Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider Omnibus Review
I was playing a game watching some youtuber (heavyspoilers) talk about V for Vendetta. And he kept comparing it to the comics. I've wanted to read an Alan Moore book for ages now. He recently released a book (forgot the name but it's on my TBR) .. and suddenly I had this urge to read V for Vendetta. I haven't really read comics since I was a kid and read Storm (not Marvel, illustrated by Don Lawrence) and the Trigan empire comics. Saw the paper back, but I always get hardcovers, looked for a hardcover and found this on amazon. Ended up ordering it lol. Can't wait till it's here. But writing this comment reminded me of storm and the rise and fallof the trigan empire. Man I would love to have those books. I don't think I've ever seen comics that had cooler illustrations and styles than those comics. I don't remember what they were about. I just remember they were adult comic books, storm about a group of barbarians in some fantasy land and the trigan empire one about a romanesque space empire.
Alan Moore has written a lot of all time great comics, plenty of others to explore if you end up enjoying this
26:15 thank you for daying this, too many pseudo intellectuals say that if a story isn't complex enough then it is not good which isn't the case, i think alot of writers try to write complex stories and it doesn't turn out very good, sometimes simplicity is the best. Just finished reading the loeb and sale omnibus for the first time and absolutely loved it, kind of mad at myself that this is peak batman artwork and storytelling that everything after that is not going to be as good lol
Absolutely, there's nothing wrong with a simple but entertaining story, that's exactly what you need sometimes and I still say this book has some of the best Batman stories out there
Just leaving this comment here for anyone that might stumble upon it. It has been announced that these comics are getting reprinted in the form of “Tomb Raider Colossal Collection Volume 1”. Thankfully you won’t have to pay an arm and a leg for the out-of-print Archive editions anymore as it looks like Dark horse is planning on re-printing these comics.
Great news, I didn't know about that but having looked it up now it looks like there'll probably be two big volumes collecting all of this
They just announced the book for Rebirth and I'm so hyped. Loved the first one so much with all the details and information.
Great news, I'll definitely get the Rebirth one whenever it's out!
I agree with you: very interesting historically, but the stories are for the most part not that engaging.
I'd say the same goes for golden age comics in general
Great review. I agree the 4 issues after Gerber left were different. The 2 final issues like they tried to continue with nothing on hand being 6 years apart. I still read to the end for completion.
Really strange, half hearted ending to the series all in all with the big time gap after Gerber left
Does the series drop in quality at any point?
I don't think so, I really enjoyed it all
I never really understood why people didn’t like seeing Joker’s “origin” in The Killing Joke. Mostly because in the comic, the Joker states that he sometimes remembers his past one way or the other and that if he were to have a past, he’d prefer to be multiple choice.
Yeah I always thought it worked well as it's all kept deliberately ambiguous like that as to how much if any of it is the truth
It is worth to get this collection considering that it's pretty much x2 expensive and you get the illustrations only in the first 2 short-stories books? I'm still deciding which Witcher book set to purchase, this would've been 100% the choice if all books had illustrations.
Pretty much just depends on whether you prefer hardcovers or not - regardless of not all having illustrations, all of these are really nice editions and I'd recommend them
Funny how Tony has to sit around waiting for his battery to charge. Not very efficient. He's like the forerunner to electric vehicles.
Too bad they're literally THOUSANDS of dollars to buy
That's actually insane if they're going for anything like that much
.... why does nobody talk about gwen coming back in the clone saga? Everyone talks about the immonen era as if it's her first reappearance since the actual carnage story... it's bizarre.... as bizarre as that pseudo incestuous relationship with gwen. I'll be honest, the artwork isn't bad, but the story is really bad after ultimatum. Death of Spider-Man is good tho. Really good.
Are there any DC books you're interested in?
Getting this one, with its Spider-Man appearance causes me to long for Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1.
Always good to see a Spider-Man guest appearance! Do you have ASM Vol 1 too?
No, I wanted it last Christmas, but it sold out before my Dad could get it!
