Ben's Classic Bodywork
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 20 ม.ค. 2022
Hi, I'm Ben and I have been restoring classic cars professionally for over 20 years, I'm sharing what I've learnt in that time on my channel to help others who would like to know. The main focus is fabrication but I did paint cars for a good decade and learnt a lot in that field too. Before going into the car restoration trade I trained as a mechanical engineer, this allows me to make tools for my job but as a hobby I design, build and fly experimental aircraft. This is covered on my other channel

The more accurate you can cut metal the better, I have a guillotine and I didn't realise how good it was to have perfectly straight cut material. On thicker material I can't use the guillotine and have to use the grinder, you realise how bad a job cutting free hand does. WOOOOOOWW !!!!! if I can only do 2% of what you have done, it will be a miracle!! I'm using all your videos to learn how to do something on my 1988 spider recovered from the woods! congratulations again!!
Thank you and I hope the videos help👍, the cars have a few design differences to most cars but are a quality made car overall. Strong sills for one thing which is very important for a convertible. What stage are you at ? How bad is your car ?
Hi brother, your VW bus roof repair video took me here. I'd be very interested on buying this tool from you if you plan to make any extras.
That's a great compliment, I would suspect that it would be too expensive for me to make one the same. Perhaps a cheaper method of construction could be more viable. At what price do you think the tool would sell ? My guess is £200 would be what someone would be wiling to pay. I already had the porta power hydraulic pump and the shrinking jaws. I think it took me about 10 hours to make on a manual mill. Cnc would be the way to get the price down.
@bensclassicbodywork you'd deserve the compliment man! That tool is neat, the easy access to different panels compared to those on the market with long handles makes it extremely desirable. You should patent your idea. I'll try to fabricate mine figuring out measurements by seeing your video. Wish me luck 🤣
@👍 I considered a patent before posting the video but thought I'll try my luck with possible big views. It hasn't worked out. 😆 Hey ho. If you need any more info with making one just ask. 👌
@@bensclassicbodywork thanks a million Ben. I'll need some advice from your side for sure. Do you have Instagram or Facebook page by any chance?
@ No probs, I do have a Facebook page called classic car body restoration. Don't think I can add a link to a TH-cam comment. It's not something I use or update a lot but if it's easier you could message through that. Email is the other option which is displayed in the about section.
Thanks for a fantastic video. Could/would you do a video on how you're sandblaster setup works. Compressor size (PSI) and so on?
@@stephenisaacs2296 👍 possibly could do a video on that, will have a think if I have enough to say/ know enough about it to make a video on it. Some basic info: psi at the compressor is 100, I don't know the nozzle pressure which is much more important. Nozzle pressure is measured with a gauge that has a needle on the end to push through the rubber blasting tube. I don't have one but need one, I also don't have a pressure regulator which could be used to reduce metal stretching. The compressor size is 120cfm and the nozzle size is 1/4" There are tables online to show how you select a nozzle size for the cfm compressor you have but a nozzle pressure gauge is the right way to get the most out of your setup. Just replying to this message is suggesting to me perhaps I should do a video 😆 Blasting Pot is an old hodge Clemco with a screw type metering valve, it works but there are newer designs that work better.
Best idea I've seen so far for cutting sheet metal that doesn't require fabricating a sled with rollers and an attachment that bolts to your grinder. This is far simpler.
Thanks for that, much appreciated. I use the cutting edge quite a lot and I love it. Need to make a smaller version too which would be better for shorter lengths.
@@bensclassicbodywork Yeah the tungsten is a good idea. I've been using steel tube and angle iron as cut rails / fence for cutting plywood for years. I have a dedicated 30" and 60" and also use a 1.5" x 1" x 96" tube for long cuts. For sheet metal though, I've used a bolt in the grinder with a small fabbed L attached to the bolt to press it up against the fence. (so you just pinch the L up against your angle iron or tube fence and help guide it as you cut). It works ok in a pinch only because I don't cut a lot of sheet metal. Cheers.
