- In this video I go over the summer release food plot system for feeding and aiding in hunting whitetail deer over the food plot. The release process has sparked many food plotters curiosity with, no fertilizer, easy, quick, and cheaper than most other food plots. I put the summer release system in the same field with my favorite food plot, standing corn that has been interseeded with brassicas, cereal grains and annual clovers.

It’s not working as well as I had hoped. I visited the plot a couple days ago and the deer are working on the soybeans pretty hard….even around the sirens
I like your plan and have given a lot of thought too this in the past. Having 2 or three strips of different crops in each plot can work. For mixed seeds, I like to strip (screen) out the larger seeds which I spread first, then roll the plot. This gives me a little better depth on the seeds. Then I put the small seeds down and roll again. Makes it a lot harder for the squirrels, chipmunks, turkeys, and songbirds to take your seed. My 2 cents. I plant 80% of my plots in south Alabama with the no-till summer and fall release system. It works as clamed. It keeps quality food available year round, suppresses weeds and reduces the need for fertilizer. I do add what the soil test calls for, but it without question has reduced the amount of fertilizer needed. I do though protect my fields which aren't more than an acre each with the solar electric fence due to high deer density with no ag around me. I've been doing it 3 years and plan to continue.
Keith, I can absolutely see how it would reduce your fertilizer bill, not having to add nitrogen is a big cost savers sounds like you have a good system in place for your area. Thanks for watching and good luck with the plots
Hey there Wes, great stuff as usual. Curious to know what HP your tractor is and or is required for that 6 row planter you use? Do you have a 'favorite' or preferred planter or drill based on size of plot and access etc? that might be a good video content and would def educate a 3 year rookie land mgr like me :)
Thanks Jay, appreciate the support! Tractor is a jx 80, approximately 85 horsepower and pulls the 6 row planter with ease. With front wheel assist I would feel very comfortable down to around 45 horsepower on ground like mine that is mainly flat! Thanks for the suggestions on video ideas! Thanks for watching
I wonder if you would have lightly dragged it, might have had better germ on the beans and sunflowers.
I’m sure it would have helped some, but the ground was absolute powder and given the rain that we got right after seeding the seeds should have sucked straight into the ground and had good seed to soil contact. Also important to note, it wasn’t extremely hot during that time, actually a very pleasant stretch of weather when this plot was planted.
can you post a pic of that utv sprayer pvc boom it looked like you had on that utv? that looks like it is perfect for windy days and distance from boom to ground.

Love your videos! I’ve been planting the release process for four years now in Kansas and Nebraska. My Kansas farm has 28 acres in 13 plots. It’s all on a section of land so they are reasonably close. Some plots look great some are so/so. It’s crazy how certain seeds go crazy in a few plots and no so much in other plots. No fertilizer and minimal spray used.

You are describing one of the benefits of a seed blend, some plants will do better in one area vs. another area, plant a diverse mix and cover all the bases

Thought I'd leave our experience here! This is our first year trying a blend very similar. May 1st planted 6 acres on ground that had been worked. May 6th no-tilled 6 acres into standing wheat/crimson and then rolled to terminate. Rain within 24 hours of planting each time! We do have high pressure and located just south of Murray. They have one-by-one wiped certain plants out starting with the soybeans, then the forage beans and buckwheat, then the sun flowers and cow peas! Not much left but Millo, millet and some rapeseed. I am interested in the food value here BUT highly intent on building soil quality. Now there are no legumes left to provide the much needed nitrogen for milo and millet. Will need a major rethink for next year!
Joey that is 100% what scares me about the mix, all the highly preferred stuff gets completely wiped out early and then we are left with less desirable food in the plot. Thanks for sharing your experience! Thanks for watching
@@DIYfoodplotpro what gets downplayed is that the "release" plots are fenced until the crop is well up and possibly beyond. Those plants cannot "build" the soil if they are eaten in the spout or seed stage. If one is in a high density area, the stuff will get mowed as quick as it emerges, with birds, BEFORE. It may have been better to just plant into the corn stubble than clear it out first.

William I wasn’t aware of the fencing needs for the release system….i appreciate you letting me know that. Yeah I was at the plot today, looked like some brassicas out there, a pile of grass scattered cowpeas and I didn’t see a single soybean, or sunflower. Thanks for watching
If you have deer cleaning up the plots that quick, i wouldn't be feeding them until closer to hunting season. If your building soil, go straight buckwheat and see if they will clean that up. Wish i had the deer problem you do. lol

The purpose of this system is eliminating fertilizer and herbicide. Give it a couple years to shine. Ive been using for a couple years and Im happy with the money and time savings.
It works if you put buckwheat in first crimp it, and drill into a Mulch layer, never seen it work well broadcast as that destroys the Mulch that protects the seed and prevents weeds.
Absolutely that’s 100% the purpose of the system….it should be interesting to see how it does in my neck of the woods. How has your hunting been over these plots in the fall months?
Caroll the reason I did it the way that I did, was most food plotters don’t have expensive no till drills and crimpers, my goal is to see what the average food plotters can get with this system without using the really expensive equipment. Thanks for watching
@@DIYfoodplotpro You can do it with a conventional seed drill if you cultipack over it after to close the Drill slots, otherwise the the broadcast seed is just food for the birds.
Drilled in it works good but I have found out I cam make my own science based blends way cheaper and drill them in and have way better success.
The Release system is mainly for people who want to go no till, my problem is lack of micronutrients in the soil that have to be artificial increased so the release system is not for me.
I am better off not worrying about maintaining a Mulch layer, mainly want to focus on weed control, and enhancing Micronutrients.
I want to try a no till soil building program. We have plots that were pine thickets so it needs a lot of work. What do you plant?

