Assignment 1: Finish the image
On the first page you see an image that came from a magazine (I think this is a very old Dutch artist's magazine). I cut out a small piece of that image and finished it myself. This is a lovely assignment to improve your paint mixing skills. I also did this assignment with my weekly students. The adults worked with the materials they preferred, mostly with acrylic paint. The children worked with soft pastels. It's really great to see what kind of images came to life, based on just a small thumbnail of a scene. Try it out yourself, select an image based on colours that you\d like to work with and complete the picture!
In my case (and Machteld's case; she used the other half of the image) it became a very sweet painting, in an old fashioned French style, with a lovely white cat on a chair.
On the right page, I earlier cut of some burlap. I had to fix that page, so I added a piece of jeans fabric. I am really in love with this jeans, I love the pink stitchwork, I love the washing of it... I feel unhappy I've torn it apart... but it just wasn't my style to wear and it was broken. So, luckily I can re-use it in my art journal. I glued down some dried flowers and a halm of grass, I did some sewing to create stalks and to connect some things in the same pink as the stitchwort of the jeans. I love that the pages are quite similar in style, one with real flowers, one with a painted bouquet of flowers.
Spring time and a mini book
On the second spread you can see the Spring is closing in... I gathered inspiritaton from the flowers in and around my house. The first blossoms coming out, little flowers popping up... I am amazed by this season every year again, it's definitely my favourite time of the year. I tried to capture that in my mini book. It's very fun to create a book. I did this one in three phases:
1. Selecting pages for the book and choosing a colour palette.
2. Filling some background elements, with acrylic paint or with paper areas. I just kept going with three colours: blue, purple and brown (and of course some white areas).
3. Creating a flower on each page, in my case I plucked the flowers of my own (and neighbour's) garden).
It's really fun to create a book like this!
Peony Tulips
On the final page you see a very free expression of peony tulips. I am so in love with this kind of tulips. The Netherlands are famous for these amazing flowers and you can see them anywhere in the countryside (yep, also where I live!). It's really lovely to buy tulips in little stands, that's where I bought these peony tulips. These ones are a bit pink, yellow and even purple. The first layer of this spread was created with the palette knife, so the pages already have some body and texture. After that I created the tulips with thick layers of paint, also with the palette knife. in the last phase, I sharpened the lines with Derwent ink tense pencils . It was great to do.

Always interesting and individualist. Thank you
Thank you so much for your comment, I really appreciate that. Much love from the Netherlands.
I was very impressed by the paintings created by the children, using parts of magazine pictures. You're such a great teacher by inspiring them with these assignments! But i am really totally inlove with your pale pink tulips. Such a beautiful spread, amazing!!
Thank you so much! I must admit the children are very talented and they really enjoyed this assignment (just like you!). And thank you for the compliment about the tulip page. Also a lovely thing, worth doing.

You’re welcome!
J'adore !
Prachtig filmpje weer lieve Marloes, de tulpen pagina is prachtig. Zijn mijn lievelingsbloemen. Je inspireert me weer 😊
My favorite flower is a ranunculus, they come in many colors and have delicate petals! I must say however, that I love all flowers, will be planting some white daisies this weekend! 😊
Daisies and ranunculus are beautiful flowers! I love so many... roses, peonies, sunflowers... and of course all wildflowers like poppies and cornflowers. Luckily we're in the flower season again. Where do you live?
@@luzartworks Hello Luz, I live in southeastern Brasil... across the Atlantic and down quite a way, 8n the state of Sao Paulo. It's all very green!
@@831Miranda that sounds so inspiring, where you live! I'd wish I could go there someday.
