Taylor 117e Grand Pacific: Just What You Pay For... and LOUD
A very fine mid-range guitar at exactly the price you would expect (Normal Guy Review)
This Taylor 117e Grand Pacific Review is my honest and unplanned reaction to Taylor Guitars 117e model in the Grand Pacific shape, with onboard active preamp, which I did not test.
I was impressed, and I kind of loved it, but I didn't leave with it and honestly I'm not sad that I didn't. This is the closest an off-the-wall Taylor has ever come to capturing my heart, a valiant effort.

This should be pretty obvious for a lot of people on here at this point, but from my personal experience, ANY guitar that has been lingering in a Guitar Center rack for several years is bound to turn you off from it. They do not care for their instruments. They just let the guitars sit there and collect dust. Hell, there was literally a Fender Telecaster with a broken switch. (Which is not uncommon for them) The guitars age while they are sitting on that rack....but not the good kind. Guitar Center does not care for their instruments very well....at least not the location around here. Very rarely have I walked out of a Guitar Center with a smile on my face, and with nice equipment I bought in there.

    • @BillySoundFarm

Same D16 special in both videos, it was marked d16e mistakenly on the Guitar Center label and I didn't realize it in the first video (this one you commented on was the first). If I had actually checked the depth against another Martin D model I would have realized something was up... so technically I haven't played a D16 but I'm sure the shallower body makes a big difference. The D16 special is basically like an HD 28 with a satin finish and no herringbone, and lower grade tonewood.

@@BillySoundFarm my point is, you played a 16 special in both videos, but in the first video, you said it wasn’t as good as a D28. Then you flipped your opinion in the second video a few months later. So which is it? Genuinely curious, no criticism.

I have that guitar. It's made in Nazareth and It's BASICALLY an HD-28 without the Herringbone. But it has FORWARD shifted scalloped bracing like an Authentic '37. All solid wood, the back and sides are satin, the top is gloss. It has a simple dovetail joint rather than the usual standard. Comes with a gig bag (nice one!) Ebony bridge and fretboard. And with new strings rings and rings! I love it! Best deal on a Martin! I changed out the tuners to Grover butter beans, replaced the Tusq saddle with a Martin bone saddle and the pegs with Martin solid standard tortoise pins (like the D-28 comes with). @@BillySoundFarmyeah it’s an interesting thing. Based on your video I would not use Elixirs. When I got this guitar ($3500 koa) I was like ‘no way I’m using coated strings on it.’ I tried a bunch, and when I finally put Elixirs on it I knew from the first strum. I think koa and mahogany tops naturally damps out high frequencies so there’s less of a noticeable difference between coated and un coated, and the elixirs have a nice strong midrange that compliments the wood. A guy I jam with has a nice solid mahogany guitar with Elixirs which is what opened my eyes to them, they work on that guitar too. I don’t use coated on my electrics. Anyway I like your video style. Haha so much of what you said hit home. I also suffer from GAS (guitar acquisition syndrome). Most of which found me, by which I mean they turned up at the right price when I had the cash. I've bought 4 on-line so far and not had any regrets though ideally I'd prefer to play before I buy if it's possible. It's sad that you're so worried about playing them. Personally I think you can do a lot worse than a 70's Japanese copy. You won't care if you ding that, plus as a bonus they're a great platform to mod if that's your thing. They were built really well and they won't mean your kids go hungry. These days I try to stick to one in one out, but it's not easy. The one in part isn't a problem. It's the one out that I struggle with.

@@BillySoundFarm I still don't have nor have tried the Dream 65 and am currently on the fence between it and the Tonex pedal. That is why I was wondering how it takes pedals in front! Your video does make the Dream 65 sound amazing specially when you describe how to just plug in to it, sit on a couch and just be inspired to play! My fear with the Tonex pedal is the amount of presets you can have and I don't want to be buried in menus and presets! But the Tonex pedal seem cool like having several presets of specific amps I like. For example, I can have three drive levels (clean, mid, crunch) for amps like: Supro, Hiwatt, Vox ac30, several Marshalls and several Fenders. But then I would need a midi controller for all these. The advantage here is that I might not need any additional gain pedal in front! With the Dream 65 I liked how you came to the three sounds (presets) that you found as they sounded great! Special the SRV mod. I will start checking your older videos because I haven't seen anyone explain how this pedal works so well as you did. Often people just demo pedals for a day or two and make a video quickly. Yours happened after months of use so you got to really know its intricacies. Thanks again!

@@jonathantarbay1431 I haven't tried a tonex, But I've been using a camper for six or seven months now... I'm planning a batch of videos kind of like what I did for the dream 65 and I'm really taking my time and thinking through all the angles... But I say that just to say that I think capture technology is really good. I haven't compared a deluxe reverb Kemper profile with my dream 65 yet, but the Kemper is indistinguishable from the amp its profiling as far as I can tell so far. The tonex is probably not quite as good as a Kemper, but that guy Sooze on tone junkies says he thinks "capture tech beats modeling every time", And that seemed really arrogant to me until I actually lived with the kemper for a while. The only thing is I have it in my head that it's lame to run other people's capture profiles, so owning the Kemper has made me want to own more amps to profile them because I'm not just going to buy other people's third party profiles. With the tonex You would need more equipment to make your own profiles, it's truly just a player of the capture profiles. ... You can absolutely run the dream65 and have gain staging without a pedal in front. You can use the mobile app to configure it so that the left hand button toggles between a preset and manual mode, And then you can configure the right button to toggle the boost on and off... So that's four tones right there, your preset, your preset with the boost, the manual settings that you have the knobs on, and the manual setting with the boost... For instance, one idea I had for running it would be the left button toggling between a clean scooped preset and clean mids pushed manual settings, And then for each I can use the boost button on the right. ... ... You should just buy both. You deserve it. One of each.

I bought a D-18 without trying it. 0% interest financing I was willing to take the risk.

I'm sad to see Sam Ash go. Even though i was never a huge gc fan, is quite honestly the last decent store, regardless of what people say. In the NJ, Pa area i make a killing off of the great used prices. They were the only ones working to get me a used near mint SG custom for $3000 shipped. The following week i grabbed a like new strat Ultra for $1200. Sold me a stingray bass for $650 NEW!! My Musicians friend advisor, Lizzie, guess and finds them negotiates with the gc rep and bamn! Musicians friend has kinda become like Sweetwater with gc as the store front... Which is what i hear is going to be the business model in the next 2-4 years, fyi. Regardless, all the local shops, even though they are super nice and friendly, can't get the deals i get nor sell my used gear at the prices i can get. Even when i didn't have a musical collections over 50, Mom and pop were scarce on what i needed, never close by, couldn't fix an instrument, etc. 20b years ago i made a side business building and teaching instruments and now deal with sw, gc and mf. Works great. How often will mom and POP and sw say..."hey, i can do at least 15% of on that". Good luck. Chicago Music Exchange does, and i hope they keep growing. I dig them, too