Good to see you again Ben. Very useful tool, Dave (Dave's Garage) got one sent to him, he liked it as well. All I can add is that a friend of mine got a couple of the cheaper ones off Amazon and ended up sending them back, they were just rubbish. I think it is one of those instances where you have to part with a few quid to get a good result.
Hi Bob, I'm afraid that's the case most of the time isn't it. Im guilty of doing that too, but I nearly always end up with the expensive version in the end, you get what you pay for most of the time. Yes I watched the one from Dave's Garage, his videos are very popular and he's a nice guy. I have commented on a few of his videos. There are a few car channels I keep an eye on, really out of interest to see how well they are doing on TH-cam. 😉 I sometimes find it hard to watch if they do something I would do differently. I expect the coach-builders would say the same about how I do things 😆 We've all got our own place within the spectrum of ability's and knowledge.
Looks like a great tool, very helpful for that type of inspection
@@DktheWelder I am very impressed with it. Thanks 😊
Awesome job, top quality work!
Thank you! 😊
Messi g about with retiring cars for over 40 years, and specialised in certain models, even so I get caught out, you don't give a worst case hours, as you want the work, and often previous repairs are well hidden, but badly done. It's just a part of the bingo rust game, one thing it's almost never less rust than you thought.
Exactly right, it's a tricky business, glad I'm not the only one who has this problem. I remember when I first started my estimates were way off. They are better but still pretty bad. 😆I do think the tool will help avoid massive mistakes, I'll certainly take it with me when pricing and make the most of it.
Well done mate, smoothly done! 👌
Good job folding it over, I'm currently working on a door that's very rusted out. Just stumbled across your video. Great help for me. New subscriber, im in the USA. USA. Thanks for the help.
Thanks for the message, glad the video is of some help. 👍
Why...? Just bought a rust free series 2 for $1000 usd These cars are plentiful for low prices.
$1000 would only buy the wheels in the uk but sometimes it's about the long term plan or the desire to save another classic car from being scrapped. This one was rusty but it had no accident damage through its life. Restoring classics rarely results in a good financial decision unless you are lucky, it's more about having or saving a car that you really want.
Another great video! Learned so much from you. Just curious, will there be any more updates on the e9 csl? 😊
Perfect 😊👍 yes definitely more on the E9 coming, that car is going to the same level so should be good for a video series like the Alfa.
@ fantastic news!😄
If not for the name, this would end up in the scrappy ☝️ I love Alfa Romeo....glad you taken this impossible tusk 👍👍👍
This was my first encounter with a Alfa spider, it was interesting learning about the cars and how they are put together. Sills are very strong which is something not all convertibles managed. Some English convertible cars I know will bend enough when jacked up to open doors. Alfa got it right and I suspect that's also why it has a good reputation for handling. Love the fact the engine came as standard with side draught carbs. I'm sure we will get to see the car finished.
That Horrendous Rust would have scared me off. Alfa’s are renowned for rusting then import them into England and you’ve amplified the rust issue 10 fold. Phenomenal job repairing those rusty areas.
Yeah it was certainly daunting, particularly when you've never worked on that type of car before. Certain design decisions were different to other cars which made it interesting.
Great project, I hope more projects like this follow. I adopted a lot of tips for my project, your videos are great and deserve a lot more viewers. Thanks from Germany
I hope to continue adding videos and I'm glad they are of use. There will be good projects going on to make videos from. It's hard to get views, a lot of competition on the subject I think. Of course the bigger the channel, the better the videos do, it just takes time to build up subscribers. Making the thumbnails and titles attractive without resorting to click bait is tricky. I find how the TH-cam algorithm works quite interesting. 🙂
You should be so so proud of yourself.
Cheers 👍😊
Better than new, Ben. I’m going to really, really miss watching your videos on this car, so I hope you have something similarly wonderful lined up to entertain us and keep you employed.
@@alastairwatson3201 That's so nice to hear that the videos of the Alfa were of so much interest. 😊 In terms of a huge project I've got the CSL BMW to get on with, that will be going to the same level as the Alfa. I've got a vw beetle which is also a big project. I've got a Porsche 944 coming in February, few bits of welding on that but isn't too bad and I've priced a triumph spitfire which is also a fairly big job. The usual classic vw camper vans as well with jobs going on. Nothing Alfa Romeo in the pipeline unfortunately but I hope to continue with the videos. All the feedback is really nice and the channel is quite good to have when you get approached by a new customer. You don't have to sell yourself, you can say if you want to know more about me and the work I do have a look at the videos. Can't get much better than video advertising I'd say.
