazing and I will be buying more, I really want to try the PRD 627 vs type. Keep up the good work 👏 👏👏
We use ppg paint at work crap gone to dupoint bloody good paint
@MichaelNeiland to be completely honest I haven't heard many good things about ppg lol
Good luck at the new place brother!
@@sphdg thank you 👍
Ppg enviobase is definitely not a one coat system. All those chips in the cabinet are supposedly 2 coverage coats 1 drop coat. I call bull on that alittle bc some are 3 coats or 4. But all these transparent colors are not 1 coat. In my computer system 493 doesn't say one visit modifier I think someone manually entered that. Even in p sheets I don't see anything about it calling it a one visit modifier does that color call for g5? Alos one more thing i got bit on a gm tinted clear ladt week bc i didnt seal my blend pannel and i unmaasked it didnt even look like i blendd it.
There were no colour chips at this shop, we were using the camera with the latest computer updates. The one visit modifier is T4900 there are videos about it on TH-cam. The grey shade on the car is the shade the computer suggested for the colour we were applying. Also I don't understand why I would seal anything as the correct primer shade was applied, it's just adding an extra step for no reason. In the UK we only put sealer on new panels. I have never seen anyone seal over primer?
do you use a DIN cup to measure viscosity for clear coat?
@lutra7670 never lol. It was more of a thing at college but now we just follow the mixing ratio and is always good enough.
Glad you found a better shop. Have to find the easiest paint to use for production work. I just put up a short on a trouble color I have. The fender in it we had painted and the camera still picked the wrong variant when I painted it again. I'm hourly so I can waste time doing sprayouts, the paint we use is less than half of axalta cromax pro. I demo'd it.
@glen4407 The paint can make colour matching better or worse. The reason I sing the praises of spies hecker and standox is the camera is really accurate, if it tells you it's good then it's good and I can trust it. Just saw your short. There are quite a lot of variants. Those last 3 looked much closer than the first 3
@@paulphillipspaintwork I always joke that the beep when the camera is done should say good luck. The paint rep just tells me I need to learn how to pick the right one. I use the one it says is the best. Global match is never good. I just wish they made color decks.
@glen4407 lol everyone said to me "just pick what you think is best" the problem was I didn't have time to make a spray out prior to painting so I didn't have a starting point. I.e it needs to be redder or bluer ect.
Hi Paul, superb video and for me the voiceover from the top of your head is far better than a scripted one as you tell us what's going on and what you are doing at that point in time👌 I think you did the right thing getting out of that place, yeah the paint system didn't suit your painting style but there was more to it than that, at some places there seems to be a lot of bickering and backbiting going on which to me is just down right childish as these people should be professional adults so why not act like it 🤷♂all of this just makes for an unhappy working environment so I think the people loosing out here is the company👍 I hope your new place works out for you, we know the paint system is ok so lets hope the workforce is just as good🙏👍
@JohnWD40TC02 thanks mate, yea it's a shame. It wasn't a bad place, but you would the we would all work together for the good of the team, but there was none of that there. I enjoy doing the voice overs that way but sometimes I forget that some people may be new to the channel and might be wanting to learn and I'm just rambling on about something else lol.
Good job Paul, I have just done that Vauxhall/ Peugeot 3 stage blue the other day in max Meyer and I found the mid stage came out a bit patchy, I think skinny almost wet coats like you done is the way to go, slower and loading on it seems to make it patchy Still not a fan of base mid stages though especially without a modifier it’s a lot of layers to dry and can dry back Hope you find somewhere good in the near future it’s the trouble I have when I tried to find places it’s all about the people in there
@JonathanCox94 thanks mate, I really appreciate that. I have found a good place, close to home and everyone is really friendly. Which is a massive plus. I prefer the tinted clear coat version of these colours. I completely get what you are saying. If you have to put a lot of base on like that, it's probably worth baking for 10 -15 mins before applying clear coat to try and avoid dye back. 👍
One of the main issues you had here is you should have put down the correct grey shade basecoat down first over the primer. This would have given a feathered edge not the harsh edge of the primer. It is another process and material but will give easier coverage in low coverage colours in PPG.
@robborobbo8174 who ever was priming the car had the responsibility to camera the car and then use the grey shade that was suggested so it should always be the correct grey shade. But I have heard guys the the gunman complaining that ppg doesn't always give the correct grey shade.
