    You are so funny 😄 Another reason to not pull from the centre of a ball, unless it is specified centre pull, is that you can alter the twist. To see what I mean, take a measuring tape and roll it up, place it on its side on the table and pull from the middle - see the lovely twisty ribbon? If that is yarn, and that twist is going with the ply direction, you are increasing the twist and can end up with the yarn plying back on itself and tangling while you knit. If it is going against the ply you are loosening the twist and end up with a splitty yarn. I fully agree with you on the sock yarn. Yarn for socks needs to have a high twist in order to be durable and super wash sock yarns do not. I made socks from sock yarn and they lasted around 25 wears before the soles wore through. I knitted the same pattern of socks from high twist Corriedale/alpaca (no nylon) and they are still going after at least 150 wears. The same is true for my dorset/silk socks, and my suffolk/alpaca socks. The high twist is the vital part. Also, super wash socks will felt and shrink long before non-superwash even when carefully hand washed - I've proven that many times over the last 30 years of sock knitting. I agree with all your other opinions, not necessarily for the same reasons, but I'm onboard 😆

      Yes! I didn't get into the twist issue with pulling from the center because I'm terrible at explaining it. Thank you for the the great explanation!

    I agree with you on knots in knitting. Personally I prefer to use the way that's now called 'weaving Stephen', because Stephen West showed it on youtube ... but I did it already before Stephen was even born (and it wasn't my invention, someone taught me how to do it)

    I tried to buy my first yarn advent calendar in August 2021 and everyone I was interested in was sold out. Last year I bought three-two became available in April and one in May. This year I bought four-two in April, one is sold in 8 monthly releases and the other goes on sale May 5. All are indie dyers that have been in business for years and that I have purchased yarn from before. I am not concerned about not receiving the yarn. I derived a great deal of joy opening the advents each day. I also have used 2/3 of the mini skeins in knitted projects and will use the remaining 1/3 in a Habitation throw long before the 2023 advents arrive. I see myself continuing to order advents as long as I enjoy opening and actually using them. I do share your concern about market saturation.

    I agree on the knitting machines. They *are* a shortcut and definitely not something process knitters would enjoy. I'm not personally interested in using one (even though I don't really think of myself as a process knitter), but whatever winds your hank, that's cool.
    And yeah, I don't get the obsession for SW Merino for socks. If I have a non-Merino and non SW option, I always choose that.
    I've noticed that now that I have a few project bags, I tend to go for an outside pull more often.
    I also hate the calendar creep. I don't have a strong opinion on knots. Sometimes they are useful but mostly I try to weave in as I go.

    Totally agree on center pulls! It's appealing to pull that center yarn but I always end up regretting it. So I swore off it, bought a pretty wooden yarn holder that spins and love it! ❤

    Thanks for the Friday afternoon smiles! Enjoyed the spicy takes. I have a couple of my own. BTW, center pull sucks most of the time. That's why I cake up my yarn and work from wherever I want.
    1) Cheap or Expensive Yarn "clicks". We aren't in middle school. If yarn makes the maker happy it's a fine yarn for what they are doing.
    2) Using bulky, super bulky, jumbo yarn "because it's faster". You'all, we are engaging in an art/craft where we are literally making fabric. I'm not sure faster is the point. If you use it because you like it, because you think it works best for your project, or pretty much anything except 'because it's faster' is cool with me. I'm also not opposed to going fast. It just winds me up to use a certain yarn just because it might go faster. Of course, I'm a person that doesn't mind ripping back and remaking because then I just get to spend more time with that yarn, doing an activity that I love. So maybe I'm the odd ball. I feel like choosing a yarn because it's comfortable to use, comfortable to wear, well suited to the project or use, are all so much more important than the size of the yarn. Maybe I'm jealous.....I struggle with anything larger than a #4 worsted weight due to arthritis and weight of project hanging off needles, weight of the needles themselves, etc. Nope.....that's not it. I just don't get the because it's faster thought.
    3) I don't understand yarn shaming for stash size. That's not anyone's concern as long as it doesn't directly impact them. Everyone has a different comfort level with the amount of supplies and different available budget. If you are good with what you have, then great! This also goes to people getting upset when someone gets to a sale before them and buys all the yarn of a certain color. Again, nobody's business why someone needs/wants all of that yarn, and last I checked, if you really wanted/needed it, then why wait until it's on clearance, as well as not make getting to the clearance sale a priority. Hey, early bird gets the worm, all the worms if they want, LOL
    I have more, but you don't need a novel here. Really have enjoyed your videos. Found you because of your video that included the hat-top-sock-heel tutorial. Wonderful & Thank you.

      So happy to hear you are enjoying the channel. And agree size of someone else's stash or what's in it, is none of my business. I'll happily share my reasons for my choices but I'm not judging others by and large.

    I am a firm center puller - I try for a big blanket either outside pull, or center pull, and I finally stay on my center pull lane. Outside pull is easier to find, and hold better at the end of the ball, but having the ball moving around all the time annoy me SO MUCH !!! Center pull feed me yarn much better. But, if you got yarn barf, or need to frog, don't make an other ball ... Just wind the string around the ball ? You get something like a outside pull for all that extra yarn, and return to center pull after

    Oh gosh I can't even with the Advent calendars way too early. I agree with all you takes. I get I shouldn't knot, but I can't help myself. I leave long tails on my knot and weave those in.
    I had to do a center pull on a commercial skein recently because I'm working in ombre and I didn't want the same shade to end one skein and start the next. I'm still working through that mess of yarn barf 4 days later with a bunch of it still in a mess. It's so frustrating!

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've had ombré yarn like that. I those situations. I'll carefully rewind the skein so the center becomes the outside. At least then I don't have the yarn card while working the project.

    I got a sentro, mostly for making sock blanks. It's definitely not the same experience as hand knitting, but they can be fun.
    Also, I don't slip the selvedge when I'm going to use mattress stitch. I wonder how much of a difference it actually makes.😂. And, you're preaching to the choir on the anti knot front.
    Also, I'm a spinner too. Couldn't agree more about wool and socks. I'm considering making some Romney socks soon. Much more sturdy.

    • @CarrieCraftGeek
      @CarrieCraftGeek  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't use slip stitch selvedge when seaming either. But, this is s raw edge. Well I could go an applied icord but not sure I want to do that.

    Completely right on the calendar creep, the whole thing is insane and as you said in a previous video the protections for buyers from a lot of these businesses are bypassed when you accept such delayed shipping.

    • @CarrieCraftGeek

      So true and I don't think most people are aware that they are giving up their consumer protection. And I want to stress the vast majority of businesses intend to fulfill their orders in a timely manner. But, intentions doesn't change impact.

    The sock yarn thing I think is going to be regional. Here in the UK the main alternative to merino is bfl (which, yes, I believe is supposed to be good for socks, I haven't actually knit with it yet). We don't seem to have the same variety as the US; I've seen the odd corriedale but it's super rare. Other fibre, unless you spin, is just not an option. 🤷‍♀️ Which is a shame, because I'd like to try them but delivery from the US is super expensive.

      I normally have to purchase sick yarn online to find sock yarn nor made with merino superwash. Love crafts has a wide selection.

    imo “knitting” on a knitting machine isn’t actually knitting. which is not to say that it’s “lesser” than hand-knitting, because you’re still creating something, but to me it’s just an entirely different skillset
    that being said i would love a circular knitting machine someday

    Weaving in ends is the actual worst. But knots are still worse.
