Art journal, paint, draw & create with Luz, mixed media artist and founder of Brave Art Academy!
I love art journaling, creating soulful portraits, mixed media collages and abstract paintings coming from my inner world. I host online painting classes and courses in my studio.
Painting is a wonderful way to express yourself. It could help you to bring balance in your life, overcome issues, get outside your mind and meet some new parts of your soul. And of course painting is big fun!
In these videos I'll share with you moments of my daily life, to give you an idea of how I live and work. Sometimes it will be a tutorial, a review of my fav materials or I share with you some pages in my art journal.
For more info, visit my website: www.luzartworks.com
Would you like to learn the techniques that I use, then follow one of my painting courses!

How To Start An Art Journal 📔 | Tutorial
With this step-by-step plan you can begin your art journal today, creating your own creative project!
See more art journal videos like this? Click th-cam.com/video/IJ1ELagLPG0/w-d-xo.html
This video is about how to start an art journal. It's not difficult, you can use anything you want. The most important thing is: to get started! There are just six easy steps:
1. Pick an art journal to work in
You can use any book you want, I'll add a list of books you could try. Of course, you can consider making a book yourself or work in a second hand book. Make sure the pages are thick enough to work with paint and collage. In this video I work in the Buku, a project by a friend of mine, Meta. IN the future we think about creating Buku's with real art journal pages. If you want to know more about this, send me an email: luz@luzartworks.com.
Below, you can find some other suggestions for art journals to purchase.
2. Select a colour palette you want to work with today
I suggest you just work with just one bright colour (like blue, green, yellow, red or whatever you like) and take some neutrals, like brown, ochre and grey. I at least take a light colour, a middle colour and a dark colour to get contrast in my pages.
3. Collect some items matching your colour palette
It really helps me to gather some things that match my colour palette.
- a little inspiration image; this could be an image out of a magazine, a postcard or just an image you stumbled upon being on Pinterest, Facebook etc.;
- a. nice piece of (colored) paper; I go for a fibre paper with leafs in it;
- a prepatterned piece of paper, you could also create your own pattern;
- a small sketch to give the pages something of your own;
- a piece of fabric, thread, or anything matching your colour palette;
- search for an image out of your newspaper based on colour;
- at the end of the video I take some flowers for my garden to add to your pages.
4. Create a background
You can create a background by gluing down some pieces of paper. I really love working with acrylic paint first. I use a spalter (a broad brush) and a roller.
5. Play around with your composition
After creating a solid background you can play around with your collected pieces of paper, fabrics etc. until you have a nice composition. I mostly make sure that I have returning elements on the left and right page.
IF IT FAILS...
In this video you see me working on the background because I'm not satisfied with the colours. Nothing really fails, even when you think all hope is lost. Just go on, find your flow and go back to an earlier step. I go back to step 4 a couple of times, until it feels right. Sometimes it helps to add a new colour. Or to take a distance from your work and have a little walk outside. You will return to your project with new inspiration and new elements to use for your pages.
6. Do some mark making to bring it together
Now your work is almost finished, the puzzle is almost completed. You just have to add some small marks... like lines, little patterns and things to connect the loose elements. I work with some Derwent inktense pencils and I use some flowers from the garden.

You're so inspirational ❤ Thank you.
Thank you for watching! I’m glad you find inspiration here!
Liefs, Marloes
Thank you. What a helpful video. ♥
Thank you for watching, I’m happy it inspires you! 💕
Lovely video, Luz! Although I've been doing art journaling for two years now, I still like to see how you approach it. And of course, you've chosen a beautiful color palette again. Very inspiring, thank you!
Thanks Machteld, that's so nice to hear! I was a bit struggling finding my colours. But in the end, it will always be good.
Such a good lesson. Be brave. Change during the process if it’s not working. 💖💖💖
Thank you very much Debra, also for your support! 😘😘😘 Yes! Be brave!
So relaxing to watch! I wish I could go on one of your retreats... it looks so companionable, working with a group of like-minded people. Glad it went so well!! It makes me waant to get my gel plates out again!! 🥰
It would be lovely to have you there! It was a great group, and there was so much inspiration. The participants even went up early to work in the studio before breakfast, some went there after dinner, until deep in the night! I joined them a couple of times, it was just wonderful!
Love those colors, as always. So beautiful travel journal ❤😊
Thank you so much for watching again! Love from the Netherlands!
Very creative and beautiful work. I really enjoy your colour palette choices. Thanks for sharing 😊
You're welcome! Thank you for stopping by and watch this video. Much love from the Netherlands.
