Atlona S-Video To HDMI Upscaler Vs OSSC For PS2 Games - Affro's Curiosities EX
Today, it's time to see how a cheap upscaler fares against the OSSC!
The Atlona S-Video To HDMI Upscaler was first shown on my main channel some years ago where I put it up against the Portta!
Now, the OSSC is the challenger & while it is up to four times the price, the device is well known for its great picture quality for retro games!
Can the Atlona hold up well enough for the £30 I payed for it all those years ago?
Hope you enjoy the results!

I don't like how the Dolphin ones look stretched.
This can be fixed/changed as there's many aspect ratio options to suit your display or the game in Dolphin if you don't like the generic 16:9/4:3 options :)
After the PS1 emulation on PSP was unlocked, I played so many great Playstation games on it and had a blast. I also used it to listen to music and watched videos during train rides. That was long before all Smartphones could do that. Way ahead of it´s time.
Absolutely, even today I still love the PSP for all those features that we now take for granted :) The system is still a little beast!
Just figured out ps2 emulator. The games look so much better on the emulator at 1440p . Just testing out the games . I rather play the emulator rom version.
PCSX2 emulation is a great way to play PS2 games & if you love the results, keep using it :)
Hi Affro, after your extensive testing what is the best budget "plug and play" HDMI solution for the PS2 in your opinion?
The Retrotink 2x line, the Retroscaler 2x or ODV :) The RAD2X line is very plug & play also :)
How bad is the bob deinterlacing irl when in motion?
It looks decent with 60hz games but a bit worse with 50hz :) I do have videos using this method if you want to see it for yourself :)
@@AffrosCuriositiesOfficial I noticed 1.8 revision has slot mask crt filters now & 1440p 6x output and its only $150 in my currency so im heavily debating grabbing one LMAO but i havent found any footage of ps2 stuff beyond your channel so i appreciate it. might just jump the gun on it.
Oooo that's a lot better than my 1.6 version that I've been using for four years now :) Definitely worth the purchase!
@@AffrosCuriositiesOfficial can it do widescreen by chance?
They both support widescreen but it is game dependent as not all PS2 games support 16:9 natively :)
I personally use Retrotink 5X Pro but Retrotink 2X will do on pretty much any gaming console from the 90s and 2000s such as PS1 and PS2. Although the downsides is that one has to tweak the settings and save it to a preset profile for each gaming console respectively to make it worth while. I tried cheap Ebay and Amazon upscalers and they do work but the visual fidelity is often very bad, but there is definitely cheap good ones too, it just takes a while to find them. I however spent over 600$ buying mine from Mike Chi the owner of Retrotink products to get my best experience and I highly recommend it. It's just gives back those oldschool vibes, in the settings menu much options can be tweaked to get just the right look for each game, that is the best part about it all. That is what is missing from all other scalers out there from what I know so far at least, I have never tried anything else than a Retrotink 5X Pro, so I can only share the limited experience I have had with it. I played all types of PS1 and PS2 games and it runs all of the games perfectly and just the way I want it to be run. When it comes to OSSC I probably won't spend more to buy that when I got my own solution which costed me alot, but hey, there is more options out there, the more the merrier, so yeah. Everyone will find their favorite upscaler and that is cool. There is so much fun to test each upscaler though, so hopefully someone can do a all in one test to see which upscaler is the best. But until then, I guess we will have to still speculate on what's the best one. I really enjoyed the video, you put alot of effort into them and it is really nice. I wish I could do the same, but yeah, this is great.
For me personally I would love a Retrotink 5x for myself & from the footage I've seen online, along with other features packed into it, I know it'll be my next upscaler :) Because it's not available in the UK, I'd have to import it so I'd be spending £400 or more for it so, unless my channel really takes off, I'm not getting it anytime soon 😆 It is a good thing quality upscalers can be found for around £50 - £60 making it viable for more people to play real consoles on newer HDMI TV's :) I love my OSSC still & while I'm ready for an upgrade, I can still recommend it for many, many people even now!
@@AffrosCuriositiesOfficial Yea, it costed me ~600$ USD to import it from USA to Europe. But I still think it was worth the investment long term, I wanted a quality product so I had to spend alot to get that quality and from what I know it's been my only goto scaler ever since I got it. All the other scalers are just backups if my Retrotink somehow breaks in the future. Yea the OSSC is a amazing scaler and a great contender for the title of best upscalers for sure. It's a bit like the Retrotink 2X in a way I feel. I wish there were more brands out there for upscalers but I think these ones that do exist do a really good job at it so far. There's not much to say than perfection from the manufacturers of these amiable products. We all love them in our own ways, whether it's the OSSC, the Mister (I think that's what it's called), the Retrotink and many more that I cannot think of right now, but there's plenty of products in the range of upscalers that will be contending for the number one spot of best upscalers for sure. Some people just want to upscale the games without any extra settings. I personally am part of that crowd, but if the image is not outputted properly on a TV then it's sort of necessary to do some tweaking, but it would be cool if future upscalers had auto tweaking settings for different TVs. That would be so much better for the market.
