PVC/Wood Hybrid Bow
Needed a bow for archery tag really quick so I decided to make this, a hybrid PVC and wood bow. Shoots a 450 grain arrow at ~125fps and pulls 15# @29”. That makes this a 18 grains per pound speed test. Pretty fast for such a bow!

Elven inspired Takedown Penobscot style bow in Silence

I have a particular client that loves challenging me. This bow was inspired by a Pinterest post they saw and decided they needed one with their own flair on it. So I made this, a 40# @28" penobscot inspired take down bow. First time making a penobscot as well as a take down style bow. Putting them together was tough but turned out quite functional in the end. Biggest learned curve was figuring ...
African Wood Reflex Bow build

When making bows, the most common question I hear is, "Can I make a bow out of (insert random wood here)?" The answer I often give is, why not? In this video, I go over making a bow out of Padauk, a wood found in India, Indochina, the South Pacific, West Africa, and even southern Florida. This board had some bug holes in it but I was able to cut them out though those did make the bow need a bac...

When it comes to staves you have to wait to dry for solo long
Enough to neutralize a human being. Nice work. Saved tomy applied science library.
½" pvc??
Yup. .5” pvc pipe about 34” long before adding the siyahs
What type of scraper device are you using? Great video.
@@matthewmo8858, they are called cabinet scrappers. I got mine on Amazon for pretty cheap and they are great for getting a smooth removal of wood.
@@BowtellBows Gotcha. Yea looks handy. I use card scrapers often but this looked more efficient.
Amazing work. Tillering a hawthorn sappling right now. Lots of knots to work with.
Got to love those knotty staves. Make some very pretty character bows in the end. Good luck!
Pretty bow! I’d call it a PVC bow since the bending limbs are PVC
Agreed. Just like the wood to give it stability and make it prettier. I’d guess it would be a hybrid if it was PVC or wood backed so they are both in the working limb
Good stuff man 😎👍💯🔥🏹
Wow🙂 Loved this video and subscribed. 🙇🏻😎🏹
Great video. Just 1 question, how about directly boiling the wood? Would that works as well as steambending?
Read about it but never tried it. It won’t get as hot as steam so might not bend as well as a steamed wood would
Hermoso hé hecho tres long bow en madera de fresno ..el tuyo es muy parecido a uno mio, abrazo felicitaciones...
My in laws have a chainsaw mill for processing lumber. They have a nice stack of black ash slabs. I always wondered if it would make a good bow. At 12-15 a friend and I would make bows, arrows, axes, machetes, and throwing axes. Our stick bows were made from poplar. Being the late 90s and early 2000s we didn’t have TH-cam to help us. I never knew about using the heart wood or anything like that. We used trial and error. Our tools were what we had on hand. My draw knife was a bolo machete lol. Made arrows from fire hardened willows. We used canada goose or turkey feathers as fletching. Held on with string and super glue. Made broad heads from and old stop sign. Think primitive style arrows lol. Never hunted with them. Lots of trial and error.
Purple heart? Never mind draw weight. Only 50lbs? I honestly thought it would be heavier. Whats the weight of bow?
Hold up. All these years and I could have used card board stacked held together with bungee cords for targets. 🤦🏻♂️ we used a huge chunk of blue dock Styrofoam for a target. We were constantly replacing fletching. Your work is awesome.
It works great! Recommend using spray glue between each layer then the ratchet strap. Been through many arrows and still holding up
Nice very nice 🙂👍
Well…: It may be Viking inspired, but it isn‘t a Viking bow: profile, tips, length, wood - everything different. Tiller right limb could be better…
beautiful bow!
Are you by chance selling any?
I do take commission orders. You can contact me through my website, bowtellbows.com
I learnt that Vikings used bows. Thanks. Why did you use bees wax and not boiled linseed oil or similar?
The customer wanted beeswax with tallow so that is what we did. Both finishes would work
Peter north
4get the music otherwise great!
Wouldn't those huge lumps of bone on the end of the bow, slow it the hang down. I certainly wouldn't want those things hanging off the end of my bow.
They do slow the bow down but that is what the customer wanted. If you make them lighter and narrow the limb more then it can compensate for the weight. Most of the time, they are just for aesthetics.
Interesting. I'm thinking of doing a laminated bow with the outer plies in purple heart and the center osage orange.
Osage and Purple Heart are quite pretty together. Best of luck!
Nice, have you ever tried making a bow out of any types of ironwood?
Not yet but would love to eventually
In my experience, EA40 doesn't require hotbox. Room temp for 24 hrs. Good luck with future builds!
That is true. The instructions say that it can improve the epoxy’s performance if you heat it but it is not required.
Had best experience with steaming, using form to achieve desired bend, and then follow up with dry heat via heat gun. Dry heat seems to "set" bend . . . less spring-back when limb removed from form.
That is a really good point and I agree. I have burned a few limbs with the heat gun so careful application and attention is a good idea.
How is it shooting
Last I heard it is very nice and smooth.
What do you think of Yellow Balau I know it very hard. About 1700
If I could get my hands on some I would love to try it. No other thoughts though
Your too close to the target
It’s about 20’. What range do you suggest?
@@BowtellBows 30 yards and up max 40
If you want to know if you're arrows are tuned but if you are hunting short distance don't bother
Steam, then heat gun to set and harden
And don,t forget a touch of the blarney ,,,
Love the bow and your work vise. I would rather some narration than just useless background music.
Thank you. I’ll try that next time
Bout ti make my 1st bow. Ash is what I want to go with. Any advice? I'm 74 years old, just something to do. 😊
Biggest advice is start with a good piece of hickory if you can get some and go for it!
Awful music

