How to Navigate the Termination Session with a Therapy Client
Here I walk you through what I do before and during the termination session in private practice with a therapy client!
Every therapy client is different, so I generalize quite a bit here.
And! Therapists conduct the termination session a bit different based on their training, therapy modality, client's pressenting concerns, geographical location, supervision status, board requirements, and work setting. Therefore, this is not the "only" or "correct" way to do an termination session, this is simply what works for me in private practice.
In more depth, we'll chat about when to discuss termination, how to go about termination, and the ways in which clients may need termination sooner than anticipated.
*Disclaimer: As a reminder, this is not intended to be a substitute for supervision, consultation, or professional advice. Please contact your supervisor or licensing board for more information if you need professional consultation. This is also not intended to be a substitute for therapy or psychological intervention. Please contact your doctor to discuss your unique mental and physical health needs.*

I'm in my second internship and I am (insert S word)ing bricks! 🧱 I do have an assessment document I'll need to go through but I don't want to be robotic. I'm nervous cuz I haven't watched any intakes before so I'm like oh crap. I'm reminding myself to "just be human" but I want to help them and seem competent 😭
I love how you explain things and you are so authentic. Glad I came across your content. Extremely helpful for my future career. Thank you
She has a potty mouth.
She's pretty

How did you end up passing your math? I feel like I am disabled when it comes to math and I’m also not good at testing. Please help.
Thank you for making videos and supporting us! Still learning and growing in the therapy world ❤
could you make a video about working and living abroad as a clinical psychologist if you have knowledge on this topic :)
Thanks, this was really useful …
Thank you! The video is really helpful
Good advice for new clients. How long would therapy be for bpd? (And possibly anxiety) do y’all get medical records?
I have an MSW and really want to do a PhD, and I am trying to decide if I should do it in psychology or social work.
Which grades is needed for Phd?
Could you do phd direct after bachelor? Without masters? To save time? ??
Thank you so much for this! I just finished my first semester in college majoring in psychology with the goal of becoming a clinical psychologist one day, and this video really helped me to see what my future would look like. I’ve been very nervous about all the work that goes into it and also just because I didn’t know where to begin to become one, but this video has definitely helped! Do you think you could go more in depth on the dissertation process? Also what did you do during your first few years in college (like when you were getting your bachelors and masters degree) to set you up for success for getting into grad school?
So glad it was helpful! Of course, everyone takes a bit of a different path and this was simply my experience / what I can offer from my perspective. There is a big field out there with so many great opportunities. It's also important to keep in mind your own personal, unique interests. Those will guide where you end up (aka follow your heart!). I can certainly discuss more about the dissertation process in another video, I'll add that to my list. Everyone's dissertation process is very unique and it may vary greatly depending on the type of program you enter (i.e., PhD vs PsyD), the type of research you are required to do / want to do (i.e., literature review, measurement-based studies, etc), and how long your program is (i.e., shorter programs may require more frequent dissertation work, as there is less time to get it all done). I have another video about my journey prior to my PsyD program - check that video out! Long story short, I was an EMT and ended up working direct care in behavioral health for a few years prior to doing therapy/counseling under the supervision of an LPC, then it took off from there. I hope this helps, and welcome to the field!
Hello. Thank you so much for the helpful video. I’m in community mental health and part time private practice, and life coach. This video was so helpful. Sometimes I find I want to get all the things in one sesh but this reminds me to just slow down and focus on the vibe. So important. Thank you and I hope you have much success.
thank you so much for your kind comment, and so glad this helps! yes, focusing more on the energy and the mood in the room is very important!
whats the pay like though
Im also planning on getting my associates before my bachelors! I was told its cheaper and more impressive once getting a job. Thats a relief
I have an interview in like 9 more days and I’m super nervous. I’m trying so hard to be confident but I just feel myself going deeper and deeper into a panic attack
This encourages me to apply for a psyD because I feel this all the time
Great pointers. Thank you!!
Gaba and melatonin?
Thank you Shari this was really helpful am currently doing my Degree in Human and Family Services at Brigham Young University Idaho
Hi Kristen, I just came across your page. I have my undergrad in Org Development, M.B.A., and my Ph.D. in Org Leadership. That being said "I really want to become a Clinical Psychologist." Do you have any advice for someone that wants to get into the field? Mental Health is so important to me as a Veteran, I had so many comrades to commit suicide. I have a great deal of respect for the profession.
super helpful, thanks!
I’m a high school senior, I’m scared because I also didn’t have the best grades these last few years .I’m trying to lock in and go online community for an associates degree that’s could help me get my bachelors in psychology… was there anything that troubled you the most other than academics?
This video is so helpful. Thank you for posting. I’m going into my masters to counseling. I really want to do a Psy D eventually too, but I’m so nervous about the math portion. Thank you for sharing!
@@KnickKnackAttack3 I was nervous about math too! There are study materials, professors, and your colleagues/peers who can help you (at least that’s who i relied on!)
Amen, thank you for your vulnerability ❤️🙏🏽
Thank you very much! Another thing I do as a pyschologist is formation in psychological habilities or some knowledge about psychology useful for my community in form of workshop, or online course, or ebook as you said, etc.
Can you help me to find institution providing psy d clinical psychology

Hello, I am loving your videos, do you have any resources on doing the intake or other forms you may use to help with information gathering?
Awesome video
This video is incredibly useful. Sending my best regards from Argentina
Hi! What PsyD program did you do in Arizona? I’m in a very similar place as you!
I am BCBA and I found your video! thank you for sharing!
Quite literally my whole life 😅
As a client (not a therapist), I wish I had seen this. I would have liked to have more response, more check in, more collaboration with my therapist. I spent a lot of time wondering what she was thinking about. I think it's important to explain things upfront early on. Coming from a client (not a therapist) I lost trust in my therapist over such a basic misunderstanding. After 4 months, my therapist said that she wasn't able to get to her other clients in a timely manner (due to me). What happened is I thought therapy sessions were 55 minutes. I had no idea each session I was going over. My prior therapy the year prior had been for 55 min sessions. I had sensed things were off in a couple prior sessions to her coming out with this. I feel she was holding some resentment towards me. I don't know why she waited so many sessions to clear this up. Ultimately, she apologized, but it broke the trust for me. I thought if she couldn't tell me something so simple, then how could she be honest about other more deep things. I felt hurt by the whole situation. When I went back to the paperwork from her supervisor I did see that it said sessions were 45 mins, but there were things I just signed like HIPPA stuff, and I didn't pay attention to it. I will say that was my screw up, but I don't why she let it go on. I look back and tried to see I got a few good things, but I wish I didn't have therapy with her. I disclosed private things I wish I had not.
I personally went and worked as a Behavioral Health Tech at a children's hospital which gave me a lot of experience. It also allowed me time to continue my education. Just an idea. Thanks for sharing! Love your videos 😊
Hi I start next week my career as a therapist and all of my clients will begin as an intake. Feeling excited and nervous! I could definitely benefit from a treatment plan and diagnosis video refresher! I'm wonder if you have a video about that?:) Thank you!! Super helpful
Light and exercise. Two things that i don't get.
I've been practicing as a therapist for 3 years and this was a great refresher
I'm so glad you found it helpful! We all do these things slightly differently - it's always nice to see different ways to do it!
Thanks for summarizing that. I always get the magazine but never have time to read it :)
this video was so good. thank you
Is the process the same for international students?
Can I have the assessment form that you use?
Thank you for this.
