Dave's Bonsai
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 27 ก.พ. 2018
Hello bonsai enthusiasts! This channel is all bout my bonsai journey in the upper midwest (Minnesota) where it can be tricky to grow bonsai. We have a shorter growing season than most, but so many very impressive bonsai are coming out of MN, so jump on in. I hope to spread the information that I continue to learn day to day with you the viewer and look to learn from all of you. I absolutely love working on my trees and absolutely love sharing that with you. I hope you enjoy it! If you would like to connect with a bunch of people who have a ton of experience growing trees in Minnesota, check out my friends in the Minnesota Bonsai Society (MBS). Hope to see you there as well as being a part of Dave's Bonsai!

Nice euonymus! glad those worked out for you. I just collected a small one from Jim's NE MPLS garden this week. Weeds make such reliable starter bonsais. This fall, I also collected a whole grove of hackberry and an amur maple. That garden is now put to bed for the autumn, so I'll have time to wander around and identify other possible specimens, move boulders, move accents, attend to structure maintenance.
@@bjrockensock thanks! I look forward to what it may look like in a couple more years!
Just bought one of these I’m looking forward to it growing into something like yours, will you be sharing an update on this one soon
@@VictorHHH7 I sure can!!!
@ thanks Dave 👍
I really like the 1st larch...great instruction on pruning..😊👍
Great trees dave. Just a thought larch #1 that first right branch @ 12:05 is shooting up on an angle where the rest of the tree isnt is throwing me off. I think its swelling for inverse taper also. Maybe a hard cutback in spring to the first secondary branch that has movement. What do u think?
@@Chris-oq6kn let me rewatch:
@@Chris-oq6kn yes, that branch is an issue. I’ll have to make some tough choices in the Spring.
@@DavesBonsaiforgot to mention ive been taking alot of pictures of my trees and using the object eraser on my phone to remove branches that im not to sure of and man it really helps before making some big changes. Fun to play around with and sometimes gives me some new ideas.
@ I need to do that.
Well...How could you not plan a road trip out west? 🙈
That $25 tree is a beautiful looking specimen. Just wondering did you visit such discount store the week before if you know what I mean. 😄😄👍🦘🇦🇺

Super cool, Dave. Snow coming your way. 36F/2C here. Always a great video the way you can do a great teaching video. Get some tea after the video.
Hi Dave! Love your videos. I know you're in Minnesota, but what "actual" growing zone are you in? Asking because I'm in zone 3 (Winnipeg, MB) and I'm seeing lot's of similar trees in our hobby.

Great Bonsai work put in, good sir. Bare Naked Larches look really cool (could be a band name 🤔). I was diggin the top down view you were able to get in the PSGF! I’m curious about the pine in the cone. What project are you up your with that one?

Nigel is such a great guy, love his videos. I'm stationed in Utah, our winters is mild compared to rest of the united states so I make by with cheap plastic greenhouse. I would have Chrysanthemums in bloom nearly all winter long. So I leave mine open during the day closed during nights, overcast, and bad weather. For my greenhouse, mainly it's for plants enduring their first few years outdoors. The roots will freeze but the trunk and thin branches won't have ice winds that kill them off.
Great video. It got a little dark there but we likely kept you too long chatting with the KW Bonsai Society. It was a blast to see you that day! Come back soon!!!
@@stevetippin thanks Steve! I thoroughly enjoyed hanging with you all.
@@stevetippin oh, and the syrup is great!!!!!
@@DavesBonsai Glad you like it. Try it on Vanilla ice cream!
I've focused on tropicals and succulents because I don't have a good cold frame for storing trees...my glassed in sunroom gets much too warm and the garden shed seems to attract mice in the winter....
Don sure has some amazing trees. Great interview with him as well. Your road trip is an amazing gift to the TH-cam bonsai community. Such a great spotlight of amazing artists and venues at this moment in time. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.
@@dreamingofbonsai I’m so glad people are enjoying it.
So happy to see you guys meet again! I watch both of your shows and have for several years. I’m not a bonsai guy but do the “shuffle” with cactus in a cold climate so it’s been very inspiring as I grow my hobby. Cheers!
All that was needed for this round table bonsai discussion was a nice fireplace, 2 rocking chairs and 2 cups of tea for bonsai masters. Great info!!!
Amazing! I’ve been patiently waiting for you to get to this video. So great seeing you guys together!

If you plan on taking the insulation off in the spring, maybe a paint marker to mark all the panels for next winter install. Just a thought.
Winter prep for heat loss. At least you put in great thought on how to prevent heat loss in PSGF. This should keep the trees and nice and cozy.
Got it
I cannot believe it is that time already! We hit freezing this week so I am suddenly rushing about finding winter places for my trees :)
When you cover the big windows, do you open them back up on sunny days? Or just keep it dark in there untill spring? You’re the hardest working man in bonsai, brother.
@@baldyeti they stay covered all winter . December 15th or so until about February 15th or March 1st.
I know I said this before but I'd say it again, your P.S.G.F. looks amazing.
Nice friends...
That's an amazing workspace Dave...Nice to see it is working out for you...I've created an indoor area in my garage that wouldn't get much below 60 deg F...We'll see how is works for my first over-winter of my tropicals...You are a true inspiration and I enjoy your videos very much...Thanks for sharing your experience...Sequim, WA...
If you are fond of BRTs, try tamarinds. Similar trees with thorns and hardy as hell. Do not have the zigzag branching of BRTs. Grows well in Florida but you will not have any problems with your greenhouse. Walk into any Indian/Asian store and buy raw tamarind fruit - either loose or packaged. The seeds need to be soaked in water for a day or two and if you sow them in late Spring, you should have 6 inch saplings by mid Summer. Good luck, Deep
Nice job David keep up the good work my friend
My Thanksgiving cactus is blooming now. Every September, I put it outside and leave it until the blooms start to set. I water it as usual. This never fails. I tried the 12 hours of darkness years ago but I got very little flowers.
also curious about your method of growing from cuttings.
@@airford13 just took a cutting from my wife’s plant and stuck it into recycled bonsai soil. That was 6 or 7 years ago.
