The End of Shaving Austerity - 2024

@@dappershaves Thank you Jacques! Just saying things you have said, but in my own way :)
Hi Greg. Like you're saying it's nice to have some hair to shave off the next day 🙂 nice shave.
Thank you! It is at that!
Time to scrape the soap out of the tin then ball it up and repress back into the tin. Great razor and commentary. 👍
You're right. The soap needs to be redistributed. After that, It always lasts longer than you expect.
The main way to tell a lovely Filly series one , is the curved address on the tang , i own a really early one that is marginally smaller than the later full deeper blade 14's . Amazing razor's, i own a few Filarmonica's theres a magic 🎩 in them all .❤. How did you slice your upper right cheek , surely not with that gorgeous Filly ??? Lovely presentation 👏 and worthy input ! I never chase ultimate BBS , lovely technique Greg!
I have never sliced my upper right cheek. You're probably seeing age spots. I'm in my 70s after all. Could be a trick of my highly sophisticated lighting setup ;-)
I found a detailed write-up on the history of Filarmonicas. Pre-1950 won't have FABRICACION ESPAÑOLA / MADE IN SPAIN on the tang. Mine does not have this. Gen 1s also have the curved Jose Monserrat Pou on the tang. Mine has this. But, let's face it. They're just great razors. I have the 12 and 13 also.
@greggallant5058 but we all heal well at any age .....we are in the same age group 😁
Great talk on advanced shaving techniques…Lurkers, do pay attention. Sweet Filly. I wasted all my money on the “Rich Man’s Pre-Shave” so I could never afford those highfalutin S&V soaps. 😂 Talc is so underrated until you actually try it.
_I could never afford those highfalutin S&V soaps._ "I have more money than sense" - Jay Leno Jay Leno has a lot of money, but note that there's a way that statement can be true if one doesn't.
Fantastic insight on the things you have learned from sr. I have a slate that polishes a super keen edge. One silver steel razor with the final hone off that stone, is so keen it is intimidating to use. Each time I have shaved with it it has gotten me. But it is a straight edge and not smiling, which I am not as comfortable with as a smile. So as you said adapting my technique is just as important to develop, as with each edge and finish. Thank you for sharing and take care.
@@nonamebear1136 Thank you! I’m glad you found something useful in that.

First up in the front row. Beautiful razor, rare to find one in such lovely shape.
Thanks! Yes. It was a _very_ lucky eBay purchase.
Guess coming in 2nd is routine around here :( *sigh*
Nice video Greg, thank you. Would the correction of the chips and dinks be quicker to sort out on your synth? I find that you can do all that work quickly on a 1k by killing the edge repeatedly. Hone, kill, hone, kill... until the damage is no longer there in your scope and you have a fresh edge. Then go to your great looking ozuku to polish. Polishing the chips and holes seems labour intensive. Lovely looking razor too, I bet it gives a really smooth shave.
The edge was killed on a 1K at the start. A lot of material was removed in that effort. The kind of chipping I saw after the Mejiro you would probably not see at 1K refinement. In this video I'm sharpening based on the microscope and it has very high magnification. Chips that look large are only a few microns in size. That said, stones are just abrasives. There's more than one way to use them. If you have a process that works well for you, stay with it.
I am a big believer in documenting my edges. I use my phone. If you’re a stone junky and enjoy the testing process, it’s a must. Great shave Gregg. Looking forward to hour next one.

@@warrenstanford7240 That’s exciting! You will not be disappointed in your Koraat. I have a 14-2.0. Excellent razors! Ulrik is a terrific guy to work with.
Nice to see you again Greg. Nice razor. To me this razor sounds just like a Filarmonica 14. I would like to get one a River Razor one day. If you you are into good steel I would highly recommend a WoolfBlades razor. Damasteel is in my opinion perfect for straight razors. High carbon stainless less. If you hone them with jnat's you can even get exposed carbides. It's like shaving with a completely dull razor that still cuts really well.
@@jpo31 My River Razors 14 is patterned off of the Filarmónica 14. I asked Boris for this. He will make whatever you want. Being a lifelong knife guy, I’m aware of Damasteel. Many of Trevor’s razors are too exaggerated for my eye. I don’t want a razor that looks like a dragon, or that has a diamond in it. Mostly, I want an excellent design to shave with. I like the one that Jacques has, though. As for honing RWL 34, I would go with synthetics. I don’t consider synthetics inferior, and I want to eliminate the possibility of chromium carbide tear out.
