    Great view of the Matterhorn. It almost didn’t look real out there among the clouds. Wow - you guys were brave going over that long suspension bridge! How long was that? How civilized having that wooden overhang over the edge of the trail to protect hikers from falling rocks. That partially filled tube was pretty sketchy. Was thinking you’d get in and come to a place it was all blocked off. Wonder how they got all that concrete, rebar, and metal tubes all the way up there to make that all? Must be all those helicopters you constantly saw. Thanks for sharing your epic trip!

    • @hikinghomesteaders
      @hikinghomesteaders 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It didn't seem real to us either! The Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge is about 500 meters, so about .3 miles long. It felt like it went on forever! The overhang was concrete and rebar! And we were very grateful for it. Some rock actually fell while we were traversing. The culvert full of mud really made our hairs stand on end! Every one kept getting worse. I think the AT really taught us, the only way is forward! Helicopter deliveries were so normal over there, cannon imagine the training and skill it takes to fly those over such rugged terrain. Thank you for being so supportive of our channel!

    So I see you are over two weeks now walking the Haute Route. I thought it could easily be done in a shorter amount of time. How much time do you recommend?

    • @hikinghomesteaders
      @hikinghomesteaders 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It took us 16 days with rest days before and after. This was our honeymoon, so we wanted to really take things slow. I wouldn't really suggest going much faster than this either. Huts need to you check in by a certain time and the rocky terrain can be really slow going. You could probably do it in 12-14 days if you wanted to rush through it and potentially get injured.

    So that's how my wife and I can use that food processor that we bought in a Savers about 10 years ago and never used. A date ball or date stick recipe has been in my family for at least 70 years. My grandmother got it out of a magazine. I'm shocked to run across another person that knows about something close to the recipe. I've never met anybody that knew about our recipe. They're absolutely amazing tasting. Absolutely amazing tasting to the max! Lol. Seriously, though, I put out some of the ingredients last night. I'm going to start making them for the hiking season this year. Now that is a coincidence. Thanks for all the tips. This is a particularly useful video on food. About our recipe, first, You should buy a nut grinder from a kitchen supply store. It's much easier to chop up the walnuts that way. It also works really well on pecans and peanuts. Almonds will destroy a nut chopper. Our recipe is the following: Approximately two cups of chopped dates. Half a cup of sugar or a third cup of honey. Stick of butter. One egg. Two cups of Rice Krispies. Half a cup of chopped walnuts. Organic dried coconut flakes. We melt the butter in a saucepan on a medium-low heat and add the sugar. When the butter is melted, we add the dates and start stirring the three ingredients on a medium heat. Sugar works better than honey because sugar will caramelize. Honey won't. Honey will end up with loose and sticky date treats. The sugar will hold them and bind them together. But the honey is healthful for your diet. So make your choice. You will next add the egg. I like to beat the egg first and very gradually stir it in as I stir The other ingredients in the pan vigorously. The trick is not to let the cook the egg before it's mixed in with the other ingredients. So stir quickly. By now, those other ingredients should be a sticky paste. The egg will serve to hold them together better. Take the cooked off the heat when it is smooth and sticky, like a nugghaut. You can let it cool a little bit or you can start to add the walnuts and then the Rice Krispies. But the longer you wait, the harder it will be to stir these two ingredients into the mixture. When it's cool enough to handle the mixture, start rolling it into sticks or into balls and then roll those liberally in fresh coconut. You are done. It will take you about an hour to do all of that. I usually do two or three or even four batches at a time just because it's such a sticky mess all over your hands that you just want to get that part done once and for all. That's a lot of calories in four batches. I think you'll like our recipe a little bit better than yours, even though it requires a bit more work. Bon appetit!

    • @hikinghomesteaders
      @hikinghomesteaders 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Chris! What a joy your comment was to come across. Thank you a million for sharing your family recipe, this really inspired us! We'll be sure to make several batches for this summers hiking season. May we use maple syrup instead of honey or sugar? We made 60 gallons of it this year in our sugarbush - so it's a favorite ingredient around here. We also have a coffee grinder, do you think that would work for the nuts? Hope you have a really joyful day, thank you again! :) Happy Trails, Evan & Caroline

    • @chriseidam7319
      @chriseidam7319 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@hikinghomesteaders As far as using a coffee grinder for the nuts, as long as you don't overdo it. You want pieces of walnut that are pretty much the size of a Rice krispie. Maybe half the size of Rice krispie. But if it ends up being like dust that won't be the same. It will change what it is. I think you'll have the same problem with maple syrup that I had with honey, being that it won't caramelize like granulated sugar. Even brown sugar didn't work as well as granulated white sugar. I have used stevia as a sugar substitute, and that actually worked okay. You have to use about two-thirds less. I bet the maple syrup would give it a really cool taste. Might I suggest that you do one with granulated sugar to see how they're supposed to be, and then do a second batch using the maple syrup to compare how well they congeal, the overall texture, if it's going to caramelize or not, etc, etc, etc. That's how I learned that honey didn't work well, but stevia did, as long as I used two-thirds less than I used for sugar.

      @@hikinghomesteaders Hahaha good point... few things would derail a hike more effectively than a case of mad cow disease!! 😱😱

      One of our favorite parts of the hotels overseas! Just took us an extra 10 minutes to learn their secret jiggle LOL

    Great views the whole way. And even artwork (or was that a giant weathervane) along the trail. Looks like a real cozy place you ended up. Thanks for sharing!

      So glad you enjoyed Mike. Thank you so much for following along. We are still not sure...We hope it was a weathervane. :)

    Glad you survived Everett in the heat. Hiked it several times, felt like a rotisserie chicken on that climb and also Bear in Connecticut. Happy Trails. 🏃🏼‍♀️Pokey the Gatorade packing trail angel on AT in NW Ct and Massachusetts 😎

      I can't tell you how scary it was braving the heat on Everett. It's the first time I really thought I could pass out from dehydration. Really shows you the importance of electrolytes. Happy Trails Pokey! Hope 2024 blesses you with much joy and adventure. Warmly - Gypsy & Fern

    Awesome tips! Thanks for sharing. I really want to stay as paleo as possible in my future thru hike. I don’t see the links you guys mentioned on details about food dehydration and packaging and also best places to send resupply boxes to.