Just found your channel and I've sub'd. I used to do junk journals, but recently I started to sketch in pen and watercolours. I can see here that the two can be combined when i travel. Your art journal is gorgeous. I'm hoping you've got tutorials to show me how you created such lovely pages. Thank you.
Thanks for subbing! Almost everything is possible when you work in a journal! You can still mix with paper, magazine images, etc. etc. and combine this with drawings and watercolour. Have fun with your new adventure! Love from the Netherlands!
Coucou ! Super promenades à travers ta vue des paysages français. J'aime tes harmonies Ton dernier paysage m'a enchantée.
Lovely. When you where talking about noticing the heart. I notice the candle in your video has a heart shaped center where the wax melted. Just a little thing, but maybe you should paint it in your journal. God bless 💕
Wow so good you noticed that, haven’t seen that myself! I have already burned the candle, so now it isn’t in a heart shape anymore. But I will paint it from the video. Thanks for the idea!
I really loved your painting of the view from the duck farm and ofcourse the tree with the little heart 💘 Great video of your beautiful journal, dear Luz!
Thank you so much Machteld!
Thank you for sharing your poetry as well as your wonderful art journal. 💖💖💖
Thank you very much, I'm happy you like the poetry as well. Much love from the Netherlands!
no accident your name defines your heart...out of the heart the mouth speaks... the heart means Spirit, not the bios.... yr art shares how the bios,/world/ flesh domain, mirrors yr experience of nature's simple beauty.. well done...ty...
Wow that seems like poetry to me, wonderful words! I think going inwards as well as outwards is very important... when those things overlap, you find the real spirit. Thank you for your precious comment.
I just love the picture of Pearl walking towards the lonely chapel on the hill!
Thanks Isis, she made long walks in this place...
Beautiful work, Luz! Thank you for sharing! You have inspired me to get my Dina Wakeley journal out to create it in it in hopes of completing it one day! 🤗
Thank you, so nice you feel inspired to continue working in your journal again! Much love from the Netherlands!
I adore your flip throughs. Thank you for sharing them with us. I especially loved the imagery with your cats.
You are so welcome, thanks for watching! So, you're a cat lover too? Much love from the Netherlands.
Maruman
Thank you for the tip, I'll surely look into that brand, AND thanks for watching, Mary! 😘
Love your art abilities and the music is peaceful. Thank you for sharing❤❤
Thank YOU for watching!
I like Seawhite of Brighton sketchbooks.
Thank you I’ll take a look at those!
I really LOVE your little self made art journals!!!
Thank you so much dear!
Very good information in this video, pity about the discontinuation. As far as bookbinding goes there are two people on youtube I will go to for that. Nic the Booksmith and Sea Lemon both very knowledgeable women - Nic has a few good tales to tell at times as well while making a book 😊
hat really sound great I’ll look them up! Thank you! And very brave you’ll try the bookbinding!
I make a journal a month for writing and making an art page, and have made my journals since about 2017 I think, maybe? 😊 not all of them have been kettle stitch bound though. I made a couple of the Tom Riddle's diary from Sea Lemon, and I am contemplating making a couple more as dedicated mixed media journals.
That sounds like you have a lot of experience! So nice. I just created the mini books and repaired the cover of a Dina Wakley book, but will look at the channels you mention. Thanks!
Thanks 😊 still a lot to learn and one day I might be blessed enough to be able to take part in a bookbinding course. Until then, I learn what I can from youtube. Repairing a cover is a job in and of itself, well done. Minis are fun to work in, my current journal pages are 5.7" x 8.26" they are so great to work in, but a challenge at times, and it makes me think on what I am going to do on the 'art page' with those measurements.
Thanks for the video! Do you mind sharing the brand of the glued sketchbook that you don't recommend? I would use it for watercolor only so it wouldn't be such an issue that it's glued and not sewn. Thanks!
Yes of course, if I could! But it's sold by an European budget shop named Action and there's no brand on the sketchbook. I bought it in the store, not online. But here's a link so you can find simular items: www.action.com/nl-nl/p/3201783/schetsboek/
Pages will stick together atleast in my experience but I do love the softcover strathmore mixed media despite this. I use transparent vellum and just stick it inbetween the pages and it seems to work wonders
Yes I bet that can happen in almost every book… I like your idea with vellum pages. You could also use baking paper to put between the pages. Thanh’s for sharing your experience and have a nice weekend!