I have come to the conclusion that at sometime, the Portta internals were changed. I purchased two of them in 2020 and have been really pleased with them. Apart from making the image a little darker there are no other issues at all. This was a problem as turning up the brightness made no difference. Beatdown on the Xbox being the worst example.
There's been serval versions of the device over the years with different image quality results but, none of them get close to the quality of the OSSC :) However, as a starter upscaler, it gets the job done :)
(Please watch in the highest quality possible & on the biggest display you own to truly see the differences!) Finally, here is a new video! I first looked at the Atlona upscaler many years ago & now it is time to put up against the OSSC! Hope you enjoy the results & feel free to ask me any questions!
30 games is far more than I play in an entire year😮 This was indeed thorough. Yeah, for the most part the PPSSPP 8x thing made the PSP experience so much better. You're definitely the biggest advocate of the PSP I know. It seems like a good little system.
I like to try out various games so people can see a wide variety of software :) It does & the biggest difference is the controller on emulation since it makes playing PSP games easier & more comfortable 😊
Just been having a go on Ridge Racer High Spec Version with Duckstation. The game runs at 60fps on OG hardware, but now we can also have HD gfx - it’s really close to arcade quality!
It's certainly an interesting way to experience the game & you also take advantage of the Hi-Res mode the game provided :)
3:21 That is because the PS2 has to convert digital into analogue signal, some pixel sharpness is lost in the conversion. PCSX2 does not have to convert digital to analogue.
This is true & a lot of HDMI conversation kits for some retro consoles sidestep the process :) Still, it is nothing major in my opinion if the console is in good condition :)
OSSC is clearly the winner, however, I have a medium sized console collection but the family Wii lives inside the TV stand where sticky little fingers can’t reach… I’m thinking a retroscaler 2x would be cheap enough to leave connected to the Wii.. then an OSSC for the other consoles as I only set them up one at a time.. hmmmmmm 😅 thanks for the video
Ah it would be a good idea & the Retroscaler 2x is still a good upscaler for the right price 😊 Glad you found the comparison useful :)
@@AffrosCuriositiesOfficial they’re very cheap on ali express right now too… 30 quid!
Oooo if so, definitely snatch it up for that price! :)
I love downsampling personally. Downsampling fixes two issues for me personally , 1) Get's rid of the really distracting aliasing that software mode gives on modern displays e.g. LCD/OLED, 2) Fixes the 4k upscale, which I personally find super distracting when the character models look like they're completely disconnected from the background/scene, not to mention exposing all the ultra low resolution textures, prevents my brain from filling the in the gaps that come from the more authentically blurred version. Also I wish PCSX2 got this feature, I'm trying to figure out how to enjoy PCSX2 because the software mode is excellent but the aliasing is so distracting all the flickering and shimmering, tempted to pickup a CRT monitor so it naturally smooths out the image.
Ah this is the beauty of emulation as I always say, you make the image look exactly how you want to your own personal taste 😊 Ah you could always try Bilinear filters both on PS2 textures & when using linear upscaling or Bilinear upscaling, which I tend to use to help smoothen PS2 graphics on emulation :)
@@AffrosCuriositiesOfficial Will give that a go, normally always use nearest neighbour or integer, but maybe a bit of blur to smooth out the aliasing will work.
Ah I never use nearest neighbour on the emulator unless I'm playing 2D sprite fighting games such as Street Fighter Alpha Anthology as the nearest neighbour gets rid of the blur the game has natively :) I would also turn off integer since the Bilinear filtering will help smooth out the image and reduce any shimming issues :) It usually works best with 2D games anyway :) Defiantly try Bilinear filtering and use either the smooth or normal option for upscaling :) Keep ps2 textures set to Bilinear (PS2) :) Hope this helps!
There is a game I played on ps2 about little boy waking up from his bed in little house in china or maybe Japan i don't know but i wonder if anyone can tell me its name i remember there is alot of kissing stuff even the enemy can be kissed but you will lose hp if don't gave em what he wants or you have to be higher level than the enemy
I've definitely never played a game like that before :o I hope someone will see this comment & will know the game in question :)
Man, I've been using PCSX2, since around 2006. The improvements in only the last 4/5 years are insane and much better than anything done post 2011 or so. It has finally become the Dolphin of PS2 emulation.