I couldn't watch this video. Watching him using a dull draw knife made my skin crawl.
Gorilla glue been around for a long time
Pas très puissant ! Beaucoup de sophistication pour pas grand chose ...😒
That’s what the customer wanted. Could have been more but if you can’t pull it, what’s the point?
What wood, or woods did you use? I thought I saw some oak.
You got it! White oak for the handle and red oak for the limbs.
And when the world needed him most, he returned!
beautiful bow bro
The bow i built also made a tiny crackling and my hart sank, hopefully this will save it
Best of luck! This bow did last a bit longer but it did eventually break unfortunately.
But would you trust it?
Guess only time will tell.
Well done, its always interesting to see another interpretation of a bow. Have you seen the Nydam bows I made for my apprenticeship many years ago? th-cam.com/video/6XhcoTg-bfo/w-d-xo.html
How much? Also, have you tried yew wood?
I have made a couple yew bows now and it is a very interesting wood. Makes a great bow for sure. If you are interested in getting a Padauk bow for yourself, you can reach out to me through my website at bowtellbows.com
Just found u and subbed.
Thank you for the support
Your cat makes for a brilliant distraction. Great video though, very useful. I have some cherry that was cut 5 months ago but I have not split it into staves. It is under shelter. Am I OK leaving it or do you recommend splitting?
He is a good cat and thank you. I have found that I am usually good leaving logs whole or split if in a shelter. Only problem I ran into lately is bugs wanting to eat under bark. If you can and haven’t yet debarked the tree, I’d recommend doing that so the bugs don’t get to your treasured stave. Best of luck!
@@BowtellBows thanks for such a fast answer and for some excellent advice. I will strip it down tomorrow. Stay blessed.
An awesome build!! May it protect you n your's, hearth n home.. Very well!!!! Cheers! 🏹👍🧙♂️🐺🏹
Great video! Good advice and explanations! I love how you didnt edit out any of the awkward moments 😂 made me laugh a few times cause i can imagine how awkward the whole content creation/talking to a camera lens life can get. It was a nice break from the usual creators with their edit witchcraft. Keep on keepin on my guy. You got my follow.
Thank you! Just being myself I guess
Amazing! What would be you go to wood for Bow?
For me, I would say hickory. It makes a great bow and can put up with a lot of abuse. Also, really easy to get a hold of.