@greggallant5058 I have 5 razors from WoolfBlades. Carbide tear out is not a problem. A jnat is not able to cut these carbides. However, this steel takes a really good jnat edge. The Shapton glass hr is able to cut these carbides really well. My Naniwa stones struggle to cut the carbides, and can be problematic. I think you need to compare the same steel and the same heat threat. I have some blades with synthetic edges and some with jnat edges. They are both really nice. I think I have the same microscope as you. So, I am able to see quite well what is going on with the steel.
_However, this steel takes a really good jnat edge._ I'm not surprised, really. The kasumi finish probably hides most abrasion inconsistencies and they would be at the micron level anyway. You have piqued my interest in a Damasteel razor. I guess I'll reach out to Trevor.
@greggallant5058 He is really easy to work with. You can even get a hardness level you want. Every blade is heat threated individually. I have one that is quite soft (below 60). This seems to hold the edge just as well as one at 65. The fracture toughness is really good with this steel. This is in my opinion one of the most important properties of a straight razors steel. This is where the French C135 steel is lacking.
@@jpo31 thanks very much for your help and for the info. I have two large razor projects going at the moment, but I will get this going next.
Yes, I keep track of days and hours of my shaves. It is, however, easy enough for me driving from place to place. I’m not really a truck driver. I’m a compulsive sr shaver driving a truck to my next shave. May be you could drop a link where you’re getting your Zenith boar brushes. Your brushes look a large as the Stirling I have. I have been wanting to get a River Razors razor. Boris makes fantastic razors; you can tell he has good attention to detail. But unfortunately I have to stay within the restoration razors price range. I get fortunate sometimes and have found some outstanding razors for very good prices. But the restoration is something I really enjoy. Bringing a tool back from the brink, to a useful and beautiful tool again. Working with metal is fascinating; so much to it. It is just like stones. wonderful to see the people’s pre-shave being incorporated into folks shaves. your experiment lasting longer than I initially thought, the slightly convex edge definitely helped IMO. best wishes
@@dappershaves Thank you Jacques. I often convex synthetic edges at the apex. I think it adds to comfort and helps with edge retention. Though I’ve tried it, I don’t think it is necessary on natural stones.
Hey Greg would you know where I may find the densely packed S shaped poly styrene packing peanut you show here? I purchased a combination one with both white and pink and that does work well, but was looking for this densely packed version you have shown in a few of your videos. Always enjoy coming back in watching your honing videos. Darcy
Hi Darcy - All of the packing peanuts I have were just packing material. I have full boxes of them. I have not looked for a supplier. Over the years I have put aside and saved whatever packing material I receive with the intent of reusing it. So it is just luck that I have all these packing peanuts.
Hi Greg. 31 shaves, no stropping. Interesting experiment. I'm 1., surprised to be honest and 2., happy that it actually works this way 🙂 Keep crackin out great content
Thank you! Obviously, I was surprised too :)
I’m not sure if it was part of your intent, but I think you have presented a nice visual aid and discussion on developing good shaving techniques. I think interested developing shavers could do well to take some notes. • Nice dedication to the experiment. Even though you sort of prepared the edge for testing stropping vs no stropping experiment, are you going to revert to your normal honing practice take up stropping again? 🤔 😂 • On the topic of DE vs Straight. One of my mentors once told me that learning to straight shave well has the side benefit of improving shaves with ALL of my other hardware, which I found to be true. I later proposed that safety razor equipment is more difficult to use than open edge tools, a concept rejected by many due to the greater time learning investment to acquire these skills. It is a position I still maintain to be true, because I can usually match shaving results using a DE or SE by dedicating enough practice to a particular combination of soap/razor/blade needed. Years back, I had acquired a vintage Gillette New - short comb (which I still don’t like) but used it exclusively for 30 days in an attempt to match the results of my straight shaves. I used repetitive practice that targets shave comfort first and effective hair cutting second. Today, I can go pick up almost any of my straights and easily get a great shave, yet sometimes I need some repetitive work to match my best results with other stuff. So for me, straight razors are easier than safety razors. ----- Thanks for sharing your work and experiences, keep it up.