I've dabbled with PCSX2 since 2016 & the improvements have definitely accelerated since 2021 😊 It is easy to recommend although still not perfect :) It's actually worth trying out now for a lot of people :)
@AffrosCuriositiesOfficial I've been using it as a PS2 replacement now since around 2010 when I sold my last PS2, kept the games and backed them up back when I still had a dvd drive on my PC. Was able to finish all the games I had, though I had some of the most popular games so most of them were fully playable with minimal errors.
I use it mostly on Steam Deck now & most games work with little issue although some games do not or need a bit more work to run properly :) Still, PCSX2 is good enough to be a PS2 replacement 😊
The answer to which one is better depends on what game the player is going to play. First, PCSX2 has made significant progress, but there are still unresolved issues, one of which is that the input timing is more than one frame slower than the actual PS2. This issue makes PCSX2 a better choice than the actual PS2 for RPG (games that do not require fast input speed), but for shooting games, fighting games, and rhythm games, it falls outside the acceptable range for input frames. This is why many gamers still prefer to play on the actual PS2.
It's very interesting because I do indeed play Racing games, fighting games & I find both to be largely the same, I've never had a worse experience on PCSX2 so, I feel the setup or displays used makes a huge difference :) Always check the settings for frame pacing & the like, if they are set correctly, the lag issues can be improved significantly :) Not saying this will be the case for everyone but it has helped me for the last few years :)
@@AffrosCuriositiesOfficial Yes, that's right. Each player has different standards for satisfaction, so if they determine that there is no problem, then that is their answer. However, what is concerning is when even developers consider this aspect to be without issues. In reality, the complaints regarding the input response speed of PCSX2 are much more prevalent among those who experience issues than among those who do not.
I hope for those who experience issues, a simple fix in the menu should do the trick but, I do agree the developers should look into the software & improve it on their end too to help reduce potential issues with lag :)
I don't think scaling that much is the way to go with PSX. I feel like it is better to render at 4K but to donwscale it to 2x-3x the original resolution.
I do have a video showing off the downscaling of Duckstation if you are interested in the results 😊😊
Perfect i was looking for it, thank you 😍
Glad I could help you out :)
As much as I like the major enhancements the original graphics really added to the atmosphere. Especially Silent Hill.
It's going to be personal preference & yes some games won't have their intended feel due to the enhancements :) You can always turn the enhancements off or use software rendering mode if you want the PS1 look proper, albeit if it used RGB SCART :)
@@AffrosCuriositiesOfficial 100% agree with you :) I just think there are specific are specific games that stands out or made some sort of impact and after experiencing this, everything else will look off.
This is the beauty of emulation, you can choose how you want the games to look to your liking :) I always show off the enhancements as I feel most will use it to experience games in a different way! Still, at least for those wanting a vanilla experience, software rendering modes are available :)
I’m glad the PS2 library is being preserved like this. I just don’t like when people turn the conversation into how the PS2 version is unplayable
I love PS2 games and it really isn't unplayable at all, at least not in my eyes :) But everyone is different and you cannot please everyone :)
What’s the input delay like on the emulator?
I get this question a lot & sadly it seems to depend on your setup :) For me personally I've had little to no issues & I've happily played on the emulator for years :) Some do for some reason, could be settings, the equipment who knows but for me, it has been very good :)
S video is the best
I like S-Video but RGB is my favourite :) All personal preference :)
Hey, I only have access to a hdtv at the moment (trying to find a CRT nearby but I live in a fairly rural area so it’s proving quite difficult) the tv I have has both component and a scart RGB input. I’m currently using component cables to play ps2/ps1 games on it, do you think Scart RGB looks noticeably better than component for ps2/ps1 games? Is it worth getting a scart cable? Thanks
RBG SCART & Component will look virtually identical as long as the cables are high quality :) You don't need to use SCART in this case :)
@ I thought that may be the case but thought it would be worth asking anyway. Thanks for the reply mate :)
Anytime & anything to help :)
Valkyrie and nfsmw had the biggest glowup on emu.
They definitely had a big change with the 4K upscaling :)
Thank you for this video! Both interfaces are good. Choice depends on your display: Classic CRT TV - SCART 480i PC Monitor - VGA 480p
I feel this is probably the right recommendations for the two cables :)
i just bought the restroscaler 2x and the bitfunx ossc ver 1.7 still waiting for it to arrive.
I hope you enjoy them, I still love my OSSC 4 years on :)
Honestly I hate how downsampling looks, it gives vibes of blurry N64 game in full 3D games. Either give me original look, or sharp 4k graphics. Downscaling is worst of both worlds IMO
It is not for everyone & maybe shaders could help make the effect more pleasing but, for me I'd take original or 4K vs downsampling :)
duckstation is awesome
It absolutely is :)
No fps for the duckstation?