I broadcast a "game bird mix" with similar ingredients to yours into my clover plot with rye.
I first rolled over it with the mower deck down but not mowing to smush everything down and then mowed over it.
Been about two weeks now with ample moisture and I dont see any of it coming through the rye straw and clover.
Clover came back in full flower though 👍
Maybe the seeds you planted just need a little more time to make it through….clover is a fierce competitor thought so it may have shaded the stuff you planted out. Thanks for watching
I just planted whitetail institute power plant and it sounds like the same seed. it turns into good bedding in the fall so weeds not a problem, its not my main food source. Can't wait to see what u get.

I got zero Sunflowers last year with it too . Trying again this year with slightly diff plan spin on the summer release
Did you do full broadcast or drill? Since most black oil sunflowers aren’t grown for the seed, I suspect that germ rates could be lower….gonna do a germ test soon with some leftover black oil sunflower seeds and see what it comes up with. Thanks for watching
@@DIYfoodplotpro full broadcast . I plant on very uneven / pitched terrain on side of moutain. I would roll machines . So I am limited on what I can do . But I get it done 💪🏼

Looks like if you 're planting that for the deer to eat from the onset, its going to be a really brief success. But if you were wanting it to grow and mature, it'll most likely be a bust? That's the problem planting a plot of "deer salad" mixed with a hefty side of "grass". Appreciate the effort to enlighten and educate all of us--thanks Plot Professor!!

Happy dads day! If your not a dad, your dad is lol. Steve here in lake city fl. I did take last Monday and spent the day replanting food plots. Very little grew from early May planting, one tiny plot near bottom had some ,but it was lip high lol. Rain stayed south. Feet. But we only got one inch. Turkeys and deer love eating the seed. Lol. Will try again in late Aug. done for the summer more dollar mulch. Keep up the great videos

Summer rains definitely can make or break all food plots, we’ve had way above average rainfall all year but now we’re going into a dry period and crops are starting to stress! Fall plots are a great 2nd chance when mother nature doesn’t cooperate the first go around. Thanks for watching
I never had beans last more than a week lol. Tryed over seeding, the now thing that kinda works. Spray tall weeds and grasses. Then case beans into it. Deer might leave it alone a bit longer. I have pretty good luck with sweet potatoes. Deer love them and under good condition feed deer all summer. They vine and grow everywhere. Usually once planted keep comming back year after year in north fl
I have had Beans last all year, I plant Beans and Sun hemp, they seem to eat the Sunhemp more than the Beans.
@@carrollsanders9376 was it a big bean plot. Like an acre? Or more. Or maybe a fence untill beans got big? If they get 6-7 inches high your good. But can’t stop then from tiny beans
@@steved5023 I know I just drilled 5 acres of Soybeans sun hemp.
Steve if you can get the soybeans established they can’t Browse them down….but getting them established in small plots in high deer density areas can be an uphill battle. I’ve got an experiment going right now on some literally tiny plots with soybeans, hope to get that video out to yall in a few weeks! Thanks for watching
@@DIYfoodplotpro I drill Sunhemp first and Guard it, scare Crow and radio with recharge solar battery, then after the Sunhemp is up and they are eating on it, I cross drill in Soybeans. The Sun hemp takes a beating but I grows a foot a day, once established.
The same bacteria is used to Innoculate Soybeans and sun Hemp so Sun Hemp first helps to establish the bacteria in the ground super charging the growth of the young beans.
You planted it wrong your supposed to no till drill it into Rye or Buckwheat, after crimping it. It's designed to be a no till no Herbicide food plot, there is nothing you can spray on it to prevent weeds a Mulch is required to reduce weeds.
I have tried it, but, not a fan.
Cowpeas will improve the soil better followed in August by brassicas.
Yeah the reason I planted it like I did was because I feel like 98% of food plotters don’t have a no till drill or a crimper. So I wanted to see how this system worked for food plotters without that equipment. Should be a good opportunity to learn something, thanks for watching
I've drilled into rye, even used a crimper, and you'll still get weeds that will come up from the drill disturbance. There really just is not a way around using chemicals if you want a weed limited/free food plot. Mixing grasses and legumes adds a total other dimension to it as well. Virtually impossible to eliminate the weed seed bank unless you are surrounded by well maintained ag fields IMO. Looking forward to your results though.
@@Brandon-uo1rv That's why I like Timed drilling better then a crazy weed mix, I have a friend who calls all the Mixes 💩 in a Bag, and the release system is top of his 💩 list.
