I am a European guy and have been heavily addicted to this movie for at least 10 years, still loving it a lot. There is one (strangely underrated) US-romcom which I like very much "Definitely, Maybe" - great cast, one single storyline

I rarely get lucid dreams, but happen a few times. Usually it goes, "wait this can't be real, this must be a dream" ... and I realize it's a dream, and then for some ... inexplicable reason dream includes boobs, and for some reason I lose the lucid part. I am sure it doesn't mean anything at all.

Valentine's Day and New Year's Eve are both taken directly from this movie. It came out before both of them.

Yes, happy endings are a bit too much for many brits. Cultural differences. I'm not a fan of a very predictable story being told over and over and over. bittersweet is more romantic for some of us in Europe. European films...history of bittersweet. Life is not all tidy.

This movie shows many types of love. Father and Son, first love, unrequited love, sisterly love, tempters love, love for the departed, newly weds love, workplace love, love almost lost, impossible/unlikely love, bro love, motherly love - keeping the family together for the sake of the kids, rebuilding love, love that transends language or class status. I understand Rufus's character is an angel. He is slow in wrapping the gift, it is a ploy hoping Harry will change his mind. He steps in to distract to allow the boy to run past security.

Happy Holidays, Nova! I'm not really a fan of romcoms, though, I love romantic dramas like the Before Trilogy (1995, 2004, 2013) and 'Portrait of a Lady on Fire' (2020). The film that's closest to a romcom that I really love would be Midnight in Paris (2011).

Personally Romulus was the probably the worst of the new Alien films that came out and that bar wasn't that high at all, it was generic, the characters were bland and not that likable and it didn't really build suspense so the pay off was always weak.

The different stories was a lot at certain points, but this was a cool watch. My favorite Rom-com is Crazy Stupid Love, with Punch Drunk Love being a close second

if you're into animation movies you should watch paprika it's what this movie has been VERY inspired by without giving credits

Hi Nova, This is a UK film. A happy ending is never guaranteed. We start our children early with films like THE SNOWMAN and WATERSHIP DOWN. Both are animated films for pre-teen children and neither have a happy ending. Just smile at the happy bits while they happen, then laugh at the funny bits, and of course, shed a tear at the sad end.

We know that there is humanoid lifeform out there.

If you haven't seen it already, I recommend Life As We Know It. It's one of my favorite romcoms because of its underlying premise...

To explain the "fat" jokes - the ectress playing Natalie got a lot of grief from the press at the time about gaining weight. The writers decided by bringing it up again and again to show how ridiculously wrong it was and they made her the love interest of both the President and the Prime Minister to make sure everyone would get how beautiful she was.

Not a Rom-com, but you should give "Magnolia" a chance! It's probably my favorite and most well-done example of interlinked stories

Every time I watch this movie the I find the "English obnoxious knobhead guy that can't score goes to the US and finds dozens of hot chicks who just want to bone him" story-line more and more jarring in this otherwise so well written and performed movie. It just feels so ridiculous and out of place. And definitely watch Notting Hill like many others have suggested, it's great.

Oh man, haven’t thought about Mr Woodcock in years. Underrated. You should totally check out his Bad Santa movies.

Ah the British, cheeky little basta***. This was an interesting film, I feel like you have to understand to a degree English humor/idiosyncrasy to better appreciate the film. Analyzing/experiencing the film through that lens makes more sense of the movie. To an extent this was a film satirizing not only how Americans portray love but also American culture in general. In the beginning of the film 9/11 is directly referenced and they subtilty criticized the hate/anger in the aftermath of the attack by showing that love is still present in the very area that was tied to the event. I guess in a way of saying “what happened was tragic but that shouldn’t make us change for the worse”. The USA (and allies) clearly didn’t get the message because it went in a rampage in the middle east killing millions of innocents…but that’s for another talk. They also portray the US President as being a freak, a reference to Bill Clinton I imagine. The British weird guy goes to America and is successful just because of his accent, a way of saying “our freaks that no decent person would date here is a charmer and a prize in the USA”. A lot more to list but that illustrates this point. Strong criticisms but they’re not wrong. As for the love aspect of the film, in the beginning of the film they make it known that this isn’t going to be like other love stories. When the singer keeps repeating the old lyrics and apologies for repeating the lyrics because it’s what he is used to hearing/singing the producer responds by telling him “Well, we all do. That’s why we’re making the new version”. Love is still the focus of the film but it's being showed through a different lens. The yearners in shambles once again. They go on to show the many facets of what love actually is, not in an ideologized way but rather in a more realistic way. It shows that while life is complicated and not perfect - agonizing and painful even - love still exist in the world (tying back to their original message). Rom-coms I like: 13 Going On 30, 50 First Dates, and The Princess Bride. The Princess Bride is my favorite though, I also own the book. It's so good. There is a Red Nose Day short that follows up on this movie, you get to see where a lot of them are 10-15 years later. Some of the writing issues were definitely an of the times situation but some of it is British culture and how British humor works

The Joke with Liam Neeson (the guy from Taken) is that earlier in the movie he tells his son Sam, that if he meets the 80s/90s Supermodel Claudia Schiffer (one of the biggest, highest paid models in the world in the late 80s and 90s, along with Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, & Christy Turlington) thaf he was going to kick him out the house and have sex in every room, including his. The woman he meets as he's walking out of the Christmas performance with Sam, is played by Claudia Schiffer. So thats the joke. Not that he's already 100% over his wife. I love, Love Actually, it is probably my favorite rom com of all time. But I have other favorites such as, A Lot Like Love, with Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet, Sing Street, No Strings Attached with Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman, Friends with Benefits with Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake, Leap Year with Amy Adams, Music and Lyrics with Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore, Love Rosie with Lilly Collins, Crazy Stupid Love with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, Hitch with Will Smith, Starter for 10 with James McEvoy and the 1st, Think Like A Man. If you're looking for straight Romance with a little less comedy, I recommend, A Walk in The Clouds with Keanu Reeves, House of Flying Daggers (which is also an action movie), Wicker Park with Josh Hartnet (which is also a thriller), Once (which is about music), Stardust and the Princess Bride, which are both framed like adult fairytales, and Definitely,Maybe with Ryan Reynolds. As someone who saw Love Actually before Valentines Day and New Years Day, as that was the order that they were released, Love Actually is by far the best of them. As you're right, every story doesn't have a happy ending, but thats the point, life doesn't always have happy endings. But love persists. You feel Emma Thompson's (the woman cheated on) pain in a real way, unlike any story in the other 2 movies. Like you don't even understand why Zac Effron is so into making Michelle Pfeiffer's night in New Years Eve, and is Halle Berry's story crazy romantic? Julia Roberts is just trying to get home to her son, and you find out Bradley Cooper is gay. While Love Actually has these big, grand gestures of love. Like the guy from walking dead making a whole presentation, the prime minister going from door to door, Sam learning to play the drums and run through the airport, and the writer learning Portugese as the maid learned English. Also the guy from Walking Dead and Kierra Knightley did look at each other strange when they saw each other in the airport. Because what happened didn't just go away.