So beautiful and inspiring! I love your style. The cat pages were adorable! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching, jive you stopped by and left a comment. Much love from the Netherlands!
I found your video helpful. 😊. I make journals but have never worked with watercolor paper, canvas or burlap. That could be fun. Right? 😊
Yes I believe it really adds something extra to your art book. Thanks for watching and have fun creating your journal!
Denise love had the same frustration as you and created a class on making your own book. See in skillshare, artisanal journal class.
Yes, that's a wonderful class! I am orientating now on how to create a book myself and if I am a little further in the process, I will definitively share her class in one of the videos.
Wonderful 💖
Thanks so much!
I really love those colours 😍 and the idea. Thank you!
You're welcome! Thanks so much for watching! Hope to see you next time again.
J'adore ❤
Merci beaucoup Laure! 😘
Beautiful and interesting work as usual, Luz! 🥰 I also get car sick like you mentioned, but when I do art in the car, I don't. I never thought it was because it's coming from within, but that is it! Interesting! Thank you for sharing! Blessings! 🙏🏼🤗
So nice you've been watching another video! Yes, I always thought I was car sick, but that was just when I tried to read a map or when I searched something on my cell phone.... but not when making art! It was a great discovery! Now, we have our cat with us, taking the backseat (that is next to the table)... this makes it a challenge, because I love to work with a table. Luckily there are still some things I can do at the front seat.
@@luzartworks I am watching all your videos and I love them! So inspiring! And Pearl! She's so precious! 🥰
Lovely overview, dear Luz! 😍
Thanks dear!
wow, this is just stunning-I can’t wait to start one!
It’s amazing to do! Thanks for watching!
Love your artbook ❣️
Thank you so much!
The lion's story is very nice. I'm working on several journals; 365 day bible verse collage cards, paper dolls blending into the art of master artists (I would like to do some doors and windows with these.) Kind of different. Too many ideas. God bless
Thank you for watching! Sounds like a great way to do, to work each day on it! I am very curious how your pages look like and also, what kind of cut out windows you create. Have a lot of fun!
I enjoy using cut outs in my journals. Not as creatively as yours. 😂 I sometimes incorporate window envelopes for this purpose. If you decide to create your own art journal, I hope you will bring us along to watch. 💖💖💖
That's a great idea too Debra! And yes, I'm working hard to find an alternative for the Dina Wakley journals, have ordered several kinds of paper and will be making my own art journal soon as well. As soon as I have the hang of it, I'll definitely share how to make your own here on the Tube! Love, luz
I love the way your cut outs and windows continue the story and provide interaction. Thank you for sharing your thought process with us, too. :)
Thank you very much Linda that's so kind of you, and of course, you're welcome. Thanks for watching and commenting! Love, Luz
So lovely. I especially love all the lavender fields. 💜
Beautiful journal pages, Luz! Thank you for sharing! 🥰I like to use Gamblin cold wax medium on top of my pages once they're finished. It keeps them from sticking. Just rub a little on them with a cloth, polish and voila! It works!😃
That’s a great idee, I’m going to try that! Thank you for watching!
Great video! Not your Grandma..hilarious!! :)
Thank you and I'm glad you like it! 😘
Lovely video! You inspire me to use dry flowers & other natural materials in my work! <3
Yes, it's great to do so! Thanks for watching!
I really like your pages. Very soft. Also, I think it would be fun if Anthony was in a video! God bless
Thanks so much! Yes, I'd hope to paint together too. Let's hope for more comments!
A collab with you and Anthony would be wonderful. Love every page, but especially the ones where you used the petals as clothing.
Yes, I'd love that too. Thanks for watching this video again! It's really nice to use petals for clothes or any other illustrative goal... I did this also with children and it was amazing what came up! Planes, butterflies, angel wings etc.
It will be great to have Antony painting along! 😊 I really love your spread Luz. Thank you for sharing ❤️😘
Thanks so much, we had a lot of fun creating this video! I hope for more replies for Anthony painting in one of the next videos. Stay tuned!
Thank you, Luz, for sharing your tips and beautiful work!Lovely video🥰 Yes!To the hidden question 😁 Also, when I use dry flowers in my journal, sometimes I carefully paint them with watercolor to brighten them up. Have you ever tried that? I think even very watered-down acrylic would work 😃 Have a blessed week! 🤗
Oooo that's a great tip! I mostly keep the flowers as they are, but would be great if you want to be sure about the colour. I'm happy you love the video. Thanks for watching!
