Just love my Port's and Jades as they give me a bit to do during those longer Winter days...This is such a nice tree...I agree with you and Tom about washing my bare-rooted trees/plants...You can really 'bare-root' the with a lot less picking at the roots. Always enjoy the content...Thanks Dave...Sequim, Wa...
Dave, I like the bonsai swap challenge. The issues I have is most of my stuff is very young, but depending on when it occurs I'm sure I could pick a tree or two. One idea is that there could be a swapping of plants at the National Bonsai Conference in September.
I'd love to do the bonsai swap! I have trees that could be developed in several different styles and I just can't decide! It would be fun to see if we would make the same decisions
Thanks for the shoutout! I really like how you took everyones comments into consideration. It makes it feel like the community had a small part of the process in this prune. I'm digging the chops you made on that PA. It will flourish this coming spring for sure. I LOVE your bonsai swap challenge idea ... that could be a really fun project. Any PA, NJ, or NY folks wanna swap trees with me lol?
Your cuttings are nicer than my port's!!!😳 B-O-N-S-A-I spells patience...Wow...a tree swap, not sure anyone would want my sticks in a pot...But I like the concept of watching the pro's swap their babies...
Loved where you took this tree. Looking forward to forward to spring when you show the response! Alright, who wants a tree from Alaska? Who trusts the mail?
@ yes and no. I so appreciate the friendships bonsai has brought me. What a cool way to stay in touch. I’ve already connected with the guy I’ll swap with and he’s all for it and knows the tree. I’ll find mine soon and we’ll swap this late winter. I’m guessing it won’t be my top 10 trees…😜
I have a Ficus Microcarpa that I would be willing to trade with someone. What we need is a website that rather than buying and selling trees it works on the barter / trade system. Instead of give a penny, take a penny its give a tree, take a tree.
Maybe you should rename the channel, 'Carnage Maximux'🤣🥴 Stay well and stay warm...I spent a Winter in Mound, MN and it was definitely the coldest I've ever experienced...🥶
I also like your challenge. I have a couple trees that I just don’t have a good vision for them, and perhaps someone else could bring a different eye and enthusiasm to the trees.
Chopping off all the roots and branches at the same time really makes the PA struggle to grow. Lack of roots and leaves stops the absorption of nutrients through the soil or sunlight.
@DavesBonsai H Dave, I love your channel and everything you do. My humble thought is that when you have a significant number of Bonsai tree's like you do. You can do these drastic measures & if it doesn't work out , you still have tons left. But if it's a hobbyist with just a few tree's, doing drastic measures like this, it can easily result in the loss of a treasured tree. If it does survive, it can take a year or more for the tree to fully recover.
You gave them the old Butcher Zone treatment!
You are not afraid to tackle the big chops. Super cool Dave!
I love PA as well, great video Dave... cheers

You did everything right imo. After growing them in nursery pots to thicken them up they need big chops to turn them to bonsai trees.
Your new tree from what I can see, Stubby, has a nice root flare. This will give you a nice looking tree come spring.

@@n.scottbuchanan6363 excellent idea!!!!!
OMG. So daring. You give me confidence to try the same larger chops on my PA. It’s my PA from a class I took from you a couple years ago.

Stumps on a trunk. Cool. You can name this tree: Stubby. I seen that nice little cutting. A mini bean planting Dave. Mrs. Ohno style? Just a thought.

By doing that first cut, you are allowing that one brain to send out a lower branch for you. Plus. You have an excellent cutting from it.

another good vid, but this challenge thing makes me nervous.
@@airford13 I can certainly appreciate that. 😁

Helloooooooo, Dave!!! Has to be cold out your way. It was a -4F windchill this morning and about 4F. 17F now.

I wonder. From some of those big cuts, can you make a raft from one? Would it root flat and grow you a mini forest? Just wondering.
@@growclipbonsaiforseniors1951 not sure. Possibly.