Should i collect the Death of Spider-Man Omnibus after this or what? Where does that fit in? After Omnibus 5?
Death of Spider-Man is basically Vol 5, it follows directly on from this
Death of is essentially volume 5. So, it depends on if you want to wait and see if a vol 5 is made and what's different, which won't be much
@@lukewarwick9350 yeahhhhh that's the most confusing part of this comic book stuff. Always something dumb
I LOVE the fact that sue was written the way she was..that the men can be men and take care of her.. love it
And in fairness it makes sense within the story as I'd say her powers are probably the most complex of all of them and it potentially just would take her longer to fully work them all out and master them
I guess vol 3 did not sell a lot because its impossible to find now for under $300
I heard this one was now the hardest to get but wow that price is crazy
My favorite DC Omnibuses are my 3 Batman Knightfall Omnibuses (Vol 1, Vol 2 Knightquest, Vol 3 Knightsend)!
Larsen's Spider-Man started out heavily influenced by McFarlane, but definitely grew into his own. At his peak, his Spider-Man is one of my favorites.
I've come around a bit on Larsen's art since I did this review, it's still not my favourite but I think I was probably a bit too harsh on it from what I remember
Where in volume one does it start to get away from the childish repetitive tone? I se volume two has more consistent stories.
@@sergioacosta9712 towards the end of volume 1 there's an arc by Jim Steranko that was the first point for me when the stories started to really evolve into something more interesting
Just finished reading this story as part of the Colours Omnibus. I’m not the biggest Hulk guy, so I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this!
All of those stories are really well presented and really tug on the heartstrings
Great coverage as always 💪👏 I’m still making my way through the vol 1
Loved this book
Wait a minute! Why does the cover of the book has in Joker's camera his name in Greek?
Danger Girl should crossover with Charlie's Angels & Totally Spies 😊
NIce list, the only thing is missing for me is Venom Omnibus by Cates.
5:12 sounds almost similar to the 70s Hulk show which I found really cool heck it was definitely a nod to that old show that Al Ewing even introduced that character Jackie McGee an obvious nod to that series tht I really loved honestly. But then as the book progresses it goes into the bigger overall story
Thanks again for a very useful review! So far most of my purchases have been done before checking your channel and I never got disapointed! Great channel!
@@Grunzur I'm happy I can help! Thanks for watching!
Waiting for the reprint!
What's the best Batman book?
Another great video 👍 I love Peter David almost everywhere that I read him so i didn't need much convincing. Just bought the last copy that was available for me at a "reasonable" prize (it is really a lot of pages 😂) The concept of another Spiderman on the future intrigues me, think will be fun. As I understand Peter David had another run at Spiderman 2099 yeara later compile in the Omnibus 2, now available? Does this one interest you, any plan of reading it?
At the moment no plans to get the second volume to be honest, I feel like this one is a complete volume with the whole original 90s run collected and I've had my sights set on other books. Nothing against volume 2, but unfortunately I can't get everything!
I have an inquiry please any idea on the cover page Width & High as well the inner page W & H thank you 🙏 In addition to the spine width if it’s possible thank you mate 🙏
Another great review, thanks for that! My copy is on the way, I’ve read very little Hulk, just the Inmortal Hulk (loved that one by the way, great book in my opinion), so I wanted to read some older Hulk greats and this seemed like a good place to start. I think Peter David is a very interesting writer, I enjoyed what he did with Supergirl (though not everybody liked it) so with that and with your review I’m sure I’ll enjoy this one. Pity the Omni vol.1 is out of print. Don’t think it will matter too much starting from here? Hope they reprint it again. Anyway, enjoyed the video! Thank you 😊 PS: 30:11 Ah! Totally agree about the Punisher. That starting premise of the character is something I cannot really agree nor really enjoy 😢
I'm sure volume 1 will be reprinted again at some point and whenever it is I definitely recommend it. As it is you're pretty much fine to skip it and start here for the time being as this volume more or less starts with Peter David shifting the story in a new direction from what was happening in volume 1 pretty quickly
Lovr your content man, God bless u
Started collecting Silver Age Omnibuses. Of the four I have, Dr. Strange, Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America, Cap is my favourite. All out action and plenty of macho jawing, it sure is fun!