I'm a bit confused by your question, can you elaborate? :)
In duckstation the psx becomes a psp 😅
People have also mentioned Dreamcast, which I feel is also accurate :)
Not knocking original hardware but emulation is the only way to long term preserving the games. Old hardware will eventually fail and the media is not repairable once gone bad so it has to be copied before that.
No one can deny that, although it is still good to have options to suit everyone :) After all, emulation sticking around is not guaranteed! I hope it will be as I do love it & as a tool for preservation, its vital!
You can map the 2nd analog stick to the face buttons and that works very well tbh.
If this is true, most of the FPS games would be very playable 😊
@@AffrosCuriositiesOfficial yeah, actually, you can map it to the face buttons, and select the option to emulate analogue controls on the right stick! I've used this for me and my katamari to get the exact same controls as the PS2 version! 😁 Great video though, it's what prompted me to start emulating psp games on my tablet haha! Perfect for an upcoming 23 hour flight haha!
This is great news & I know once I return to PPSSPP emulation again, I will be using the second analog stick fully! :) I appreciate you telling me about this :) Oh definitely, my Steam Deck has 60 PSP games on it, love playing them there :)
Can you do the N64?
I sadly don't own an N64 at the moment so it would have to be something for the future :)
Grand Turismo 4 aged like a fine wine 🙏💯
It looks even better if you mod it with the HD texture pack 😊
@@AffrosCuriositiesOfficial Agreed on that one, we do appreciate your vids Sir 💯
I really appreciate the comments & I do my best on each video 😊
Complete victory for emulation, this really breaths new life to these old games.
It truly does & the new features fix the original problems with upscaled textures, making the games look fantastic now :)
60fps cheats in PPSSPP are a must for me.
Most games will run at 60fps without cheats but, the ones that don't I'm sure can be easily patched to do so :)
Beaucoup de talent et le temps l'effort tout ça c'est à saluer j'espère que la vidéo fera 1M un jour. Next
Appreciate the comment & who knows :) I don't think this will hit 1m but, I certainly won't stop trying :)
@@AffrosCuriositiesOfficial ça viendra. Cependant j'aimerais bien une vidéo comparative entre la Dreamcast vs demul /redream /flycast à 480p équitable si possible.
I've actually been thinking about doing a comparison like this in the future :) Not sure when I'll get around to it though :)
Finally I'm back with a new video! Here's a big, big video on how the PPSSPP emulator gets on when facing real PSP Hardware in 2024! I tried to use the best settings/video output settings possible for both platforms with the hardware I currently own! Of course I tried a wide variety of games too, up to 30 in total! The version of the emulator used incase you missed it is V1.17.1! Hope you enjoy this episode, it was very enjoyable & surprising to make! Affro
Enhancements should be compared with decent CRT filters, not HD displays, since those graphics were made for that technology. I.e. dithering is an effect that takes advantage of CRT tech which does not translate at all to modern displays, at least not without using a good CRT filter.
I disagree :) I do understand what you are saying, but the reality is more & more people will play retro games like this on newer displays & for me, this makes the most sense since I'm in that category :) Because I don't own or plan to own a CRT again (I'd simply never use it) this way of testing is a must :) However, that doesn't mean I can't test out CRT filters if audiences are willing to help me with which ones are the best to use for the emulator :)
I FUCKING LOVE DITHERING
I love it too :) It is all preference though, some don't like it & I understand why :)
To be fair, some of the PS1 shortcomings (like excessively dithered output, chunky pixels and low resolution), wasn't actually much of an issue when displayed on a CRT... People who want to know what a somewhat authentic output of the PS1 looked like back in the days (and can't get hold of 90's hardware). Run a high quality CRT with composite color blending (like "crt-hyllian-ntsc"). dithering is gone, pixels are rounder, smoother and more blended together. It doesn't look nearly as unattractive when using a quality scaler with clean RGB output on modern displays. Personally I prefer to play many of the PS1 games like this instead of using DuckStations upscaling.
It is very interesting because CRT's or at least higher end ones could support RGB, S-Video or even Component in later years & no one seems to realise or have an idea of how this would look on a CRT display, especially with how sharp the picture would look :) I always say I find it fantastic how we can customise & make the games look almost exactly as we please thanks to shaders & filters :) Me, I'll stick with real hardware using RGB SCART & my OSSC combination but, all the same, any way is the best way to play :)
just proves the point: no ditherning = pc port. i'd stick with ugly dithernnig.
It is preference & if you like dithering, you can enable it or just use software rendering to make Duckstation look like a real PS1 via RGB SCART :)
I like content exactly like this. I hope I will see other platforms as well!
The PSP is next & I've already done Duckstation against PS1 😊 There's plenty more on the channel to see :) Appreciate the support 😊
So no need to VGA cables any more to dreamcast because of this RGB Cable?
That's right & you can switch between 480p or interlaced output using the inbuilt switch 😊
