How to Navigate an Intake Session with a New Therapy Client
Here I walk you through what I do before and during the initial intake in private practice with a new therapy client!
Every therapy client is different, so I generalize quite a bit here.
And! Therapists conduct the intake a bit different based on their training, geographical location, supervision status, board requirements, and work setting. Therefore, this is not the "only" or "correct" way to do an intake session, this is simply what works for me in private practice.
In more depth, we'll chat about the consultation call, electronic paperwork, and the intake itself. We jump around quite a bit in here because no intake is the same!
*Disclaimer: As a reminder, this is not intended to be a substitute for supervision, consultation, or professional advice. Please contact your supervisor or licensing board for more information if you need professional consultation. This is also not intended to be a substitute for therapy or psychological intervention. Please contact your doctor to discuss your unique mental and physical health needs.*

    How do you deal with folks who move from one therapist to the next bc of maybe the first visit seems like more answering questions and less venting. But if they keep doing this, the never get past the intake phase. Also for online therapy, often dont have the 15 min initial call, so just messaging maybe then x amt sessions per month.

    Great video for new therapist. Where does a new therapist get these eforms?

    • @drkristencasey
      @drkristencasey 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      so glad it helped! the EMR system you have will sometimes supply you with forms that you can edit to your liking. I'd suggest taking a look at your ethics code for your state to ensure that you have everything in those notes that are needed (i.e., date of service, diagnosis, etc) and to know how quickly you're required to get your notes in. also, if you work for a company or group practice, they likely have a policy / notes in general, but in private practice i usually rely on the ethics code for that (at least for psychologists, not sure if other disciplines are similar). another option is to chat with any colleagues or supervisors who have their own forms to see if you like those, too. welcome to the field!

    Hello. JUst starting out as a Holistic psychotherapist. Have you any useful tips for building a client base. I have worked as a wellbeing Practioner for awhile already. I gained my degree in psychology and my Masters in mental health. I have been an assistant Psychologist for awhile too but wanted to specialize holistically. I am lost as to where to start to make sure I have a steady few clients each day as I could not afford, at this point in my life, to not have at least 4 clients a day. Any support and help setting up would be so much appreciated as I have worked so hard to get to where I am. Thank you

    Hey Kristen, this really isn’t related to this vid but, I wanted to ask if it’s true that you need like a really high IQ to become a psychologist. I see all of these videos saying that and I’m starting to doubt myself lmao. Can someone with an average IQ become a psychologist?

    • @drkristencasey
      @drkristencasey 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey thememessandbox! great question, glad you asked! i don't know any research or initiative that shows that psychologists necessarily *need* a high iq to succeed. if anything, you will be a lifelong student, so the desire to continue learning is essential, if that makes sense. humility and the ability to know when you need to learn more, is better (in my humble opinion) than knowing it all. plus, nobody knows it all :) i hope this helps!

    • @drkristencasey
      @drkristencasey 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question, it depends what you'd like to do with it! If you'd like to become a licensed clinical psychologist in the US at least, you'll need a degree from an APA-accredited university, or be sure that your classes and clinical activities/experiences during your doctorate will count for licensure in the state you are hoping to eventually get licensed in. As far as I know, there are no online-only APA accredited programs. Hope this helps!

      In the US you can apply for a PsyD or PhD with a bachelors! Two suggestions (not sure how much this would apply, and I am sure you've already thought about this!) - call the schools you are potentially interested in for a PsyD to ensure they recognize your degree and to see if they require a master's for application. Hope this helps!!

    Hi! Clinical psychologist here! Great video! I’ve been out almost 20 years. I forgot a lot of the toil and steps. EPPP IS THE WORST! When I talk about my path, people do ask if it’s worth it? My best answer is it depends on what you want to do, but typically no. If you want to be a therapist, there are much easier routes to get there, like a licensed social worker. The yearly compensation is better as a psychologist but there are more years of completely no salary and so much drama in the training!!! If you have an interest in teaching and research or love the idea of doing standardized testing, then sure become a psychologist. Just be warned, getting into grad school is VERY competitive for phd programs and expensive for PsyD programs. Phd programs only take 6-12 students per YEAR and most states have very few programs. My state has one. You need excellent grades, strong GRE & letters of recommendation (typically earned by doing research in undergrad). I do not recommend this field to many. Average starting salary is probably 70k with a license after 10 or so years of working to get there. It’s not enough for the debt you accrue in that time and the effort in those years. You can’t pay yourself back easily and catch up for starting a family or buying a house. It’s hard for years. I also have a psychopharmacology masters. Some states do allow psychologists to prescribe psychotropic meds. If this interests you, then go to med school and make 2-3 times more money in less time or go be an psych NP or PA for the same money in a lot less time than becoming a prescribing psychologist in a state of your choosing with a lot more freedom. Most evidence shows meds to be equal to therapy for the typical things we see. If you can offer both as a provider, then your opportunities will be much better. Hope this all doesn’t sound negative. I’ve had the chance to help a lot of people, but could have done this in a lot less time or made a lot more money. Universities don’t do a good job explaining careers. If you don’t want to be a psychologist, then switch your major from psychology to something else more applicable to the world. Take psych electives if they interest you and volunteer with groups to help others. Remember, college is career training!!!! Your channel is very helpful. Keep it up!!!

    Turn to bible and allow CHRIST to be your therapist, psychologist and psychiatrist. No man nor women fits to be one. All are sinners and without glory, all are tempted and suffer the same. All are expected to REPENT AND BORN AGAIN, to LIVE HOLY AND GO AND SIN NO MORE. All are weak in the daily fight between their spirit and flesh. All these therapist, psychologist and psychiatrist, this world provides, can do is: to deceive and steal. They deceived you through all these “diagnoses” and they steal your money, through all the pills which you “need”. In short: they poison your mind and your overall health, leaving you with neither one. Therapist, Psychologist and Psychiatrist = Field where no human soul, never ever going to fit of being an help, no matter the among of years spend in “medical schools” or the decree gotten from there. ALL of us are daily deceived, no matter the walks of life.