@@bensclassicbodywork thumbs up on the VW Beetle - will be intrested to see that when the time comes. Great videos, by the way.

Superb, top draw craftsman, artist, comic...love your channel
really appreciate that! 😊
That's very impressive work. Is there a panel on the shell which wasn't replaced or repaired?!?!😮
No 😆. In all seriousness I can't actually think of one.
Jeepers, I scapped the same car about ten years ago, due to rust, it was much better than what you had to work with, excellent job, and a huge amount of work. Thanks for your videos and tips, been useful for me. One thing though, when I hung panels like you do, the wave about under the gun pressure, 2 bar, I have now made stands using shop shelving frames, and studded rods that can be position as need be. How you you hold the panel still ehen its hanging on hooks? Maybe I hold the gun a bit too near.
Sad to hear about the scrapped car but I suppose it was a little while back now and they can't all be kept. Glad the videos have been of use. Panels can sway about a bit when spraying depending on the weight of course. Small ones definitely do, I have used another hook hanging on the bottom before to prevent that. Either hanging a heavy weight or I just pull down with my other hand. Panel stands are good but I like being able to spray both sides at once. My gun pressure is always 40psi and I don't restrict the airflow, a large fan pattern does reduce the air velocity out the air cap.
Great job Ben. Liked the comment about the panel hooks, I was also painting a bonnet once and, of course on the final coat, it came un hooked....and landed on me. Messy business !😆
@@darrenhearn1365 Oh no! 😆 nightmare. It's such a lot of work to rectify.
Great overview Ben! Testament to what can be done when one is bone-headed enough ;-) ;-) Seriously, I didn't have that much to deal with when I did my Bertone. Great work.
It was a mission for sure, what was nice about it is that there wasn't any accident damage or loads of bad repairs. Usually there is a lifetime of repair patches to undo before restoration can begin. Not so with this car, it certainly was rusty though.
First class all the way! Wish I could drop my Alfa spider with you!
😊👍
Absolutely first class work Ben. I'm sure the owner will be very proud of that car for many years to come. You should also be proud of what you have achieved, there aren't many people capable of turning out that level of restoration.

Lovely comment, thank you 😊, really like Austria, holidayed there a couple times, the scenery is wonderful and would like to go back again. I noticed you keep the country very tidy something the young citizens of the uk need to learn.
Microblisters - Paint reaction - The wings need to be thorughly cleaned underneath and treated with wax or other rust preventative treatment after the metal repairs too.
@@MagicAyrtonforever I think it must have been micro-blisters. 👍 I painted, seam sealed and undersealed the repairs.
everything is fine. But why do you describe the dimensions in millimeters? After all, yours are inches.
@@maki.maki500istotakonieczna Mine are inches ? In the uk we usually have mixture of metric and imperial, a complete pain. When it comes to precision engineering I always use metric.
@@bensclassicbodywork I imagine that if 100 can be divided by 1 liter kilogram height of atmospheric pressure and in your system if I wanted a few liters of fuel plus one kilogram of luggage 1 m height One bar then I would have to calculate everything on separate principles so you must have an easier way of thinking it's strange that you don't protest

Oh boy... i feel for you
Nice work Ben, difficult to rust proof job's like these when they are above your head !
Yes it isn't simple to rust proof up there. Paint where you can and where you can't I did see a video by my mechanics insights where he injected paint via a hose. You can perhaps wax up there but you don't want the heat of the sun causing the wax to melt and drip on the interior. Also you can't wax where interior is to be bonded via contact adhesive. Tricky but it rusted so badly because the roof started to leak, it would normally only be exposed to condensation. Might try the Paint injection, will have a think.
Nice work! Looks like the main purpose of that internal guttering was to maximise rot and test your endurance 😬
Yeah, I think you're right 😃👍