@@paulphillipspaintwork I'll agree with both of you here. I'll either use a spectral gray sealer or base coat first. But I have been burned on a PPG ground coat recommendation. It was a complete 67 Mustang. They suggested a number 6 on a red pearl which took a third coat for coverage. If I had used a number 5 or 4 probably two coats amd done.
@class5bodyworks I've heard quite a few people have been caught out by the ppg grey shade suggestion.
In every company you'll get the know it all that knows nothing, I'm a welder and had a carpenter telling me how to do my job, the worst bit was he continued to send me dimensions to work to, and when the work came out the wrong size blame me for it being wrong, but when measured and presented with HIS dimensions on paper I got released from my duties for calling him out in the workshop haha Better off working in a place that appreciates your skill levels and experience.
@sbr1160 that's bull sh*t man you don't need that at work. I always joke "what do I know, I've only been doing it for 20 years." And I do asked other people's opinions and for help if I need it. But sometimes they know best 🤣 I did get advice from a painter once who said "if they tell you to do something a certain way and you know it's wrong, just do it because it's their mistake. If you then do it your way and there is an issue for whatever reason it's your falt for not listening, so put the responsibility on them"
@@paulphillipspaintwork That painters advice was spot on, the reason I got laid off was the stupid carpenter was good friends of the boss, the boss even knew he was in the wrong haha so better of our and sane than in a job and ready to cause physical harm to a tosser.
@@sbr1160 🤣 did you find somewhere better to go? Things like that are usually a blessing in disguise
@@paulphillipspaintwork yeah opened a vape shop in Belgium, at that point I'd had enough of working as a welder in the UK thanks to Tom the twat haha
@sbr1160 that's awesome 👏👏👏 congratulations. I kinda want out of the trade, I started PainTeX selling paint products to painters using my knowledge of the trade. I'm not sure I can work for people lol. I've had enough bad bosses lol
That hood (bonnet) should have been blended as well..... I know for a fact that it dodnt match...... Good for you for walking away from that shop. I walk away too when they just dont get it....... BLEND IT & SEND IT !!!!
@thistledewoutdoors3331 yea I totally agree mate sometimes you have to walk away.
Slower is faster in the paint world.....
@@thistledewoutdoors3331 totally agree
PPG is a 3 coat paint !!!! Spies hecker has the 1.5 coat system but it sometimes requires 2+..........
@thistledewoutdoors3331 yea I agree but 98% of spies hecker colours aren't an issue so in faster paint environments it allows the painter to just get on woth what he need sto do. 👍
1 and a half my a$$. It's a scam to get companies to use there crap. It's so thick it takes forever to dry. I never used solvent and I would rather use that than the crap waterborne paint that's out there. I used ppg and we had cars in and out the door in no time. Trust me when you switch you will be begging for ppg
Did you spray over a sanded primer ??? Them edges look pretty solid and not transparent.... You can always spray a scratch coat of base over that primer or sealer for coverage and then go into your final color.....
@thistledewoutdoors3331 yes it was sanded primer, we don't tend to seal stuff much in the UK, but I can see a need for it with ppg lol.
This system looks headache i orefer tinted clear or the 3 stage but unfortunately with sikkens its no tinted clear.. i did a 46v soul red for the first time in the 3 stage bumper and wing blend and came out perfect match its not that difficult aslong as you cover your mid coat over the ground effectively. By the way one of our polisher just gets on with the polishing no dramas most jobs are clean and shiny but the other polisher crys about a few nibs and wants gun finish every single time lol as you were talking about the trizact part it made me laugh 😂
@BoundByHonor700 I like sikkens it's good stuff. But I am starting to worry about the industry the dinosaurs won't change and there isn't many people coming into the trade who want to learn. We all would like a perfect gun finish with no nibbs but it's just no realistic they do happen from time to time. I think you have been spoiling your polisher and he expects to much now lol
you cant beat axalta for speed and coverage this video proves this.as for dickhead management just move on your experience will be rewarded in a better shop.
Wonderful work thank you so much
@Ulr149tw21 no worries thanks for watching 👍
That place sounds like it wasn’t a good place to work. To many bosses.
@Ontheroadbrogymgo it was alright and if I give it enough time I'm sure I'd get the hang of ppg but nobody was really that helpful in there and that just compounded the problems.