18:55 Another great review. I read this a couple of years ago and really loved it. I also enjoyed a lot the even more controversial (I think) Batgirl of Burnside. Totally different vibe and style but I liked it too. I'm wondering if you had a chance to read that one? Could be a good one for another video review?!
I haven't read the Burnside stuff yet, honestly at the time it came out I remember the shift in art style put me off but it wouldn't bother me so much these days I'm sure
@@TheComicBookTrove Yes, get one if you got the chance. By the way, what do you think about Batwoman Omnibus? I enjoyed that one also, personally I like Greg Rucka (his novels too, I’ve read all of them except the Star War ones) and the stories and what he does here with the character.
You're right, I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere so I just discovered this because of your review, and got my hands on a paperback copy. Thanks for covering it. Personally I think 90's comics like Lara Croft, Switchblade... are a fun light read (I don't mind the over the top art also). Please cover some more of these king of 90's comics. The reviews you did on that ones was great!
I know Iron Man vol 1 isn´t that good, but when do you think it picks up?? Vol 2 and 3 are coming up and I might skip them and just keep my Vol 1 if they are more of the same.
I'd say it improves steadily during volume 2 and 3, it's just the earliest stuff that's pretty rough but the same can be said for a lot of characters
Great review, hope they reprint it soon so I can get my hands on it! Not “totally unrelated” any Star Trek comics worth mentioning or maybe reviewing in the channel?
I haven't read many Star Trek comics to be honest but it's something I might turn my attention to at some point
Is the glue binding much of a problem?? so many pages are splash pages, do you have to fight the book in order to see the middle??
No I didn't have any real problem with these, I only really find glued binding to be an issue with bigger books, so pretty much just omnis
Great video
15:19 “You’ll never see me review a Clone Saga omnibus” As somebody who put himself through all 4 of them, I can say you’re probably making the right call there 😄
You're more dedicated than me if you read through all of that 😂
The writer pronounces his name Mik. æ line ee (like rhymes in “I hit my knee)
Good to know, it's a tricky name to be fair, I'm sure plenty of others have mispronounced it 😅
very cool,omnibus perfect.
I was thinking about this when I received my copy and seeing the contents of volume 2 (Including all of max carnage, lethal protector etc). This era is where classic spidey was still consistently great and then once the clone saga hits, I don't think it's ever been the same. I actually enjoy a good portion of the clone saga, but that definitely signalled a point where spidey lost his way. Practically every run since has followed a pattern of a new writer making their mark with some great stories, followed by editoral interfering or ideas going nowhere resulting in it being mixed overall. Having said that, if we get 2-3 omnis to round out the post clone sage/pre JMS I'll be getting them. Likewise with the brand new day era yet to be collected. I'll be very interested to see your thoughts on the J M Dematteis spectacular omni if you get that next year. One of my top 3 spidey runs.
Thats funny. The art is why im trying to track down a copy or figure out the order to buy stuff in.
The art style definitely grew on me over time
Is the spider man by chip good for kids?
One of my favorite sagas for Marvel! I had one point of disbelief in the prequel story. I did not believe Maestro Hulk would lose to Hercules in their one on one fight. I think that since Hulk was at the peak of his power and soaking up all those rads, he should have been able to easily defeat Hercules!
I think it's because this version of Hulk doesn't get stronger as he gets angrier like classic savage Hulk and he hadn't yet been awake and wandering around long enough to absorb enough radiation, or at least that's how I thought of it
I am disappointed. Honestly I wish we got consistent artwork and had multiple editions with each artists vision for all of the books
Great review- question: did this book originally come in factory sealed shrinkwrap? Someone told me it did not.
Thanks! And I'm pretty sure it did but I got this book about eight or nine years ago I think so can't remember for sure
