  • Let's talk about how to become a psychologist! There are some people out there who knew from a very young age that they wanted to become a psychologist. I didn't have a plan and took it one step at a time. If this is you, this video might be helpful!
    Of course, everyone will have a different journey but there are key milestones that are simliar across the board, such as practicum and internship experiences. I talk about the GRE, EPPP, internship match day, post-doctoral fellowship, and working at the VA and in private practice.
    This video covers APA-accredited clinical psychology programs* Non-accredited programs may be different, and usually warrant a little more work for licensure.
    This is not a replacement for professional or mental health advice or care. Please consult with your individual provider regarding your healthcare needs.

    I feel so seen by you, I won't lie I don't have the best gpa and I struggled a lot in school, ever since I made the switch to psychology I've gotten significantly better grades, I hope I get lucky in getting into a masters and psyd program in clinical psychology eventually!

      you got this! so glad you feel seen. i talk a lot about not getting the best grades in the past because sometimes we feel stuck with our grades or gpa for a variety of reasons. and, i know plenty of psychologists who got ok grades and they turned out to be incredible practitioners 🥰

    I'm in a PsyD program right now! It took some trial and error but I am happy that I am where I am :) Oddly enough, my program didn't require the GRE. I really appreciated that they took a holistic approach when looking at candidates and didn't focus on the GRE score.

    I wasn’t the best test taker when it comes to taking exams. I learned from failure a lot and it devastated me. But I learned how to keep my head up because I’m a good person and there’s nothing better than afraid of. If you want something go after it even if you have to take the punches. I wanna start my online coaching business and get my masters later on to be a LPC. Any tips or advice

    I was wondering if you could share some knowledge on applying for PsyD programs without obtaining your master's degree first? I recently graduated with my bachelor's and applied for PsyD programs that I have managed to get interviews for, but I am tremendously nervous about how realistic it is that I get accepted.

    • @makeusmileify
      @makeusmileify ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! I'm in a PsyD program right now and was accepted with just my bachelor's. Most programs don't require a master's degree to be admitted into a PsyD program. Although I do have classmates who do have their masters and are returning to get their PsyD, I also have a ton of classmates who came in straight from undergrad. I found that programs look for good matches for their program and not so much if someone has a master's degree. Best of luck with your interviews! You got this!

    Hi Ms. Casey! I will be going into a master's program this coming fall which is a research based psychology program. I was wondering if this route can still lead me to a career path in a sport psychology/clinical psychology as a concentration with a potential psychology based research master's degree?

    • @drkristencasey
      @drkristencasey  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hey andre! i don’t see why not :) i’d think of potential job descriptions you’d see yourself happy with (search for the titles in indeed, careerbuilder, linkedin, etc), and see what the requirements are. if it’s research based, i’m not sure if licensing is a requirement. you can certainly get licensed at the masters level, but it depends on the job and the organization’s requirements. when in doubt, find your dream job and see what the requirements are within the job description ❤️

    • @drkristencasey
      @drkristencasey  ปีที่แล้ว

      hey carissa! it truly depends on a variety of factors. for those who have lower gpa's or have lower gre scores, having a master's shows that you're a good psyd candidate because you've already had grad school experience. i suggest to people to call their prospective schools and inquire about the requirements and ask if a masters would be helpful. i know a ton of people who went straight psyd. i did masters because that's just where life took me at the time. hope this helps!

      hi bernice! so i worked under an lpc for a little bit but i couldn't do it full time with the program that i was enrolled in. it was just too much for me, especially because i attended an accelerated program. with clinicals, exams, and having to be in class (physically attending classes) - i just couldn't swing it. i took out loans to pay my living expenses. probably not the best financial decision ever, but that was one of the only options that worked for me. hope this helps!

      Thank you for the response! It’s very helpful. The reason I asked is because I’m planning to enroll into MA in clinical psychology (LPCC track), get licensed and continue to PsyD program. were you making good money during your lpc days? Was it worth it pursuing your PsyD although u already had LPC at the time?
