- In this video I talk about how to better your odds at having a successful fall food plot for whitetail deer hunting. Most food plotters plant fall food plots to attract and hold mature bucks during the fall and winter months, things like clovers, turnips, radishes, kale, cereal rye, winter wheat, oats are all common ingredients that do well in fall food plots. No till drill, no till broadcast, and full tillage are used by food plotters to raise their fall food plots. But how do we make sure they are successful???? Watch the video to find out.

No hurry here in SE Texas to put in fall food plots, usually plant in mid October, deer won’t touch plots till weather gets cold. Also oak trees loaded with acorns with all the rain this year we are at 50 inches for the year already, now hot and dry. Enjoy the videos! Keep them coming
Hey Ryan, I completely understand, same way here….weve had plentiful rains all year but just now staying to turn try. Was trimming shooting lanes yesterday and saw a red oak limb that got knocked off in a summer storm, it was loaded with acorns. I haven’t looked much at the white oaks yet….kinda scared to look after last year. Haha thanks for watching

Ok Plot Professor, remember to mention WHERE your plots are located also makes a huge difference this time of year...whether on ridges, bottoms, or good soils. Dry ridges are a disaster with little or no rain, but bottom ground and good fertile ground plots will come up and grow reasonably well with just light precip. So with that in mind, thanks again for the heads up and timely instruction.
No doubt there is a significant difference between bottom land and ridge soils water holding capacity. All of my fall plots except 1 are going on poor ridge top soils! Thanks for watching
@DIYfoodplotpro when would be a good time for brassicas in southwest tennessee, im new to food plots
60-90 days before your average first frost date is perfect for brassicas. They can be sown closer to the frost but bulb production will be less. Thanks for watching and good luck with the plots

Anytime in there will be fine. I typically start looking for planting windows at 90, then I’ll plant as weather distracts. Some years it’s 90 some is 75 and some it’s 60
With this crazy weather, having a good alfalfa stand sure takes the pressure off of the fall plots. Can always go in with rye and oats if I need to save season. Thanks for the info wes.
Yes sir rye oats and winter wheat are great save the day plots if Mother Nature doesn’t let the fall plots succeed! Alfalfa is wonderful to have around this time of the year, keeps the high protein food source going all the way till the frost. Thanks for watching and good luck with the plots!
Wes.....we don't have the luxury of planting solely depending on the weather, but in fact are solely dependent on the calendar due to my Grandson's busy work schedule. We disc, rototilled, broadcast, and then cultipacked last Thursday. Tonite we are expecting 1/2" plus of rain, and more in the next few days...roughly one week later. We sold our no-till drill this year as we did not have success with it. The soil was generally way to dry when we planted to get good seed to soil contact, or we had other issues. We went back to what we had great success with in the past of regular tillage. We are confident that our planting will be fine for our fall food plots. We no longer mess with spring green plantings other than corn and beans, the rest of the plots we mow and keep clean with the emergence of our fall plots from the previous year. We then burn them down chemically before our fall planting in late July or early August. We concentrate all summer in keeping them short and relatively clean in preparation on getting those plots of clovers, oats, chicory, brassicas, radishes etc. ready for the fall planting. Just our method, but we have had great success in attracting and harvesting mature bucks. Thanks Wes for all the information you provide, Bob SWWI

Where I live, I the north I can always count on August thunderstorms so I just plant when I see some in the forecast. This with tillage and rolling in the seeds.
That’s perfect! August is usually a very dry time here in western KY, it can make it very challenging to put in plots in a timely fashion! Thanks for watching and good luck with the plots!
I live in SE Michigan, but i work in Louisville, so I am a plant and pray kind of guy. Im heading north this weekend to put my fall seed down. The rest is in Mother Natures hands now.
I understand that completely!!! I have to do that some as well, usually I just have some backup seed to go with just in case I don’t get a good stand. Good luck with the plots and thanks for watching
I'm in Florida and broadcast my seed of oats, wheat, annual clover, turnips and radishes the day hurricane Debbie rolled in and got 6" of rain in 24 hours. Had 90% germination and the food plot is already over 6" tall. Hopefully we will get an 1" or so of rain every week for the next month.

I have a small camp near lake city. I thought the first of Aug a bit early for fall plot. I’m hoping for good rain event last week of Aug or first week of sept. I have so much work to do there. Storm took out trees now back to 100 heat index. Tough on old man. I neve4 in ten years had a really good food plot. Always something. I guess turkeys and birds like the seeds. Lol

Well, this actually answered another question I always had and that is why do plots fail but weeds always make it. Guess its all the seeds being at different depths in the soil as well as the variety of seeds. Does this sound right or are there other reasons?
Yep that’s exactly right, weed bank gets disturbed and as soon as you get a rain the weeds are off to the races, especially if the food plot is thin, that makes it even worse.

I think it's going to be around the 17th before we get any rain, im straight across from you in Menifee co and im patiently waiting to get my brassicas down
We’ve got some forecasted for this week, but it’s only 30-40% chances. Not sure if I’m going to plant or not this week. Going to watch the weather and make a call today or tomorrow