@@billm.2677 Hi Bill - Thank you for the kind words. My intention is only to describe my technique; what I do and why I do it. I’ll leave the shaving education to Jacques :) The edge I used was 10k with trailing edge, laps on linen to convex, then laps on 0.25 micron PDP followed by more finish stropping than I normally do. I’ve used this edge before, but done with 12k. Very comfortable. In the knife world it’s an appleseed edge, but it is a bit contrary in your world of concavity :) Once you’re comfortable with an open blade, the extra knowledge of edge feel makes safety razors easier to use. Because I’m more practiced with a straight, I tend to get better BBS coverage now, but I’ve had that in the past with safety razors.
Interesting experiment Greg. I think the primary wear we see here is from compression, which pushes the apex in. This will increases the width, and increase the required cutting force. When you add convexity you make the edge stronger, but it's also stiffer. This attracts more localised stress. A more flexible edge can work like a suspension on your car. It helps redistribute the force. So, a more flexible edge doesn't need to be less durable. It would be interesting if you did another 30 days with a concave bevel. I think you would be surprised. With your good technique I think you would actually do better.
Yes, it has definitely occurred to me that flex of a very thin edge geometry would act as a damper. But, its effectiveness will depend on the steel and a number of other factors as (I can tell) you already know. I have already compared one of my extremely keen edges on a full hollow TI to a convex-honed edge on another full hollow TI. For me (and that's IMO), there was no significant advantage to the concave edge. If there is a dampening effect of that thin geometry there's no reason it couldn't be a benefit derived from a small bevel angle created on flat stones. One could certainly make the case that the concave geometry is better in principle but this might also be a situation in which "better is the enemy of good enough" 😀
If you curve on the tip at the end of the stone you will go enlarge the curve of the heel! Why modify the curve if we can hone not curving?😮 i understand the point of view but there is no reason for this 😖😖
@@zenrazor659 I don’t really understand what you are trying to tell me. I have been sharpening on stones and shaping edges for a long time. Mostly doing it to meet customer needs. I test and inspect carefully to control quality. I guarantee my work and have had only a couple returns in 15 years. If you work differently and are happy with your results, there’s nothing wrong with that. The end result is what matters.
@@greggallant5058 I have no doubts your razors must be wonderful! But I used the same technique you used in the video! And every time the natural curve usually present in the tipe enlarged ruining the shape of the razor! Because I must presume there is a curve if you curve the razor on tip! Great on camera shaving debut! Does the fact that it's a stainless steel razor account for it having stayed comfortable for 21 shaves so far with no stropping?
@@avromcoodin3010 Thank you for the kind words! Yes, I think this stainless is pretty wear resistant. I did have a strategy in preparing the edge also. I’ll do another shave video for shave 31 where I talk about the whole experience.
Nice vid. Even though the test media is getting more difficult to come by, I use the exact same phone book method for knife evaluations. For me, afterwards the knife needs to effortlessly slice cut tomatoes and bread. I never committed the time to successfully freehand knives. Years back I got an EdgePro Apex. It is still my preferred method for sharpening MY knives. Compound beveling is not too hard when I choose it. One year for Christmas my brother bought me a Work Sharp Ken Onion. I will use it for the fast and easy on “the commoner’s” cutlery, but it aggressively removes steel and the edges don’t last as long. Leather stropping on knives is always “next level” finishing.
@@billm.2677You’re right about phone book paper. My inventory is almost gone. I have stacks of old catalogs to use, but the paper isn’t as good. I mostly use it for demonstration. I can generally feel the condition of the edge with my fingers these days.

Many folks see seasoned shave aficionados ‘racing along’ and flawlessly jumping through the diversity of their collections in hardware and software. In my experience, committing to the use of exactly the same gear repeatly as you are exemplifying is the ‘best teacher’ of ‘good shaving skills’. gorgeous Henckels Greg. Nice to see you shave and love your challenge. lower shave angle also reduces lateral stress on the edge which in turn increase edge longevity. best wishes
Thank you Jacques! _lower shave angle also reduces lateral stress on the edge which in turn increase edge longevity_ Exactly! On a well-honed razor the edge at the apex is quite thin. Stresses in that tiny volume are quite high and steel tends to be weaker in shear (lateral stress) than in compression (or tension which isn't applicable in this case).
