  • Lemonwood, or Degame, does not come from a Lemon tree but is called lemonwood due to its light color. I have heard of so many different bows from the early target archery period using this wood for their bows with great success, so I wanted to give it a try. This was my first time working with the wood and making a bow out of it and I am pleased to say that it was a great success!
    Biggest lesson learned was during the glue up of the Purple Heart handle riser onto the bow blank. After working it a little bit and starting to floor tiller the bow, I saw that the handle riser was moving. After another attempt, I used the bowyer epoxy EA-40 smooth on and that did the trick.
    Other than that, this wood worked very similar to other white woods.

    We stopped Using lemon wood because we used to get it cheap through Cuba. But the embargo in 1959 changed all that.
    It was common bow wood back in the 20s and 30s.
    Nice job on that bow young buck👍

      Thank you for the comment! Makes complete sense. Unfortunate for sure since it is such a beautiful wood.

    Was just reading Paul Comstock's section "Other Bow Woods" in the "Traditional Bowyer's Bible" (1st edition), and I thought I would try to see what people were building online. I've built bows out of osage orange, hackberry, oak (lumberyard wood), walnut w/hickory backing...I'm happy to see young folks doing this kind of stuff.

      I was inspired by the Bowyers Bible to try out different woods for self bows and have been enjoying the challenge of working with them. When I looked up bow videos, I didn’t see many people doing it so I thought I would give it a shot. Sounds like you have been adventuring out as well. Do you have your work online somewhere I can view it?

      @@BowtellBows no, I never put anything online. Maybe 8 years ago, when there weren't but a handful of videos this site about bow building, I was making a video about how quick a possible full-weight hunting bow could be made out of a limb, with a mora 511 knife. The video was horrible, and I realized I had anxiety about being in front of a camera, so I abandoned the project. I feel like I have built a few decent bows, but I don't have near your ability, skill, or thoroughness. I had a friend who built amazing self and primitive bows here in middle Iowa. He had gotten Deer, a Moose, and Proghorn Antelope with his self bows. He had crazy talent like you

      I understand getting behind the camera isn’t for everyone for sure. Sometimes I like just working on a bow without the camera and then other times it helps me focus. Thank you for your comment and support and wish you the best!

    Lemon wood and purple heart gives off oil. Use thinners to rub down the wood before glueing

    • @BowtellBows
      @BowtellBows  ปีที่แล้ว

      That makes sense! I will surely do that next time. Thank you

      @@BowtellBows I've had exactly the same thing years ago. Now I soak my woods in that category in thinners. I've not had the glue give way since. But have had bows burst hahaha my fault on them. Good luck.
